It had become something it was not, and it needs a reset. Keeping it shut down for the rest of the year is fine. Make the team learn how to play as a team, right now the blackshirts symbol is just as stupid as the "winning tradition" patchI don't like this decision, and I'm a MJ fan. I think Blackshirts should be awarded to 1st string starters.
This.I don't care at all but weren't they just to identify the starters?
It has never ever been about X amount of yards or points.
Not if defense isn't good. I understand your point but I see what mickeys doing as wellI don't like this decision, and I'm a MJ fan. I think Blackshirts should be awarded to 1st string starters.
I remember Bo getting testy about awarding Blackshirts when the press kept asking him about it, but I believe they were eventually awarded mid season. I don't remember which year that was.Any Husker historians know when the last time blackshirts weren’t handed out for the majority of a season
I suppose at one point it actually said something about you to be a starter on a Nebraska defense.This.
It's the idiots who made a big deal of it with ceremony and earning it and all that ********.
You a starter? Blackshirt.
This is a good point.what other long standing traditions should cease when the team isn’t very good
take the horseshoe down?
do away with the tunnel walk?
Take the N off the helmets?
Give it all a break and lighten up..what other long standing traditions should cease when the team isn’t very good
take the horseshoe down?
do away with the tunnel walk?
Take the N off the helmets?
Most likely can’t.. but under the circumstances I can understand the decision.. Break them down and build them back up..Any Husker historians know when the last time blackshirts weren’t handed out for the majority of a season
Yes, none of that stuff is important.what other long standing traditions should cease when the team isn’t very good
take the horseshoe down?
do away with the tunnel walk?
Take the N off the helmets?
I don't like your opinion.I don't like this decision, and I'm a MJ fan. I think Blackshirts should be awarded to 1st string starters.

Comment a Ioway fan would make..It had become something it was not, and it needs a reset. Keeping it shut down for the rest of the year is fine. Make the team learn how to play as a team, right now the blackshirts symbol is just as stupid as the "winning tradition" patch

Exactly. That is the tradition. We've just made it more because we started calling them that. Then there's the 90's dynasty that redefined us on offense and defense. Waited all those years and then we dominated like no one has ever done. So, blackshirts becomes part of the lexicon of the college game. When really all the tradition ever was, was to award someone with the starting position on defense. They wore black jerseys in practice. Because they were the starters. That was our tradition.I don't like this decision, and I'm a MJ fan. I think Blackshirts should be awarded to 1st string starters.
Those starters deserved them every year because they were a top 30 defense just about every year.Exactly. That is the tradition. We've just made it more because we started calling them that. Deserved is not the tradition. The tradition is we gave the starters the black jerseys. You didn't win it for play. You got it because you were named the starter. That was it. All this other stuff is attributed to it because we were so good in the 90's. The blackshirts doesn't mean that you were the baddest defense around. It just became the mean that. It's a stupid motivational tool to withhold them. How about coach them up? What good does withholding the black practice jerseys do? Does our D suddenly play with super powers? Nope. Those starters deserved them every year because they were a top 30 defense just about every year.
Traditions change. Especially when circumstances change. The only reason the blackshirts became a tradition anybody cared about is because our defenses were consistently very good over a long period of time. They're not living up to a blackshirt standard, so they're taken away. I see no real problem with that.Deserved is not the tradition. The tradition is we gave the starters the black jerseys. Well I do have a problem with that. It's not tradition and it's not effective. Duh.Traditions change. Especially when circumstances change.
