So my wife and I have been watching the NCAA Basketball tourney and she made the observation of all of the various basketball teams considered in the Midwest and why Nebraska still can’t have any success?
I didn’t have an intelligent answer. Iowa, Drake, KU, KState, Creighton, Iowa St, Missouri, just to name what I recall in the tourney.
Can’t be lack of fans, climate, facilities, budget.

I don’t get it either… and fans are totally loyal….
Most fanbases aren’t loyal unless they win … thus there is actual pressure on the athletic department to win

Trev knows the fans will show and support a terrible product - no reason to really stress about getting better

Then that’s on him obviously

The literal inventor of basketball started the program at Kansas in 1898, so that one makes sense. The curse around Nebraska is real because that one doesn’t make sense any other way.

Why - what in the last several years has led him to any other conclusion?

Our athletic department is the envy of every business - they have produced the worst product of any major college over the last 5+ years and have record profits to show for it - without any sign of letting up

There is absolutely no incentive to improve the product

Why would you consider serving steak when your customers are more than happy to gobble up and pay for spam

I will never subscribe to the fact that, because of fans showing up anyway, the University athletic program doesn’t want to become a significant factor in basketball.

Want to and have to are 2 different things

You think Fred is coming back because Trev is feeling any pressure to have a successful basketball program in terms of ncaa tourney play

Probably the only decent decision made in that program was the old Irishman hiring Danny Nee. He wasn't John Wooden but he had some ambition.
It's not even bad enough we are historically inept but we manage to get worse.
Our current AD didn't create this but his mishandling of the Frost firing makes me fear his next move.

Fred's contract is like paying for quality steak. If the athletic dept doesn't care let's just get someone cheap.

No Fred’s contract is like paying the chef a huge salary to produce spam - but because the restaurant is packed every night there is no reason to pay the severance package and hire a new chef to improve the meals

Great home court advantage at the old Coliseum. Was there when we knocked off #1 Michigan when Fred Hare threw in an over the head shot from the lane to win as the buzzer went off.

I guarantee that if the vault was only half full Trev would be making a change. Both football and basketball fan bases have been way too loyal. Time to find something else to do until the product is better.

Our coach has led 1 team to 1 winning record (42-40 bulls) in 10 years & our AD could care less

Nobody should buy a single ticket until he’s guillotined

We're cursed. The Devaney Center must have been on top of a native American burial ground or something similar.
You're probably right. Or maybe it was the BobFather himself who made a pact with the devil. "In exchange for decades of success and relevancy on the gridiron you can have our basketball program."

History and tradition mean some things in college sports. Each of these programs have historical success exponentially better than Neb in basketball.

NIL cans disrupt this.

Do you honestly believe that nonsense?

Do you honestly believe that Trev would have decided to flush an entire season (years 5 for Frost and Hoiberg) before it even began if attendance at the games were drastically down?

The quality of the high school players in Nebraska has gone up considerably over the past decade or so. There is high school talent in Nebraska, more so now than ever. Now is the time for Husker basketball to make their move towards winning. Creighton is there, Nebraska needs to get there....(we'll probably suck for the foreseeable future however 🙁)

A little tardy to the party on this one, but I do think that you could make a team, especially this year of Nebraska only kids and be in the tournament. Granted you could say that probably about most states, but you are right about the talent. You might be a little thin at the post, but here goes:

Aguek Arop - San Diego State
Max Murrell - Stanford
Isaac Traudt - UVA
Josiah Allick - New Mexico
Jasen Green - Creighton
Chucky Hepburn - Wisconsin
Shereef Mitchell - Creighton
Hunter Salis - Gonzaga
Baylor Sheierman - Creighton
Same Griesel - Nebraska
William Kyle - SDSU
This would be your top eleven IMO then to fill out the roster you could go with
Donovan William - Pacific
Jayden Dawson - Loyola
Jkin Johnson - ODU
Frankie Fidler - Omaha
Ed Chang - Idaho State
Saint Thomas- Loyola (although not on the team any more don't know what happened there)
Sam Hoiberg - Nebraska
Charlie Easley - SDSU
Maybe either one or both of the Hastreiter brothers at SDSU or NDSU.

There is a fair amount of young talent coming up in the next couple years like you said.

You missed Tonje at Colorado State, 14+ pts/game average this year. He'd be top 10 on this list. Either way, great list of players out of Nebraska high schools...

I watched Stu Lantz, LeRoy Chalk and I think Chuck Jura at the Coliseum. Then got to play rec league bball there in the 70s. Still remember the rickety old wooden bleachers. My high school gym was nicer and could hold more fans.

Arguably, our best up ticks for NU basketball in the last forty years were fueled by in-state recruits- during the Hoppen/Jackman/Sealer era, Chubick/Badget/Strickland era, Rich King era. And other key players had Nebraska ties or were recruited out of nearby Kansas City.
