The answer is contracts and or pulling the reigns back on unlimited transfers.

Make them sign a contract that owes money back to the university if they were to leave. If they have better options elsewhere it would still be the correct move.

Unlimited transfers itself will be harder to pull back on since they opened that box.

With that said, the people bitching about EJ leaving are also going to open their arms if one of those productive receivers from Kentucky would transfer in. It’s the same story with them. It’s just a weird time and you are going to lose production every year if your team isn’t up on the success mountain. Whether you make everyone happy or not there’s going to be turnover with how things are in this current landscape.
They should have made any player who opted out of a game pay back their schollies when this all started. That woulda helped. Dont play? Pay back the scholly then since you didnt hold up your end of the deal.

College football has always been the NFL minor league for free. It is now becoming official and they are going to have to support it financially.

No reason that I could see (don't see practices) that he shouldn't of been #1 all season. Again, I go back to prior to our first game, HCMR kept implying Rahmir and Emmett were 1/2, leading all the way up through game week. Then gameday, it was Dowdell. Very ?? Then it was Dowdell/Rahmir with Emmett getting 3rd string reps for the first half of the season.

Probably said, F it, don't want to go through this again. What's going to change, same RB coach, same HC, I'll take my chances elsewhere.

Something a lil ***** would do
You give me unending **** about Gebbia for 6 years, and then you turn around and do the same thing to another player you effin' loser. Grow the **** up.

What are you talking about? Why are you so Jeffrey-Dahmer obsessed with Gebbia? You’re nuts, and you appear to have anger control issues. Are you an adult?

Everything you say is pure self-projection and reflects badly back on yourself. Almost feel bad because you have severe mental issues that are clearly displayed in your posts.

You called me an effin loser and told me to grow the **** up, while, in the same post, telling me my posts reflect badly on me, and claim I self-project.

Take a moment, or the rest of your life, to mull that one over dipshit. Again, are you an adult, because you’re operating at about a 4th grade level. #gebbiafanboy

Back to the topic at hand, players like Emmet and Williams leaving in the portal just epitomizes how terrible this transfer portal era has been overall for college football. What would have been two great Husker success stories and lifers at Nebraska in any other era, these stories are cut short due to money and greed, short term reactive thinking, and bad influences both inside and out. It's not the college football I grew up a fan of, and certainly don't think I'm the only one with that sentiment. It's bad enough to watch the bad football we've seen over the last decade, but to top it off, eventually these are all just going to become mercenary players jumping from team to team. There's no longer going to be any joy as a fan watching your favorite players grow in the program through the years, if they're all just going to come and go the very next year, and go to the highest bidder as mercenaries. Didn't think I'd ever say this, but college football really is a tough sell anymore.

This is the kind of thing thats going to make college football less and less interesting to follow and get to know a team.

In years past you could be excited about players coming back or watch promising freshmen develop over the years, and now its all scattered and wont feel like the same team year to year, like its a whole new program.

I get that we suck and we want to flip the roster, but this guy is an example of one we wanted to see take off next year.
100% agree. It sucks the life and fun out of it. From one season to the next you don't know who will be on the team.

What I used to love about college football was that starting on signing day you got a commitment from a kid that usually lasted 4-5 years. They grew with the team and at the school. Williams and EJ were going to be those kids that started out unheralded and overlooked. NU believed in them and they were starting to become stars here. Then they decide to take their talents elsewhere.

Would we have kept Frazier if the transfer portal existed back then? Maybe not. I know the story goes he was homesick his freshman year. Would we have kept both Crouch and Newcombe. No way. Both guys grew into good players at other positions. Suh stated he almost left in 2007. Probably would have been a portal loss.

Last season we had barely any portal attrition and I felt relatively good. And for the most part the portal has mostly been for guys that weren't starters or guys with star potential. Now it's everyone that wants bigger paydays. This isn't sustainable short of becoming what has ruined MLB. It will be the Yankees and Dodgers and nobody else has a chance.

For those of you commenting you don't like where CFB is going, you never should have supported expanded playoffs. CFB had the only interesting regular season. Its a different sport now. That said, I am going to trust Holgerson to get the RB room right.
I think the playoff is the only smart thing that they've done in years. The portal and to a lesser extent NIL are killing the sport. Loyalty is gone. How can kids just switch schools at a whim? What about degrees and culture and relationships? All those things matter too. When players go to 3-4 universities you can't possibly have formed strong foundations in any of them.
I do think it's good to have some form of NIL and paying players to share in the massive revenue pot, but just like the NFL we need caps soon. The only problem is the NCAA which everyone complained about lost its teeth and is now the equivalent of the UN security council. It's a massive free-for-all and not an environment conducive to success for anyone.

The reality is that EJ is a good running back but there will be several good running backs in the portal. NU Has a good young QB and an excellent veteran OC. EJ could be replaced by a better version of himself.

Should be a contract between player and school to accept NIL for 3-4 years
Player accepts money them he is contracted to that school, leave early and forfeit/return money

I like EJ. He is/was our best back. And often overlooked is his physical durability. Unlike Rahmir or Ervin who could never stay healthy, EJ rarely got injured. He also has good hands as a receiver and is a fairly decent pass protector on blitzes. I hope he ends up staying.

All that said, his biggest drawback is that he lacks breakaway speed. Even if he stays we need to find in the portal a guy with all of EJ’s skills but with greater speed. I know, easier said than done. But it is what we need.

sucks, but we can find someone…or someone’s with his skill set. I’m confident that DH will do a significantly better job than Satt with giving more touches to the most talented backs next year. Feels like we have been struggling to do that for the better part of 5 seasons.

We’ll be fine. Dana’s going to attract a quality RB. I love EJ but let’s not confuse him with Saquan Barkley.

My exact thoughts. Finally got to show what he could do, but definitely replaceable. Good luck to him.

he flirted with leaving last year

Rhule talked him out of it

then he sat and watched bums who are worse than him carry the ball for 9 games

fool me once....
Then Rhule hired Dana who started to make him look like an all conference player. Sucks for him because I think he goes into next year as the starter and could potentially have a massive year. Dana knew his talent and how to get him involved.

One really has to question his decision.

need a better back than EJ. had spurts, last couple games were fine, but otherwise, he, just like all the others get taken down by a hard sneeze, blow blocking assignments and get our QB killed far too often, and lack the speed to really make themselves standout.
