Unfortunately Wyoming is suffering some of the same fate as Colorado. Lots of Californians moving there to escape California then they're trying to do the same thing to WY that they did to CA. There are actually people living in Wyoming now commuting over 2 hours south to Denver to work EVERY freaking day. Unbelievable.

Yes Colorado and Nevada have been turned over to the Californian transplants and illegal aliens. Only a matter of time before the same thing happens to Arizona and Texas. Southwest is changing rapidly and I don't think it's for the better.

I'm not sure that anyone has ever compared Bozeman or Missoula to Kearney or Grand Island.
And the capital, Helena, is comparable to Fremont... The number of people, size of the business district, swimming pool, NAIA college,restaurant options, shopping options, proximity to river, lakes, golf courses. I bet no one has ever compared the beautiful town that I live in with Fremont besides me either.... I apologize if it seems inaccurate to you, but it makes sense to me.
haha, i'm moving back to florida in 2 days and staying over with family for a couple of weeks until my car arrives in the Jacksonville port. So I meant short layover in florida as a few weeks until I get the rest of my stuff and to find my next destination.
I've been travelling a lot the last couple of years. Spent 20 years in the same house in Omaha, so it's been a long time coming to not be tied down. I will tell you, when in a routine, everything goes by so fast. The last 2 years for me, has actually felt more like 5, since things are always changing.
Some really great ideas here.. spent some time looking at Chattanooga, TN as suggested.. I might like somewhere like that. It hasn't grown to the size where everything gets so pricey and they have gigabit internet infrastructure there. I guess it was one of the first places in the country to do that.
If you're really serious about the southwest, look at Payson, Arizona. I used to think Flagstaff was the best place in the state, but Payson has the same advantages and is better. It's only 75 miles northeast of Scottsdale but is over 7,000 feet higher in elevation. Gorgeous and great weather. And while some are putting down Wyoming, I disagree. Spend a lot of time there. Terrific state with fantastic tax advantages (just ask Governor Rickett's dad). I'd live in Laramie, Buffalo, Pinedale or Casper tomorrow if I could.
Not tax free, but I used to do a lot of traveling and hard to beat NC and SC. Charleston area, Wilmington and Charlotte are really nice. Asheville is very cool, but, VERY liberal, if that is a consideration. Conway is nice - right near Myrtle Beach and much less expensive. If you need tax-free, Tenn has some very nice areas.
I used to live in Albuquerque. Comparable to Omaha in size. Don't remember what the taxes were like but the weather was really great and skiing is close by.
Monopoly money to me, because I didn't have enough to ever consider buying something like I have here it so it wouldn't matter if it appreciated by a million.
Bend. I love it up there. Once outside of Portland Oregon is spectacular.
I'm glad I bought in Colorado when it was far more affordable, but I feel the same way about appreciation. I can only cash in if I want to leave the state and move somewhere that's cheaper, and I don't.
I would avoid Austin and Seattle due to the housing prices. You are going to trying to find a place during a high point of the bubble.

I have a real love-hate relationship with Austin.
Love the climate November through April, hate it from May through October. There are only two seasons, summer and summer lite.
Love the fact that you're four hours from Dallas, Houston, the Hill Country, or the ocean, but overall there are not great parks, camping areas, etc. nearby.
There are amazing restaurants, and tons of great things to do, but there are long lines and crowds.
Love all of the jobs and opportunity here, hate the traffic, traffic, and more traffic. Attitude of: "If you don't build it, they won't come."
Like the college town feel around UT, and the fact that nobody cares about UT athletics, but overall it is a terrible sports town.
It is amazing that you can get literally any good or service at the snap of a finger, but cost of living is high and getting higher.
Old Texans are generous, friendly people, but all the new tech implants from the coasts make mad money and are massive douches.
Home prices are highly correlated to the school ratings. However, prices go down the farther out you go from the city core. You can still find a nice house in Round Rock or Cedar Park (with great schools) for no more money than it would cost in Lincoln. Commute times are going to be a bear, though (I spend two hours a day in my car, and that is with an alternate work schedule to "beat" traffic).
If you have specific questions about Austin, let me know. You might also want to take a look at San Antonio. It doesn't get all the hype of Austin, but it has a lot of advantages as well. Better roads, and economy with a lot of federal workers, so it isn't as cyclical as Austin's tech industry.

Asheville is also very expensive.
Somewhat hidden gems are Chattanooga (previously mentioned) and Greenville, SC. Still affordable and access to mountains, outdoors, and nice climates.
Thanks. We are considering a move as well. Were looking at Raleigh, Charleston and a few others. Have heard good things about Chattanooga.
Fort Worth (northwest by Eagle Mountain Lake) is beautiful and close to all the fun stuff....
