Anyone have any feedback (good or bad)? My daughter got assigned there and they were built after I graduated (84) so I obviously can't comment. Personally I would take living across Sheridan from lake/beach as major plus. Seems odd she got assigned there as both she and her roommate are math majors.

I just know it's the dorm with the best drugs and weekly orgies.

I think your daughter will enjoy her stay there, if she likes the arts/artsy kids/creativity, etc. A good swath of the residents will be in that super artsy mode so she she get prepared for that. But if she's okay for navigating that sea, she'll do fine.

While I didn't live in Jones, I had plenty of friends who did, and I visited often. Here is what I know/remember:

Jones has a different feel to it, to be sure. There are lots of music majors, theatre majors there--as their majors' buildings are on south campus. Aside from a different artsy vibe, Jones does have art studios, practice rooms, and the Great Room (a flexible performance space) that make it very different. They used to regularly have theatre performances in the Great Room (Wave Productions had their entire seasons there, back in the day).

Of course, Jones sits at the southern end of campus. It is closest to all the arts buildings and journalism. If you have to make the trek to Tech--good luck, it will be a loooong walk.

My neighbors at Jones built a lovely, ~5-foot tall snow penis circa February 1999. I approve of your daughter’s assignment.

I lived in CRC (Communications Residential College) in 95 and 96. Jones back then seemed to comprise a similar level of (awesome) weirdness, creativity and individuality. I’d encourage my kid to take the offer for either.

I lived in 1835 Hinman my first two years, and spent two summers in Jones while teaching Cherubs. For a long time, they were among the best dorms on campus, if for no other reason than they had AC. As long as she's not a Math or Tech major, she should appreciate the proximity to South Campus/downtown Evanston. And yeah, it's a lot of theater majors, which can be fun if that's your thing.

My two sons who attended NU spent their freshman years in Residential Dorms (one Communication and the other International.)
It was a great experience for both and I think your daughter will welcome the opportunity regardless of which one she is assigned. Special programs are put on from time to time and professors come visit and have personal contact with the residents.

It’s a very alternative lifestyle dorm. If you’re daughter isn’t going to be comfortable with neutral genders walking around with their various parts hanging out for all to see, then I really wouldn’t recommend it. Anyone wearing a MAGA hat would be ripped to shreds.

It was fun and then you had to go and ruin it.

You really would fit in better with Ohio State fans. Think of switching teams. Or is that too loaded of an "alternative lifestyle" phrase for you?

Please. Is there anything I said that isn't true? Wasn't saying there was anything wrong with Jones. Just telling it the way it is. There are places like say Bobb Hall and then places like Shepard or Jones that proudly build 5' snow penises, and other places in between. Doesn't mean one place is better than the other. The OP asked a question, and I tried to answer it as certain people are going to be more comfortable in one environment vs. another.

BTW, I deplore MAGA hats too.

Just as follow up today we received communication that beginning this year it's no longer an arts residential college. Now just a plain old residential hall for freshman only.

Just how many "Gender Neutral" students live there? Do you have first-hand experience or are you letting assumptions speak? Give it a break, ECat.

This reads like someone who has never set foot in Jones Hall but heard about it on Fox and Friends.

Bummer. I wish I had a snow penis pic. Maybe you should tell her it’s tradition.

You're probably ok then. Except it's really far from Tech and the Math classes. Otherwise, you're closer to South Beach and to town. I was a Tech major and lived on South Campus for two years and survived, though freshman year was probably the year I spent the least amount of time in class, and weather/distance may have been a factor (but probably more of an excuse since Sophomore year when I was North, I didn't go much more).

Apologies to all who were offended by my comments on Jones. The truth is that I have never lived there and was indeed speaking on what I heard about the dorm or people that I knew that lived there (and what they said) and one party that I went to there, where I did feel a bit uncomfortable based on what I saw. I do not watch FoxNews, so I assure you that was not the source.

Actually, aren't math classes still held close to South Campus? I still have vivid recollections of a Calculus class that was held in Lunt Hall, one of the mid campus haunted halls built over a century ago, circa 1894.

Hmm... you're kind of right. I remember something in Lunt. OTOH I believe my DiffEq and Linear Algebra classes were up in Tech.

Arts at Northwestern, when did that happen? Other than performing arts. Northwestern is still in Evanston, although after all, kind of a movie set city.

When I was at NU, all speech students were gay. That was the truth, except it wasn't.

Um, Jones was always about performing arts. Mostly theater. But also the other disciplines behind theater, like set building, lighting, etc. (Except I gotta dunk on Jones and note CRC owned dramatic lighting for stage, studio and film. Also sound design.)

Lunt was the home of math classrooms and Naval ROTC. While taking a calculus midterm there my freshman year, we all noticed the smell of smoke in the air. And assumed it was probably just the ROTC munitions dump about to blow.

I don’t want to break internet anonymity for others, but I get such a kick out of “I lived in CRC” (where Mrs. Dugan lived long before she was Mrs. Dugan) or “I lived in 1838 Chicago” (where I lived from ‘88-‘91) or “I lived at 1835 Hinman” (where I was an RA ‘91-‘92). So much fun!

In these times that are difficult, if one follows the news, peace to all. Be charitable to all.

That was kind of my point. I didn't think other arts exist to any great extent at NU.
