Trev just did what the administration wanted.. to reduce that contract buyout.. (in my opinion)

They will get some ppl in those positions, probably pay them okay, but it will be the same problems as before.

Trev is a snake, but this will appease the dumb dumbs for now.

What is more uncertain to me, is how the players will react.

I think we will see a massive exodus of players out of the program on the offensive side, and it will further hurt the program.
Honest question here NS. What would have been the correct move in your opinion? I personally think that Alberts was a bit handcuffed by the size of the buyout @$20M. I believe there were only a few option.

1.) Retain SF and staff as it was. This puts the team in a 'lame duck' status with fans disgruntled, recruits knowing the staff is probably on the way out. Portal is still potentially an issue with players seeing writing on the wall.

2.) Do nothing until the end of the season then keep SF and change the Asst coaches. Essentially that is the same as this made decision with the continued uncertainty for recruiting through the early signing period. Same portal transfer issue occurs.

3.) Fire SF immediately(staff obviously gone also). Coaching turnover -again- with a lost recruiting year -again-(might be lost anyway looking at commits). We have seen that movie a few times. Transfer portal issues rinse, repeat.

4.) Fire SF & staff at the end of the season. See #3 with a slower timeframe for the next coach to catch up and recruits get a waiver to decommit anyway. Transfer portal still a problem.

Maybe there is a better choice that I am not thinking of. I don't love this solution by any stretch and don't know that SF will be the answer but at this point, every choice is a bad one in my opinion. The restructuring sure does make it easier to change Frost next year if it comes to that.

As far as the assistants, I hate to see anyone lose a job, but O-Line and QB have been obvious lack of development/improvement. Lubick, I honestly don't know if he was a problem. Held, I actually would say the O-Line issues probably made the RB group look worse than it is.

Your recruiting sucks its better to move on now. Most guys won't commit knowing if you don't do something good next year he's gone and other schools will remind them of that. And if he does get canned your really set back in recruiting.

Frank Solich at Nebraska. We went from 7-7 to 10-3 the next season. Bo came in and had the defense rolling!
They fired him after that year though. He went 12-1 his second season after going 9-4 his first. I really believe Solich could have had a Ferentz type tenure. Not many Husker fans would have taken that after what preceded him.

I agree. I think Frank's career at NU could have been like Barry's at Wisconsin who patterned his program off of old school Nebraska. That probably wouldn't have met our expectations back then though.

Should hire Tom Herman to be OC, he has a history of recruiting Texas and has had success in the Big Ten.
If we got Tom Herman to be our OC, you'd have to call Stanley Steamer to clean all the **** outta my carpet and upholsteries.

I've stated what I think should have been done, many times.

The staff are not the problem, in fact they have just been made scapegoats for the way Scott runs his program.

The first couple of years, Frost didn't recruit any offensive linemen.. but recruited lots of injured running backs.. he brought some d linemen over to the offensive side, recruited a wide out here and there, that then left, along with running off good throwing qb's, while he recruited running qb's, and then he starts recruiting big linemen all of a sudden, at the expense of athletic ability.. and then gets a bunch of nice receivers.. it's been all over the map.

Even a high school coach will tell you that they usually only play upperclassmen, and it's the same way in college. There is no excuse for having Freshman lineman playing in year 4.

This is not Austin's fault, it's Frost and the way he handles the roster and constant tinkering with everything, including being too subjective about the personnel getting the playing time.

Frost is the one who is running the offense, tinkering with it, not the OC or any of the offensive staff.. they just run the kids through drills.

So in my opinion, the staff were not at fault, the player and roster management by Frost was and still is the problem.

I would have promoted Chins to the interim head coach spot during the first bye week, and just fired Frost. At least Chins can execute his responsibilities. It would have been worth seeing how he did with 4 games left (and no worry of burning redshirts) to finish out the season. He could have played anyone he wanted to give us a look of what things might look like next year.

To me, that would have been the easiest move and least disruptive.

Now the entire offense, has to learn new coaches, who may not really understand what Scott wants anyway, and they lost their position coaches. How do you think they feel about that?

Do you think players will be searching for the portal after this? I do.

The admin still then had the ability to hire someone outside, if they thought Chins didn't handle things well, but I thought it was the best scenario.

Like you said, this recruiting class is already a lame duck, so getting someone in new, would have allowed a positive light on things. Now the class will be small, and we are going to lose players. How's that look for next year?

How many assistants are looking to come work for Frost who will most likely get fired next year? I guess if you're desperate for a job, they will send in their resumes, but I don't think we will be getting better staff than what we had.

For the Administration, they got the buyout reduced, that is about it. They looked at it from a financial standpoint, but they might be further damaging the program.. with the B1G grant money, they probably don't give F about football anymore anyways.

Aww, all the arm chair bro-xperts wanna bees with a source saying he was done and looking forward to the every 4 year coach name dropping circle jerk were wrong and now look as dumb as their dum *** predictions.
I didnt predict frost would be gone, but certainly wanted him gone. He has done a bad job and it would be very fair for him to be fired. As for predictions, nobody would have been dumb to predict he was fired. Literally every coach outside of vandy would be fired with his resume. Lovie Smith is the only one who survived 4 straight losing seasons in the big 10 since we entered the conference and he at least made a bowl and got to 6 wins in year 4. Like lovie, frost will be fired after year 5.

In checking the roster, this is what the OL looks like:

Freshmen 8 Redshirt Freshmen 7 Total of 15

Sophomores 3 Total of 3

Juniors 3 Total of 3

21 kids are offensive linemen.

That's what an offensive line that gets pushed around looks like.

Ty for illustrating my point. That is an example of the roster mismanagement I speak of.

The same thing happens every year with other schools firing coaches, it's not going to get any better. Yeah being stupid and fiscally conservative in an industry that's all about blowing tons of cash, it's going to be hard to compete with those schools for top quality coaching talent. Pay them a salary that's at or above their market rate, I'm sure we'd have no problem attracting quality candidates. Well I was sure of it... Hard to tell now what happens depending on how much talent leaves the program and how much stays. Oh yeah, also there's no way in hell we're getting Tom Herman as OC.

I'm still pissed about him whacking Uncle Milty. He was the best O line coach in CFB history.
Very true but in all honesty it was time. And I m a huge milt fan and have had the pleasure of tossing down a couple with back in the day. Very interesting technique man.

Anyway uncle milt was writing books and doing clinics and teaching other college and university coaches how to coach linemen. He really didn't enjoy going on recruiting trips much in his last years. Dan Young was good to but it was getting time for younger blood

Look at programs like Texas, Miami, USC, Florida State, Tennessee, Michigan, and Nebraska as programs that are all considered annual underachievers. Heck Notre Dame hasn't won anything of note since the 80's. Alabama, and Ohio State had long stretches of seasons that ended up as average. It's tough to impossible to have a run like Saban has had. LSU was considered the greatest team ever(in some circles) just two years ago. Now they are back to mediocrity.

The key difference is most of those programs have a strong backyard of talent to recruit. Texas, Florida, California, and Ohio produce several top prospects. Nebraska was able to poach talent from Texas, while having a huge advantage in strength training along with preferred walkons. Today athletes are all in great weight training regiments.

I think looking at Wisconsin is a great model to winning in the B1G. Nebraska can possibly be better due to slightly better recruiting classes. Mix in what Michigan State is doing in the transfer portal( Burrow anyone?) , and you may be able to offset the built in advantages Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State have in the B1G. The West division is a much easier hill to climb. Northwestern has done it twice.

I lean on the side of agreeing with you. This offense is Scott's offense. Changing coaches doesn't change the problems that are due to the scheme, which is top down. However, the story of Austin being an NFL style OL coach and needing outside help to fix simple things like Jurgens snapping... is bad. He needed to go either way. Still doesn't change the scheme problem. Firing the rest of the O coaches besides Beckton does lend itself to the thought that maybe SF is thinking about changing up the offense next year, or at least make critical adjustments to the base.

I've been stupid enough to be gullible about being hopeful with this team so far, I'll wait until the first few games next year to decide if this was a ****** move or not. It's happening either way and this year is lost so may as well not be upset over something we can't control. If the first few games they come out and it's basically the same offense then we'll know this is just smoke and mirrors and the next couple years are already down the drain. If they come out and it is fundamentally different then we can at least know they tried to fix the problems, whether it works out or not

Well, your post sure makes good sense to me. Also, our OLine and special team "both" so very, VERY desperately need help. I wish I had an answer for that.

Most years dont have that many good job openings. I think Nebraska could get Herman because he has a bad name right now, he was the source for the media hit jobs on the Urban Meyer/ Zac Smith stuff.
