Those numbers also brings up the unintended consequences of having magnet schools and open enrollment. I know that South High is in a predominantly Hispanic area and probably not a whole lot of football players anyway, but some could very well be playing for other schools instead of South.Very sad. No bad signs at all from the coaching staff and practice itself, as it had just started.
South has less than 40 kids out for football, with a school population of close to 2,900.
OPS **** the bed last year by not allowing the fall sports to go on. This player was nearly 400 lbs, didn't help that he was unable to play last year...
Saw South practicing two seasons ago...about 25 kids were on the field, some wearing T-shirts over their pads and a few in jeans. I was in shock.Very sad. No bad signs at all from the coaching staff and practice itself, as it had just started.

Open enrollment is a disaster and has done a great job ruining OPS in a lot of different ways. One of those things that sort of seemed like a good idea but ended up sucking. Those numbers also brings up the unintended consequences of having magnet schools and open enrollment. Charges for what? Dumbest comment of the week. The kid weighed 389 pounds for crying out loud. Charge the parents maybe.Charges coming?
400? That is very serious. How does a doctor sign that physical? Did the kid have any exercise regimen prior to start of practice? A lot of unknowns, but putting him out there does not seem to be in his best interest.Very sad. No bad signs at all from the coaching staff and practice itself, as it had just started.

That is such a good practice...those of us who are old probably were incredibly fortunate to survive in the old school practices of "NO WATER!!!"I always worried about this as a school administrator. I feel very sorry for the family.
Kids are notorious for not keeping themselves hydrated. One year, the calendar was where we started practices before school started and it was hot. When school started up I had 5 gallon jugs of sports drinks stationed all over school for the kids.
We'll seeCharges for what? Dumbest comment of the week. The kid weighed 389 pounds for crying out loud. Charge the parents maybe.
It is a good practice to offer water and kids should drink it when they are thirsty...but it is very hard to catch up on your hydration once the workout starts. If a kid is dehydrated prior to practice, it is hard to catch up on that hydration during practice. That is such a good practice...those of us who are old probably were incredibly fortunate to survive in the old school practices of "NO WATER!!!"
agree. we tell our scouts that hydrating for summer camp starts the Monday before. They go on Sunday. It is a good practice to offer water and kids should drink it when they are thirsty...but it is very hard to catch up on your hydration once the workout starts. I had a personal trainer tell me that our body could only process 4 to 6 oz. of water an hour once you started your workout.
Yep. Such a sad deal, but I remember when I was in high school the big boys always had a lot rougher time during the heat. Not trying to say anything bad about the kid at all, but 389 in high school is not a healthy weight whatsoever. These practices in the heat are very important as well. Heat acclimation is a real thing. These kids have to get used to this heat and playing in it as games will very rarely if ever be canceled due to the heat. They will take extra water breaks during games.
I know this coach personally and have coached with him for a few years prior to him going to South. He loves these kids and would never hurt one of his players or students.
@WHCSC This practice was only 10 minutes in and they were having a water break. How many teams in this area (or outside of our area) canceled practice due to the heat?
It says he was 389 pounds though...Even though it was hot out yesterday it said they were only practicing for 10 minutes when it happened. Have to guess it was something to do with an enlarged heart?
I wasn't saying anyone should be charged, but I'd be surprised if someone wasn't either charged or at least sued. We love to blame. These practices in the heat are very important as well.
