My maternal grandmother (who also happened to be the greatest cook ever) was born a Cline in Mohawk in McDowell county WV. Her mother was known as “Indy” because she was an American Indian. My mother and grandmother both had back hair and high cheekbones. While neither I, mom, or grandma would have been mistaken for a Southern European, we all definitely browned-up in the summer.

Out of curiosity, I did “23 and Me” to see if I had any Native American genes in my heritage. 99.9% European, mostly northern and northwestern (Great Britain and Ireland). Not a hint of American Indian. So goes the family legend.

Sorry to hear about your loss, just pay reparations and welcome to the racist side of the ledger. Country will get you up to speed.

What if 23 And Me is not accurate?

I was curious about my heritage, not obsessive. If it’s not accurate, I’ll just let it go. Not worth it to me to take another test.

Well OK, Two Dogs!

True story, my nephew got a DNA test kit for Christmas. He was shocked to find out that his Grandfather was someone else. His Grandmother had a one night stand with an engineer traveling through WV and had his baby. His mother had to approach her and she admitted to it. Both grandfathers passed away 5 years earlier so it did not get real uncomfortable, but it was a shocker. Both families are now meeting and getting along great.
