I know, but my point was directed at the kicker's failure when it really counted.
Yeah I understood that. I'm even more frustrated by our defensive failure though than some are with the kicking situation. We KNEW our kicker and punter were inconsistent. Hell we've been pretty inconsistent there MOST years for many of the last 20 years. Defense needs to be a constant.

My wife, who is fairly astute for a woman, and as a Husker fan, sees things that never occur to me. She says it looks like TW was far less animated than normal calling the defense Friday night.

She understands that we've changed our overall scheme this year and wonders if, in reality, TW is not bought into the way our secondary is playing? Is it possible Butler convinced Rhule of a different way to approach the overall defense and Rhule has bought into it, but TW hasn't?

She just said he seemed so much more subdued when he has previously been fired up.
I don't doubt that he was subdued after their first drive and watching Hill limp around. It was obvious that we were in for a long night and what ever we had game planned wasn't going to work.

Maybe going on the road to a less than raucous environment may benefit the defense a lot in the area of communication.

If we continue with another week of poor tackling, then we are really in trouble. You just can't be missing tackles on the types of athlete's that IND, OSU and USC are gonna throw at you.

It's looking like a 6-6 season, assuming we can find 3 more teams to beat.

Agreed - our defense in terms of hitting - tackling and being in position was a drastic difference from Colorado to Illinois. Looked like a different team altogether.

Zatechka's podcast posted in another thread has some great analysis of a couple of our breakdowns on D.

Even when Ty had his total meltdown on the sidelines with either Gifford or Mbayor, that is never a good sign. I sense the defensive frustration and it needs to get fixed with a possible return to TW having total say in the scheme and game plan.

The poor tackling, the often times confusion in the secondary, and that gaping hole in the middle of the field is not just gonna go away until you close it up and make it go away. We can't be having receivers running around wide open.

Sometimes when you try something new and it doesn't work, just reverting back to what you had success with last year can be a HUGE mental lift for the defenders. MENTAL lift means EMOTION, which has been sorely lacking the last 2 weeks.

We need to recapture our mojo and confidence.

case in point, Tony White and our defense. 5.8 yards per carry for their running back. Now do people understand why I was so concerned about our run defense after the UNI game?
UNI is terrible. They had to rally to beat no-scholarship St Thomas. We have better players, but something is wrong with the scheme. Other teams have figured it out. And it doesn’t help that we have one LB and one S that are way too small to hold up for 4Q to any team that commits to smash mouth football.

Hartzog does worry me defending power running teams which we will be getting a heavy dose of that next week against Rutgers..

Maybe they'll ask us not to be so loud

Every single former blackshirt I've listened to who has watched practices has said that 6-7 wins and a bowl game would be a successful season for this group. Most of us bought in to the hype from the media but the fact remains while we're fairly deep on the O line in numbers, most of them are very young. Raiola is still a freshman. Our best edge players on defense are still sophomores and too light in the pants. We have one true freshman edge that got here late who physically might be ready but isn't there mentally yet.

That said, the thing that gives me concern is what happened to our defense Friday night. I'm not really anymore worried about the kickers than I am any other season. They're ALWAYs one kick away from needing counseling. It's a weird job where you stand around for 95% of the plays then are expected to run on the field and perfectly execute a fairly technical physical act. Takes a special mindset The defense on the other hand plays half the game and NOBODY was worried about them. They stunk Friday night. They more than anything else didn't get it done. White needs to figure it out quickly.

All of us IMO are in a wait and see mode or at least we should be. Nobody is critical of that view. I'm all in on Rhule though. I think he's the best guy we've had since Tom but there's no guarantees.....EVER..
Knock it off with that loser talk. 6 to 7 wins would be a failure with this group, with as much senior leadership as we have on the defensive side, and with Dylan living up to his end of the bargain.

Are you calling Jay Moore and Matt Vrzal losers? Dare you to say it to their faces.

if we throw it 30 times it will be very, very disconcerting.

you have to have discipline as a play caller to run the football effectively.

it has everything to do with want-to.
Does the fact that we have Raiola make us want to throw more?

Teams had a whole year to study White's tendencies and scheme. We've got some injuries on the backside that aren't helping us either. I think communication was a big problem for us Friday night.
Hmmm I thought it was the missed tackles and guys out of position.

I was saying the whole game. You gotta keep running or you get one dimensional and they can pin their ears bag after your QB.
There was a drive in the third-quarter where they ran six straight times. It was tough sledding.

In my limited experience with Vrzal he is a total douchebag. Its something watching a 40+ year old still have roid rages over nothing.
Yeah he is an interesting dude. Nice to the people he likes, but overall kind of douchey. He's got that 1970's gym teacher vibe, and I just remember him going off about how NU didn't hire "Duzzi" (Pat Narduzzi) and that we just gotta be tough. His whole mantra is just you gotta be tough and beat the hell out of people. To hell with technique and everything else. Just beat people up. I'm not sure Pitt does that now, but he loved him at MSU.

He brings nothing to the table when he talks on 1620 and literally says the same thing every week. We get it Vrz. You played during the glory days. Good job.
