I don't like this decision, and I'm a MJ fan. I think Blackshirts should be awarded to 1st string starters.

It had become something it was not, and it needs a reset. Keeping it shut down for the rest of the year is fine. Make the team learn how to play as a team, right now the blackshirts symbol is just as stupid as the "winning tradition" patch

I figure if you’re a defensive player on the field, you are a blackshirt, rise to the occasion and play your best!

I don't care at all but weren't they just to identify the starters?

It has never ever been about X amount of yards or points.

I remember Bo getting testy about awarding Blackshirts when the press kept asking him about it, but I believe they were eventually awarded mid season. I don't remember which year that was.

I suppose at one point it actually said something about you to be a starter on a Nebraska defense.

Most likely can’t.. but under the circumstances I can understand the decision.. Break them down and build them back up..

Not a big deal for the rest of this year.. it's not like the blackshirts weren't awarded in 2022.. they were.

There are bigger things to focus on.

Now all the crybabies are going to complain and get the media to ask about it relentlessly until they cave in, like what happened with Bo, so can we just stop with complaining about the non important little stuff?

Let's let them focus on winning games as a team without the distractions.

Yes, none of that stuff is important.

I'd be fine with a white helmet and a red stripe.. cool beans

I guess “ long standing” Is a relative term 🤣🤣 When I first started going to home games from the late 70s through the early 90s I don’t remember tunnel walks or blackshirts.

I moved away 93-94 and back in ‘98 (yes, I missed all those title runs). Blackshirts are what the 1st team starters used to wear at practice and I don’t remember people talking about them all that much.

I think most of the traditions we know now started in the mid-90s. I think Callahan was the coach when they turned it into a hand out thing.

When the blackshirts were first introduced the players had to earn then every week, so if you played like crap against Kansas you di have it for the next game

Maybe a booster can buy some jerseys at a greatly reduced price and give it to the players as part of a behind the scenes NIL deal. Winking

I just listened to Bill Busch talk tonight at a Husker dinner. Dude is cool as ****. He was asked about the Blackshirts. He wasn't happy how this is going down, but said he understood why they can't just hand them out and take them away this season. He was 100% keeping the tradition, and said all the players ain't being crybabies about it. I was a little disappointed when he said that because as a purist who has watched the Huskers for over forty years, I was hoping the players feel a little hurt they don't have Blackshirts. He seems to be a great guy to be in charge of these guys though. Dude has some great history and had some great recruiting stories. I would not be surprised to see these guys turns things around this year.

Exactly. That is the tradition. We've just made it more because we started calling them that. Then there's the 90's dynasty that redefined us on offense and defense. Waited all those years and then we dominated like no one has ever done. So, blackshirts becomes part of the lexicon of the college game. When really all the tradition ever was, was to award someone with the starting position on defense. They wore black jerseys in practice. Because they were the starters. That was our tradition.

Those starters deserved them every year because they were a top 30 defense just about every year.

Deserved is not the tradition. The tradition is we gave the starters the black jerseys. You didn't win it for play. You got it because you were named the starter. That was it. All this other stuff is attributed to it because we were so good in the 90's. The blackshirts doesn't mean that you were the baddest defense around. It just became the mean that. It's a stupid motivational tool to withhold them. How about coach them up? What good does withholding the black practice jerseys do? Does our D suddenly play with super powers? Nope.

Traditions change. Especially when circumstances change. The only reason the blackshirts became a tradition anybody cared about is because our defenses were consistently very good over a long period of time. They're not living up to a blackshirt standard, so they're taken away. I see no real problem with that.

Well I do have a problem with that. It's not tradition and it's not effective. Duh.
