Disagreeing is not what makes you a dick. Acting like a dick did the truck. If you want to have an intelligent conversation with anyone you might want to realize that droughts, floods and typhoons are not some new phenomena and three years of data is laughable. Now I will go back into my cave and out of your disrespectful presence.
No you are right they are not new, but the frequency and severity sure are. As to higher temps it has been longer, the 3 years just happen to be the last thing I saw, so you got the reference. As to being a Richard, look at your responses kinda sets a response in the tone!!

Data was a little old, 2013
Tornadoes, hurricanes and rainfall has only gone down since 2013 but whatever you say. Your link just rehashes all the same information that has been stated for the past years but it doesnt show an increase in storms or intensity.

I have learned:

- Bill Raney lied
- Bill Raney didn't lie
- Some people believe the weather is extreme. Some don't.
- Some people don't believe Obama and Hillary want to ruin coal even though they said they did and it's happening.

All on a pay WVU football board...just on page 3. Vernon - lock this up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I blame Dana's closed practices. Look at what we have to resort to for our August entertainment!

Actually tornados are down, but typhoons are up as are severe flooding and other related severe weather events globally!

Dave come out of the cave big guy. What about the floods, snows, droughts, typhoons, should I go on. Hottest annual temps over the past 3 yrs, these are facts big guy. Extreme weather ever hear of it!!
That makes sense, I guess. I just don't understand how you measure the impact of coal burned in US vs. that burned in China and other third world countries. US consumed coal should be down a bit, is that going to equate on reduction/elimination of the "extreme weather" you refer to? Is there a logical way to follow your hypothesis? Or is this considered factual information at this time?

The entire world believes in climate change except for a portion of middle america. It's embarrassing really. And what is the fear in acknowledging it? I will bet 90% of it is the unwillingness to admit that the other side is right. Also I'm a republican and I believe that personal responsibility extends to how I treat the earth.

Sorry but to say that Raney has no incentive to use selective, skewed, or flat out wrong data is just you applying your bias to the situation. He has every incentive to make coal sound like the best thing out there. The fact is that coal mining is on the way out and most likely won't exist in 20 yrs if not sooner. Where will WV be? Do we continue to blame others or have some self responsibility to change our own fortune and future.
He is President of the association. Normal people will probably agree that he will present it in the most favorable light. You would not expect him to accentuate the negative. But to say he has outright lied about the employment and production numbers is totally misrepresenting his objective. He has no need to lie. Just use the absolute numbers provided by state agencies to make reports is enough. Neither do I have a "bias to the situation". What benefit would it be? I do not own a screw in the industry at the time. Just use the best info available and I will be consistent and continue reading Bill's reports.

May surprise you to know that I am aware that any extraction of a non-renewable product is "on the way out". It is not being replaced, period, but there is still a hell of a lot of coal available to be mined. It is not dead yet. Obama administration has given it his best shot. The thing he has accomplished is to increase the cost of extraction enough to make it nearly cost competitive with other forms of energy. The only interest I have is to not jack the cost of coal up. Allow the market to work. The added cost of coal resulted in my electricity company to add a line to the bill that will allow them to get relief by billing me for the added cost of producing electricity. from coal. That should not be a function of the government in an attempt to regulate the use of coal.

I am taken aback by your polite and respectful response, given my sarcastic post. I'll try to respond in kind.

Bill Raney is the President of the trade association representing 90% of the coal operators in the state. It's literally his job to paint a rosy picture of WV coal.

The DOE formed the Energy Information Adminstration in 1977 and is, by law, a non-partisan organization. They produce voluminous statistics on coal, petroleum, natural gas, electric, renewables and nuclear energy.

Having said that...

It appears Mr. Raney may be correct. This chart indicates coal is currently $2.22 per million BTU. Natural gas is $3.13 per MMBTU. These are national averages. This chart shows $2.39 for WV. Maybe I should look at the actual statistics before I pop off next time...

Edit: From here

A fuel price comparison based on equivalent energy content ($/MMBtu) does not reflect differences in energy conversion efficiency (heat rate) among different types of generators. Gas-fired combined-cycle units tend to be more efficient than coal-fired steam units. The second tab shows coal and natural gas prices on an equivalent energy content and efficiency basis. For the seventeenth consecutive month, the price of natural gas at Henry Hub was below the price of Central Appalachian coal on a $/MWh basis.
May I suggest you and all others on the forum become familiar with AGENCY LAW. Someone in congress develops a thought of a needed law to accomplish a goal he has set. Congress gets a little lazy and instead of properly setting the budget for this new Agency, they are given a cost of living raise annually. The administration of the new Agency selected via politics and each President can name the agency Administration and set their agenda.

Now you have an Agency that originally had a purpose, but ever new President gives the agency the direction to be followed. After a few years, you have a well funded New Agency that acts strictly as an extension of the President in office. The Agency head sets the agenda and adds regulations as they see fit and congress is effectively removes from making those laws. Agency head also has flexibility to enforce or ignore regulations on the books.

In no way am I attempting to look down or tell you something you already know. Please fee free to correct any error that I have portrayed in Agency Law.

Oh and I guess all the crazy *** weather the world has seen over the past five years is just a cycle? Sorry have to call BS on this...global warming is most definitely real. And yes I grew up in a coal family and still see a place for clean coal but things have to change.
I have no problem with global warming or weather change(whichever it is called now). I remember snows in the '40's as a child in So WV. I also remember floods even before there was strip mining and very few underground mines. Can you tell me what caused that extreme weather? One time in my years, I saw the river totally frozen over for long stretches. As it started to thaw, I flowed down stream and piled up onto the other ice causing a dam. Ice piled up to 10' high. As it broke and flowed on down stream, it caused an unbelievable site. Assumed that all towns downstream would be leveled, but some way it worked itself out to an even flow.

I have no problem with weather change. I have seen it over the years. I just refuse to bet the entire economy on a fix until we are 100% sure of the cause. We ain't close to being there. So I will just continue accepting weather change.

I'd say that it is down quite a bit since 2000-2010 and newer data is using more reliable monitoring.

Global rainfall data

Tropical weather data

I really don't see how any of these correlate to "extreme weather" as you previously claimed. Seems pretty normal/average.

Excuse me if I catagorically discharge any information by the worst political agency in our government as informational. The epa?

The EPA is a joke. If climate change was such an urgent crisis and a bigger threat than ISIS then maybe they should do more to control it. Sure, they put hard working West Virginians out of work but do not regulate the countless numbers of celebrities that own huge homes and contribute to global warming. OregonMountie, I am sure you fly pretty often. You are contributing to climate change. Shame on you.

Oh but that's different, right?

No you are right it is s concern, that is the reason I take the train as much as possible throughout China and other countries...EPA has their problems, but their data collection is not one of them!!

Data collection may not be a problem. I doubt they collect it. Reporting on the data is a problem because they are a political organization not a scientific one.

You should probably just start taking a bike. Taking the train is also very harmful to the environment.

Electric...but then you are right the energy has to be created to run it. Guess we just walk..

You probably should. Kids in Southern WV are going without right now because their fathers have been put out of work in the name of climate change. You should sacrifice as well for the greater good of mankind.
