These days it's not clear who will accept the invitation.
1. Too many of the baseball players are here illegally
2. Too many of the basketball players couldn't pass criminal background checks.
3.professional football, see #2.

Megan Rapinoa was clearly the best player on the pitch today........and not solely because of the two PK's she nailed.

How many teams you played on?
In my life? More than I can remember between football, baseball, basketball and several race teams. If you count intramurals probably double that. I wouldnt even count softball teams because it wasnt seriously competitive.

"Race" teams? Pie eating or hot dog eating?

I meant soccer. The captain in soccer is supposed to be the only player that can challenge a ref. Teammates choose a player they know will handle themselves accordingly. They are also the only on-field voice of strategy changes, and verbal confrontations with players not playing in formation as there are no real stops in play. It’s a very important position.

Same for a captain in basketball and football regarding officials. The on field voice of a soccer team is the goaltender. To suggest that the soccer captain is the only voice to relay strategy is wrong. A soccer captain is similar to a hockey or basketball captain.
If the captain in soccer was so important they would never sub out the captain but it happens all the time.

Please! You haven’t a clue what you’re talking about. The keeper controls his defensive sets on set pieces, and helps set the backline (most CB’s keep their backline cohesive in formation and the trap). CDM or CAM usually helps keep the midfield in formation. The captain is the sole voice of the coach when a formation or strategy change is made in field. If a sub is sent in to signal a change in form or strategy, the captain is notified and must be aware of all positions knowledge of the change in tactics. The coach can be heard by most, but players rely on the cap to be the ONE voice if there are conflicting visions or tension between players.

And in soccer a player can get carded quickly when arguing with an official, also “working” the official is sometimes a key component to a match. I’m not saying it’s completely different in football or basketball, but the relationship between cap and ref is unique in soccer.

When a captain is subbed, notice it isn’t just the player coming on that takes the armband. It’s determined prior to play who takes second and third role. And it’s usually the same player the wears the armband (esp for international teams), that’s because it matters. It’s not symbolic

Good grief. Nothing you said is different than what I said but the arm band isnt that special. The captain for Liverpool who is the world champ is Jordan Henderson. When he is off it is Milner and the Virgil Van Dyke. Van Dyke is the best player. Henderson and Milner are team vets but not stars.

liverpool is my team. Hendo is respected by his teammates, and is one of Klopp’s favorites because of his knowledge of tactics and leadership. Same for Milner who plays both in mid, and at FB. VVD is a leader naturally, and has earned the respect of his teammates over the course of the season. Notice he didn’t wear the band in the beginning of the season? It took time for him to get that trust from Klopp.

And I NEVER said Captain means “best player”, I said that the captain is a revered position in soccer - chosen by both players and coaches. And the player that wears the armband brings leadership and a knowledge of tactics that is crucial to having a cohesive and effective team.

Rapinoe not only is a great player on the field, she also exhibits these traits, and is invaluable for the USWNT. And obviously not overrated. Your hatred of all things gay not withstanding

Rapinoe is the captain because she is the oldest. Thats it. Almost every player on the US team is captain of their pro team. There is nothing special about her wearing it. The soccer captain is no different than basketball, hockey and probably others. She is a good player but she is inconsistent.

She is the biggest distraction now that Hope Solo is gone.

Henderson is the Captain because he has been there longer than the other starters. I think only Milner has been there longer. The idea that the armband is special is pretty overrated.
