Mickey should Frost fail

Coordinating an offense or defense has little to do with being a head coach, unless you're hired because you're viewed as an exceptional play caller, i.e. Frost 2018, which obviously doesn't always work out as there are too many other responsibilities for a head coach.

There are generally two elements of coaching: scheming and leading. Leading is more important for a HC. Scheming is more important for a coordinator. To be a great HC you don't have to be able to sit down and devise the perfect scheme to beat a defense. And when it comes to leading, Mickey seems to be the real deal.

Coordinators happen to be the most common hires for HC, but that's because they're in the best position to make themselves known as candidates. An AD is going to have a hard time finding a position coach somewhere who's perfect for their HC job because there are simply too many position coaches out there. But when one falls into your lap, you don't turn him down just because he's never been a coordinator.

Now if Trev has seen evidence that Mickey isn't organized enough or maybe for some reason he believes Mickey is better suited to lead a group of 10 position players rather than a full 150 player team, then great... I trust Trev. But if he sees it in Mickey, for the love of god I hope people don't throw a fit because he's never been a coordinator.
I wouldn't care if Mickey's title was Recruiting Coordinator. NU is likely gonna get a lot of bang for its buck.

Mickey isn't kicking around down in Louisiana and Georgia for nothing.
Surely he has a long list of kids that he was looking at while at his last school. In some cases, LSU was recruiting some different type players to play SEC level competition.

In a perfect world, between Scott, Whipple and Mickey there is more than enough brain power to put an effective scheme in place.

NU is "only" 2 outstanding OL, and 2 outstanding DL/Rush End types to have an outstanding team, probably capable of winning the West this year. Of course, needing and then being able to ADD those 4 players is easier said than done.

I think, even right now, this overall team has about 75% of the needed player types to have a chance to be pretty good. I'm hoping there's a mad rush between now and the final makeup of the team in the fall to add 1-2-3-4 more really outstanding, proven pieces to what is already available.

It seems to me the competition just to win the QB spot is gonna be pretty interesting. This will be the first time in 5 years where there will actually be a legitimate contest to win the job.

At least Joseph understands the importance of recruiting. I’m not sure that Frost did when he started here.
Please. Have you taken time to look at the Husker offer list the last 4 years.

Where do people come up with this stuff?

It seems like NU and maybe TN were the two schools that made the most offers of any Power 5 teams.

I bet a condensed version of the kids that you'd like to have and possibly be able to get is likely the way to go. Direct mail isn't.

I bet NU offered more scholarships to injured players than almost any other college team around. NU has specialized in kids like AM who was injured as a High School JR and set out his SR year. The Thompkins kid coming off of multiple knee injuries. And other rehab scholarships.

Sure they are great stories if they work out, but overall, those kids have been a bust. It's great to give kids a chance, but the object is to win football games not a free education with no return on investment.

I forgot to include, the MJ has a pretty suspect resume up to this point as well besides his few years at LSU.

He certainly doesn't have a P5 head coaching resume at this point thats for damn sure.

If he was any other asset coach without NU ties, u wouldn't be talking about him as a HC at all as a possible replacement t for Frost

Please. Offer lists don't mean anything.
You said Frost didn't see the importance of recruiting. Do you seriously believe he doesn't see that or believe it? There isn't a coach out there at any level that believes that.

You hire people, not resumes. Resumes are to help you hire someone you know nothing about. If Trev gets to know Mickey and decides he has what it takes (assuming Frost doesn’t work out), he should pull the trigger. Resume be dammed.

And that’s correct, I’d have no idea who he is if he didn’t have NU ties… which is my entire point. Hardly anybody else knows who he is right now, which means he’s our little secret. Perfect.

It’s the only way Nebraska will ever hire a great coach. If you want Resume Guy, we’re gonna end up with a resume that was passed up by a handful of better schools.

He didn't take it seriously enough by making sure that he had great recruiters on his staff. In fact, he said when he was hired that he didn't need an ace recruiter. You can make all the offers in the world, but it doesn't mean anything if you can't actually convince them to come.

Yeah our our "people" with the light resumes that Frost hired from UCF..

Sure have done well at at NU huh?

U need to have both, and MJ is severely lacking in the resume part.

My point is why not get both? Or better hires than MJ?

There were lots of things SF failed at, and part of it was cuz he was light in his resume,, and coaches he hired that were light in resumes.

Let's not try and re invent the wheel like SF tried to do here, as it has been a miserable failure.

Not if Thompson is just anointed and nobody else gets a legitimate chance to compete or gets snaps if Thompson is laying an egg during games or is injured. If that happens it will be just like the last 4 years.

I answered that in every post I’ve made in this thread. “Proven” guys that come here are not going to be good. The better schools scoop them up. You have to take risks at Nebraska.

You use Frost as an example of hiring guys without good resumes. How about Riley or Diaco or Eli Manning’s QB coach as examples of guys with resumes who failed?

Most coaches fail because by definition most coaches are average, but schools are always seeking to be better than average. That means we can always find examples of failed coaches to prove a point, so it’s a worthless endeavor.

Thompson, with his past hand injury, is only 1 hit to the helmet of a charging linemen and someone else is actually available.

Other than the returning "starters" except Benhart who is likely to get beat out, the anointed starter will be Trey Palmer. He didn't follow Mickey up here to ride the pine, likely neither did Decoldest.

Frost is sitting on a powder keg. He knows NU has to win. This sub .500 crap is not going to help him keep that job. If Thompson is failing to do an adequate job at QB, I expect Chubba will be ready, and off course Logan.

Thompson is at least 10x the qb AM was. I'm not worried about it honestly.

Look, I am not defending Frost, he has shown us all plenty of warts in just about every aspect of his tenure at Nebraska.

He asked for and was given more funds for recruiting including access to private jets. Here the stats I could quickly find on spending for football recruiting. Georgia was #1

11. University of Nebraska

  • Recruiting expenses for all sports: $2,545,583
  • Recruiting expenses for football in 2018: $1,250,674
  • Percentage of total recruiting expenses spent on football: 49.13%

1. University of Georgia

  • Recruiting expenses for all sports: $3,990,422
  • Recruiting expenses for football in 2018: $2,626,622
  • Percentage of total recruiting expenses spent on football: 65.82%
I believe, much like Solich apparently thought, getting good players to Lincoln wouldn't be that difficult. He was consistently in the top 20 aside from the first year and this year although it is a strange year to evaluate. For what has been a perineal losing program the past few years, that probably isn't terrible.

Further, Frost isn't an idiot, he knows he has to have better talent, thus the comment (not sure who made it) about telling current players their job was to recruit someone better than them. He knows that as well, he didn't just fall off the turnip truck.

I believe where he has come up short is on the field in developing talent and obviously winning games. One could easily state that Frost has actually over recruited his record and talent development. According to your standard, it all boils down to him "convincing" and 18 year old kid to come to Nebraska why? Answer the why.

I was listening to Sharp and Benning the other day. They were talking about Mickey. They made a comment that "if Frost doesn't save his job this year, Mickey will still be here". Does that mean Mickey is the heir apparent as HC?
Knowing the dumbass incompetence in our AD, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the plan.
