Take Trump and his ridiculous promises out of the equation. Is border security worth the investment?
You can't take Trump out of the picture as he is the entire picture. This entire episode is due to him and his chaotic behavior and political games. Dems have offered solutions, they have agreed with the Republicans in the Senate and guess who has turned his back on it? Trump. So, you can't say take him out of the equation. Trust me, I would like to take him out of every equation but unfortunately people like you will not stand up to his horrendous actions and administration and call him out for it.

Yes, border security is important. So are the DACA recipients. So are many other aspects on immigration. But Trump (and enablers such as you) won't come to the table in an honest manner and do what is best for the country. That does not include funding for a vague dollar amount in order for the jackass to win over his political base. Come to the table with specific plans for specific physical barriers but do that in regular order of congress. Not during a CR process while holding the country at ransom.

The compromise is you give Trump his funding amount while getting something in return.
They offered him one earlier and he backed out. What is the compromise and negotiation this time around? Haven't seen anything.

Take Trump and his ridiculous promises out of the equation. Is border security worth the investment? Absolutely. Should the Democrats withhold spending on border security because of Trump's political ploys and semantics? Not if they mean what they say about border security, especially considering the fact that they were so willing to do so prior to Trump.

The compromise is you give Trump his funding amount while getting something in return.

But put the politics of it aside, border security IS a good investment and as a Libertarian I'm much more willing to spend $5 billion on border security than some other boondoggle, and we both know there's PLENTY of programs well above $5 billion that could/should be cut/scrapped/eliminated. (Remember High Speed Rail)

I guess compromise and negotiation is too much to ask for.
Literally people are saying that after 9/11 our government took unprecedented steps to create protection for our citizens, yet in the formation of an entire new bureaucracy and the compromising of our citizens rights, we are no safer at the borders?

If this is all about illegals being in this nation, spend half the funding on a wall on special prosecutors charged with finding and prosecuting companies and individuals that house and employ illegals.

You can't negotiate if you're not in town and willing to do so. Democrats made one offer of $1.3 billion a month ago, and a bigger offer about a year ago, but since then the two sides are at an impasse.

It sounds like, ultimately, the answer for you two is going to be to hope he caves, which I don't think he will. So good luck with that.

I agree that there needs to be a wide range approach to immigration as a whole. From border security (fences/walls/patrols/surveillance/etc) to complete immigration reform.

It is being reported that the House will pass a bill on Thursday that has some republican support and is similar to the Senate Bill passed earlier. But McConnel won't bring it back up without Trump's approval of it prior to the Senate voting. That's right, Trump will again make his move to keep the government shut. So again, everything said here by the Trumper's is pure alternative facts fed to them by right wing outlets.

I take it there’s no wall funding in it?

Let's see what's in the bill first. I would wager that if they don't offer some funding closer to what he's asking for, to build a wall/fence/barrier/etc, then they're wasting their time with it.

You know what he wants. You know how he acts and behaves. You need to work with that in mind.

No, the congress doesn't have to cave to his childish behavior and his political games. Time to grow up and do what is best for the country.

You're asking that Trump suddenly grow up and stop his childish behavior? You've got a better shot at winning The Masters in 2019 than that happening.

You work with what you're given, and you're given an ego maniac who's use to getting his way. So you develop a compromise plan that lets him think he's winning while doing what's right for the nation.

No... I steer them in the direction I want and let them think they've got the freewill to make the decisions. I make them eat an apple while they think they're eating a candy bar.

Keep thinking you can handle Trump like any other rational politician, and you'll keep being surprised by his rhetoric and actions.

Wake up people.

Caving to his boondoggle is not "waking up" and would probably only embolden him. This is the silliest negotiation tactic I can ever think of. lol.

Wait til Trump's poors can't get their IRS checks and the Farmers he f'd in trade can't get their welfare payments.

Don't think I need to get anywhere with him. Should we give in to every demand from NK too? I mean, you know what he wants. You know how he acts and behaves.

If your good with the government shutdown, then you're correct. But if you not, then you need to negotiate with him in a manner that gets around his personality.

You can't bury your head in the sand, throw your arms up and say, "He's not being reasonable, he's got to change...." You'd sound like one of Trump's ex-wives.

I'm not saying he needs to change or will suddenly become reasonable at all. He's ian ill-tempered baby that has no business as POTUS, but that doesn't mean people should cave to him. Actual conservative GOP Senators and Congress will eventually override his sad veto threats.

Should conservatives cave to the upcoming Prez Lib that demands medicare for all? Of course not.

Should they? They have in the past, and they'll be expected to in the future.

Right now though, the Democrats should find a compromise that will work for both parties.

Border security for an appropriate amount, with no money wasted on a wall. Trump and House Rs are the ones not compromising. GOP controlled Senate passed it just a few weeks ago.

I mean hell...they should just give him $5bn for the wall and be done with it, amirite? What amount satisfies Trump? He's publicly stated, on many occasions, that he has to get $5bn for the wall.

Trump wanted WAY more than $5 billion. Giving him $5 billion for something you've already voted in favor of in the past is a no brainier.

i want details. when asking for funding in a government agency, you must provide details. how does he know how much he needs when he doesn't even know where and what materials.

When did someone vote for $5bn to spent on Trump's wall before? Trump still wants/needs more than $5bn....that's just what he's requesting to be appropriated by Sep 30 of 2019. This boondoggle is going to saaaaaaiiiiiiilllllll way past that amount.

I don’t think that’s true at all. When was the last time our government had a surplus?

When the Republican Congress made it so, while combined with the dot com bubble and a severely reduced geopolitical threat due to the fall of communism?

where is it to be built. with what materials. what effect on the environment. what permits. what cost. who owns the property. any federal funds require extensive digs for historical artifacts. if built along the Rio Grand is it flood proof. has geological test been done on the site?
