It will be interesting to see if they work to adjust their footwork philosophy as our young linemen get a bit bigger and stronger, especially our young tackles. It certainly could help get a better push in the run game. Right now it’s more place and seal rather than hit and drive. Be interested in thoughts from those who know a lot more about line play than I.
For me there are consistent technique issues.
They often get a good initial strike but then sit back instead of driving the guy back.
They will engage a guy and the RB will cut off the blockers hip, either side, and the D player slides off to make the play or we get called for holding him. All they have to do is take a step and show their numbers (turn their back) to the RB/hole to seal the guy off. Watch Wisconsin linemen, they are masters at this.
Our tackles tend to let the rush guys come up field too far before making contact. By this time they have a good head of steam and are harder to control. Take a step back but make contact.ans control the guy sooner.
When we have a D lineman on our guys outside shoulder we tend to reach with our arms instead moving our feet. This is why we get so many holding calls, we reach. Very frustrating..
Lastly, we are terrible about picking up guys on a outside zone or toss sweep. Usually the guard or whoever is pulling generally has the first color (D player) to the inside or if he is not there look to the outside. We wiff a lot, a whole lot.
