My maternal grandmother (who also happened to be the greatest cook ever) was born a Cline in Mohawk in McDowell county WV. Her mother was known as “Indy” because she was an American Indian. My mother and grandmother both had back hair and high cheekbones. While neither I, mom, or grandma would have been mistaken for a Southern European, we all definitely browned-up in the summer.
Out of curiosity, I did “23 and Me” to see if I had any Native American genes in my heritage. 99.9% European, mostly northern and northwestern (Great Britain and Ireland). Not a hint of American Indian. So goes the family legend.
