You're confusing Smothers' ugly throwing motion with an inability to throw. The kid did a nice job delivering balls accurately and on time to receivers against Iowa. Yeah he doesn't have a rocket arm but IF Adrian would have had Smothers' ability to find an open guy and get him the ball he would have at least doubled the number of games he won at NU.
And where did he make his throws? How many over the middle? He is clearly not comfortable back there. Not all pass completions are the same degree of difficulty. Clearly, they were protecting him, not wanting him to go over the middle, i.e. check downs to the back in the flat, out patterns, etc.

Half his throws were wobbly ducks. He will be with a new team in April

I don't think so, mainly because I don't see us getting a transfer QB who will definitely take his place. Over the last 12 hours a number of individuals following the Slovis situation say Pitt is his likely choice.
Who does that leave us with who is definitely an upgrade? Casey Thompson is the only available QB I can think of that would be. We're running out of options.
Smothers threw the ball fairly well against Iowa for his first start ever. Give him spring and fall camp with the first team, and some better QB coaching, and he may surprise some of his doubters.
We'll see.

I don't care if a QB shotputs the ball as long as he gets it to the right guy at the right moment in a place where he can catch the ball. He had one miscue where the WR broke off his route and that wasn't probably Smothers' fault. The kid started 7/8 passing and had us in position to win the game. Good first start for him. I like how he got the ball out accurately. I know his throwing motion is ugly but the ball goes where it is supposed to.

I'll let Whipple make the call. I would say that he's a lot more qualified than you or me. I'm a lot more confident in his ability to identify his starter and coach him up than Mario was.

You are completely over rating Smothers. It’s the exact game plan NU used for McCaffreys first start. Now everybody’s seen his inability to throw they will adjust and expose his weakness. He will not be successful in the B1G 10 and Frost knows it. They literally told him to throw it to the first read or run it.

And you don't think Iowa was expecting that. What Iowa hadn't counted on was his ability to run outside speed options. Once they adjusted to that it slowed us down but he was still effective in the passing game. I don't care how big of an arm you have if you can't first FIND the open guy, then deliver an accurate and on time throw. He did a good job of that. Whipple has a history of having made some guys who were too short with with below average arms look very good.

I'm not lobbying for Smothers. I just don't think people adequately appreciate what Smothers was able to do in his first start against a pretty good Iowa defense. IF he's the guy Whipple picks so be it. You can not overestimate the value of having a QB with a high football IQ.

Iowa's D was ranked 16th in total D. Kid completed 72% of his passes against them. Whether or not anyone lobbies for the kid, he's a legit competitor for the job.

He gets a clean slate like everyone else on offense according to Whipple.

Given the OC's passing background, I would think he is going to see more potential in H2 in the short term. Torres is coming off injury and won't really be ready to compete for the job.

Publicly Frost has stated how much he likes Logan, so will be interesting to see who makes the final call.

The way Frost marries the QB, it's almost like a bad addiction if he chooses poorly. The entire program pays for it, for years.
