For some reason people believed he knew a lot about which crypto coins were going to go up in value so opinions he expressed publicly affected the price. So he'd say "Crypto Coin X is a great coin, it's going to go up" and unbeknownst to his audience he was getting paid to say it rather than just giving his honest opinion.
So a lot of people would buy based on what he said, which boosted the price, and then people bought at that higher price and then when the luster wore off the price would drop and the people that bought at that higher price would be out of luck. Unlike someone like Jeffrey Epstein, those in power had no reason to fear what secrets McAfee would reveal. McAfee wasn't important to powerful people. He was a guy that got rich from making virus software, sold the company and got rich, pissed it away and then spent his later years hyping his image as a crypto expert and ripping off non-powerful crypto investors in the process.
