I am not adverse to competing in the BIG - I believe that can still happen on a bare bones budget. What I have difficulty with is the program criticism when we aren’t making runs in the NCAA tourney. Only 2 teams from the BIG have made any noise in the baseball tourney in more than 3 decades. It is analogous to the Akron basketball coach being in hot water because Akron isn’t making deep runs in the basketball tourney.

I don’t begrudge anyone enjoying Husker baseball and I guess it isn’t too much to expect to compete against like competition. I just don’t think people have a good sense of where the BIG fits in the national collegiate baseball landscape. There is a tendency to project the status of the conference in football and basketball on the baseball program where in fact there is a huge gap in quality.

I realize it likely won’t happen but personally I would rather maximize funding to programs where a big championship puts you on a national footing and minimize funding in sports where the BIg doesn’t compete at a national level other than maybe having a chance at a being a Cinderella team

3 teams have made it.

And the quality is much better now than before Nebraska joined. It’s possible to host of super regional/regional. And it’s been a multi bid league. It will never be the Big 12 but Nebraska baseball should be better than it had been under Erstad. And that doesn’t have to mean making the CWS.

If you do not see the difference in expecting a team to be competitive in regionals they host vs making it to the CWS there is no reason to try to have a conversation about it !

the big has plenty of programs that compete nationally which should be an expectation - how would you characterize a conference that has only had 2 final 8 basketball teams in the last 34 years -

The big ten last won a national title in baseball in 1966

since 1966 the conference has won national titles in the following sports - combined mens and womens

cross country - 9
field hockey - 2
football - 5
soccer - 12
volleyball 14 - 9 women -
bowling - 2
fencing 14
softball 2
tennis 2
track and field 1
synch swimming 5
basketball 7
gymnastics 14
trampoline - 2
hockey 27
swimming - diving - 8
wrestling 35
golf 3
lacrosse 10
rowing 14

not to mention the multiple individual national titles in track, tennis, swimming, etc

invest in excellence and/or potential - as it sits it requires almost a miracle run to reach the final 8 in baseball - the history of even getting to the final 16 is very poor

If you think NU should drop baseball or de-fund the sport to the greatest possible degree, that's fine. I don't agree and still won't even if hear the spiel another 15 times, but it's not an unreasonable or unthinkable idea.

But please don't try to tell me that expecting NU to win one game in a regional that includes Oregon State, Yale and Holy Cross is overly optimistic. Going into that regional, most everyone here would have been thrilled to go 2-2 and finish second. Had NU gone 1-2 and finished 3rd, there would have been some grumbling but not that much. Getting bounced in two games and not even getting the face Oregon State was an embarrassment.

There is zero reason why Nebraska should ever finish below 4th in the B1G. Absolutely zero reason. It is unacceptable just like the football teams performance in the big 10 as of late.

We went to the CWS during our time in a major conference. We are now trying to recruit kids to play baseball in a minor conference. My point is that even if you win the BIG you still aren’t very good on a national level. Even though Nebraska is the same there is a huge difference trying to recruit kids to play at Nebraska in the BIG vs Nebraska in the big 12. It is similar to MAC schools trying to recruit football players against big ten schools.

No it’s not. Whether you go to a MAC school of Big Ten school in football you have a full ride. It’s not that way in baseball.

It’s why we can go into Texas and get a Bo Blessie. We may be able to offer a kid more scholarship money than say Oklahoma is. Obviously being a Northern school it will always be hard to be a consistent program at the national level. But, Nebraska has quite a bit of instate talent more so than any other sport. Nebraska’s goal should be to be the best Big Ten program each and every year. Start from there
