Well we play 4 ranked teams in 10 games. 4 OSU, 4 UC Riverside and 1 Texas Tech 1 Mississippi St. That's actually pretty brutal stretch that will most definitely shake out the cobwebs out and break in the youngsters.

2-9 start. Don't forget Sam Houston St, plenty of NCAA appearances.

Because it's baseball, maybe a 4-7 start but I doubt it. Way to brutalize this sparkling freshman class, coach.

I like the freshmen pitchers coming in.
I do think he's recruiting pretty well right now. We'll see if it shows up in the W column. I love to listen to and watch Husker baseball. Frankly I like having Erstad as our coach and it would take a horrible misstep by him to ever make me turn on him.

On one hand, they won a Big 10 trophy. On the other hand, scholarship-free Yale and Holy Cross put a beatdown on them in the regional and made it look like a fluke.
heaven knows no good baseball player would ever go to an Ivy league school over taking a D-1 baseball scholarship...... You're right though. That was bad.

It's rough for the boys to be stuck indoors all winter and hit the field against a team that's outside all the time. But that's just the way it is!

I listen to almost every game on the radio, even if it’s on TV. Just something nostalgic about listening to baseball on the radio and tinkering around in the garage that I look forward to every spring!

I almost enjoy listening to Husker sports as much on the radio as watching them on TV. It certainly helps the day slip by when I'm working.

The big ten is at best a mid major baseball conference and I’m not sure it is a high mid major. There have been only 2 big ten teams reach reach the college World Series (final 8) in the last 34 years - only 2. How would you rate a basketball conference that had the same record of sending teams to the elite 8.

It is time the big starts asking for appearance fees when we play major conf teams on the road much like we payed Bethune Cook or
Troy in football.

Not much of a surprise, but we got swept by Oregon State
Didn't have high expectations going into that series - maybe hoping just to steal one game. But dropping the series by a collective 38-9 is a worse drubbing than one would hope for.

Doesn't get any easier, as Texas Tech is the preseason Big 12 favorite and Baylor was projected to be 2nd.

Erstad already questioning if the guys are scared. Rinse & repeat

The guy uses the same lines each and every single year. I would hope at some point he comes to the realization it’s him.

He did say he would fire himself. So we have that going for us. But that is probably just more BS coming out of his mouth.

We are expecting way too much from a program in a low level baseball conference. Think buffalo or Kent state in basketball and football and that is what big ten programs are. Occasionally you might have a decent year and make a historic run - but the baseline is low quality baseball compared to the major conferences

Which is probably why NU should never finish 10th out of 13 teams and miss the conference tournament.

Fair point ... but maybe we should be finishing in the bottom half. Personally I think in a conference where being conf champions is meaningless on a national stage, the baseball budget should be in the lowest 25% with the saved funds diverted to programs where the BIG is competitive.

The athletic department saves money if we aren’t in the conf tourney or a mere bracket filler in the NCAA tourney

The talent disparity was obvious between the Beavers & the Huskers

Two years ago he won a conference title.

Whooo a conference baseball title in the 9th strongest conference in baseball. Its sad when we hang our hat on 1 big ten conference championship when we had 3 CWS appearances in one of the stronger baseball conferences. That thought process makes zero sense. Its all about coaching amd Erstad isnt very good at it. But since he is a former Husker we are all supposed to bow down to his greatness. Why cant a pro team come steal him from us.

I have been told that it is way to early to get down on the team. After all it is cold here in Neb and they have been unable to practice outside. Of course we are not supposed to realize that weather has not been great in Corvallis Oregon either but forget that fact right? The Huskers were sort of competitive in one of those four games with O-State. We have not seen improvements in the way these teams play now for seven years. And if it is the assts fault who is responsible for hiring and keeping them teaching what needs to be taught? Needless to say I have a problem with the baseball team and how they have played the last few years. Something needs to change. There I said it!

You are now recruiting kids to play in a low mid major conference versus a top conference (Big12). That’s why you don’t see Michigan and Ohio State losing football recruits to the MAC. High level recruits aren’t going to sign up to play big ten baseball. Baseball died when we joined the big ten. Cut the budget to the minimum required by the conference and upgrade in other areas where the conference isn’t considered minor league.

I say it all the time but we signed our death wish when we hired Mike Anderson instead of Rob Childress. The move to the B1G was the final nail in the coffin. Stop caring about Husker baseball. It's dead, gone, and buried it's just easier this way.

loser mentalities always lose.

So you are saying the reason those Summit league teams don’t make deep runs in the NCAA basketball tournament every year is because they just don’t believe strong enough

In the last 34 years there have been 272 college World Series births ... the big ten has filled 2 of them. That is far less than 1%

Perhaps every Nebraska baseball thread and comment forever and until the end of time could start with a disclaimer. Some examples:

Assuming we're not going to dismantle the baseball program and strip it down to the bare minimum, it sure would be nice to make the conference tournament since it's in Omaha and not being in the field will cut attendance by about 80 percent.

or

Assuming we're not going to tear down Haymarket Park and replace it with a women's lacrosse facility, I wish we would bunt less.

Nebraska has signed multiple top 25 recruiting classes under Erstad. That’s fine if you think Nebraska can’t or shouldnt compete with the rest of the nation. Let’s start with the Big Ten. Where Erstad has one 1 piece of hardware out of 14.

2018 - 37th
2017 - outside top 100
2016 - 75th
2015 - outside top 100
2014 - 25th
2013 - 28th
2012 - outside top 100

The lack of success in the Big 10 tournament (on top of not qualifying last year) is of concern. At this point, I see nothing to suggest that the successful runs in 2013 and 2014's tournaments weren't largely on Will Bolt having an actually coherent method of teaching an approach to hitting that works. Obviously there was some good pitching in there, too, but Silva also shoulders some responsibility for the rash of pitcher injuries that finally prompted a change in off-season programs :/

Nebraska doesn't need to spend a ton of money to step up its game in B1G play.

College baseball is ahead of the professional game when it comes to using technology to make players better. I don't really know, but my guess is erstad is too old school to adapt to what's going on in the game. Do we have and are we effectively using trackman, rapsodo, and all the other tools necessary to be compete?

I am not adverse to competing in the BIG - I believe that can still happen on a bare bones budget. What I have difficulty with is the program criticism when we aren’t making runs in the NCAA tourney. Only 2 teams from the BIG have made any noise in the baseball tourney in more than 3 decades. It is analogous to the Akron basketball coach being in hot water because Akron isn’t making deep runs in the basketball tourney.

I don’t begrudge anyone enjoying Husker baseball and I guess it isn’t too much to expect to compete against like competition. I just don’t think people have a good sense of where the BIG fits in the national collegiate baseball landscape. There is a tendency to project the status of the conference in football and basketball on the baseball program where in fact there is a huge gap in quality.

I realize it likely won’t happen but personally I would rather maximize funding to programs where a big championship puts you on a national footing and minimize funding in sports where the BIg doesn’t compete at a national level other than maybe having a chance at a being a Cinderella team
