16 year old collapses at Omaha South during practice and passes away. Very sad. RIP young man. If someone knows how to post an article it would be appreciated.

Even though it was hot out yesterday it said they were only practicing for 10 minutes when it happened. Have to guess it was something to do with an enlarged heart?

I always worried about this as a school administrator. I feel very sorry for the family.

Kids are notorious for not keeping themselves hydrated. One year, the calendar was where we started practices before school started and it was hot. When school started up I had 5 gallon jugs of sports drinks stationed all over school for the kids.

Very sad. No bad signs at all from the coaching staff and practice itself, as it had just started.

South has less than 40 kids out for football, with a school population of close to 2,900.

OPS **** the bed last year by not allowing the fall sports to go on. This player was nearly 400 lbs, didn't help that he was unable to play last year...

Those numbers also brings up the unintended consequences of having magnet schools and open enrollment. I know that South High is in a predominantly Hispanic area and probably not a whole lot of football players anyway, but some could very well be playing for other schools instead of South.

Saw South practicing two seasons ago...about 25 kids were on the field, some wearing T-shirts over their pads and a few in jeans. I was in shock.

Still the practice (from what I saw) was pretty solid, the coaches were doing what they could.

I have not seen them play a varsity game in awhile but I would imagine they are usually getting beat up.

Open enrollment is a disaster and has done a great job ruining OPS in a lot of different ways. One of those things that sort of seemed like a good idea but ended up sucking.

I did two a days fall camp at Collins Field and it was brutal. Since it is in a sunken bowl of sorts there was no breeze and they watered the grass in the early morning and it was humid. We were in full pads. Plus, those were the days the coaches thought drinking water caused cramps, so we'd go for an hour and a half before taking a water break. Looking back I'm surprised more kids didn't get heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or die.

400? That is very serious. How does a doctor sign that physical? Did the kid have any exercise regimen prior to start of practice? A lot of unknowns, but putting him out there does not seem to be in his best interest.

The father said the hospital informed him the kid had a temperature of 122 degrees at the hospital. Any medical professionals on here? That sounds crazy. Does the body just go into hyperdrive much like when someone has excited delirium?

That is such a good practice...those of us who are old probably were incredibly fortunate to survive in the old school practices of "NO WATER!!!"

When my son played baseball and one of our games was at South...they had maybe 12 kids on the team? Not a single legit baseball player on the whole squad. Nobody could throw a strike to save their life....one of the weirdest games I ever watched. Felt to me like it's soccer, and everything else a very distant second.

It is a good practice to offer water and kids should drink it when they are thirsty...but it is very hard to catch up on your hydration once the workout starts. If a kid is dehydrated prior to practice, it is hard to catch up on that hydration during practice.

I had a personal trainer tell me that our body could only process 4 to 6 oz. of water an hour once you started your workout.

These practices in the heat are very important as well. Heat acclimation is a real thing. These kids have to get used to this heat and playing in it as games will very rarely if ever be canceled due to the heat. They will take extra water breaks during games.

I know this coach personally and have coached with him for a few years prior to him going to South. He loves these kids and would never hurt one of his players or students.

@WHCSC This practice was only 10 minutes in and they were having a water break. How many teams in this area (or outside of our area) canceled practice due to the heat?

Yep. Such a sad deal, but I remember when I was in high school the big boys always had a lot rougher time during the heat. Not trying to say anything bad about the kid at all, but 389 in high school is not a healthy weight whatsoever.

Remember this happening my senior year of high school to a friend on an opposing team. Quick thinking by the medical staff saved his life using a helicopter blades to cool him.. Central had the only Astroturf practice field at the time behind the school on concrete (was like practicing on the parking lot). Thankfully he returned to play by the end of the season.

Helicopter draft used to cool heat stroke victim

I wasn't saying anyone should be charged, but I'd be surprised if someone wasn't either charged or at least sued. We love to blame.
