West Virginia March Madness record


Bob Huggins is untouchable as the best WVU basketball coach in March Madness, up to the Sweet Sixteen level. He made it to the Final Four once.

Fred Schaus had four first-round losses before the 1959 run to the national title game with Jerry West that WVU barely lost to California. West became the only player on a non-title team to be named Final Four MVP.

George King, earlier the Morris Harvey coach, had two Sweet Sixteens and a first-round loss.

Bucky Waters had a first-round loss in his only March Madness appearance.

Gale Catlett had 1 Sweet Sixteen, three 2nd rounds and 4 first-round losses.

John Beilein has 1 Elite Eight and 1 Sweet Sixteen.

Bob Huggins had 4 Sweet Sixteens, 1 2nd round, 3 1st round losses.

Huggins has been to the Sweet Sixteen four times. Schaus once en route to Elite Eight and a national title game in the same year. King two Sweet Sixteens. Catlett 1 Sweet Sixteen. Beilein 2 Sweet Sixteens with 1 advancing to an Elite Eight.

So all the WVU coaches combined over a 62-year period have been to the Sweet Sixteen six times to Huggins’ 4 in 8 seasons (HALF his WVU career).

Only Schaus and Beilein have been to the Elite Eight with WVU. Huggins has never advanced beyond the Sweet Sixteen.

You kind of contradicted yourself by saying Huggins made it to the Final 4 and then said Huggins has never made it past the Sweet 16.......

Gale Catlett had 1 Sweet Sixteen, three 2nd rounds and 4 first-round losses.

The irony in this one CFE is that Gale's team knocked off Huggs UC team to get there. Jarod West with a three to end it if memory serves me well.

Another irony occurred with Huggs and Gale way back in the late 70's. It happened in Charleston WV when a visiting UC Bearcat team [Coached by Gale Catlett] beat a WVU team led by... yes.... Bob Huggins as a player.

I was there. Kinda bittersweet. Gardner just couldn't take us where Gale and Huggs did.

I thought you would have mentioned the fact that both of huggins final four appearances were with teams that he didn't fully recruit.

No, you're not doing better than that. You're deflecting and diverting. Huggins has coached twice as long as Matta, so adding up raw numbers makes no sense, but you know that already.

Thad Matta is currently unemployed and the only school that wants him is a basement dweller. What about the other 3 I listed???

But look at all the talent Huggins had at Cinci and his one year at Kansas St and tell me his teams always underachieved in the tournament based upon their talent level.

Thad was offered the Georgia job, and interviewed with Ole Miss, but was not willing to take either job. My understanding is that his contract with tOSU requires him to consider other jobs, or lose part of his buyout, but I don't know any of the details. Whether it is due to his back/foot drop problem or something else, Thad does not appear to want to coach at this point. He was fired after his worst two seasons at Ohio State. His teams went 21-14, and 17-15 in those last two seasons, and never won fewer than 20 games before the last season. Huggins' WVU teams went 13-19 in 2012-13, and 17-16 in 2013-14, which would have been enough to have gotten him fired at Ohio State, I can assure you.

Yeah, if Cincinnati had won only FIVE more games in the NCAA Tournament, then the Bearcats would have been national champs instead of losing in the second round to seventh-seeded Tulsa. #WildSpeculation

If something happened to Huggins where he was unable to continue as head coach I think Thad Matta would be someone wvu would and should consider if he was interested. He knows the area and is a proven winner. Schools like OSU expect more than the wvu's and Cincy's of the world. Huggins last 9 seasons at cincy he only made it past the second round once and that was 2000 or 2001 can't remember. That would get you fired at Osu, Duke, UK, UNC but not at cincy or wvu. When he did get canned at cincy the only place that wanted him was K state and that program was in horrible shape at the time.

He knows the area and is a proven winner. Schools like OSU expect more than the wvu's and Cincy's of the world. Huggins last 9 seasons at cincy he only made it past the second round once and that was 2000 or 2001 can't remember. That would get you fired at Osu, Duke, UK, UNC but not at cincy or wvu. When he did get canned at cincy the only place that wanted him was K state and that program was in horrible shape at the time.

When Have I ever said anything negative about Huggins? Huggins is a good coach for a school like wvu but schools above wvu expect more. You don't keep your job by just making it to the tourney at blue bloods. If something happened to huggins you don't think matta would be a good candidate? Maybe you should get your facts straight when you post. I would'nt exactly say Georgia is a basement dweller. Definately not the best job but either was K State either.
BTW what exactly have we lost?

Dumb ha ha. Obviously Beilein is a much better coach than Hewitt and Davis. And for most of their careers he is much better than Ollie. I can understand an argument regarding Beilein/Matta.
