If nothing else it should be exciting. Gotta admit if he breaks off a 50 or 60 yard td run the crowd will lose their minds. Will be interesting to see how this goes throughout the season. How much both get used and if it leads to another competition next year. I thought they'd go with Gebbia but if they thought both were equal I can see them going with the guy that might fit their system better as a whole.

That’s my guess to what happen and what Sean Callahan thought too. The comp was so close and went back and forth so much they went with the best fit. Like I said, Gebbia will get in there and he will get his shot to prove Frost he was the guy. Let’s see how this plays out ;)

From everything I have heard Martinez and Gebbia are very close. I hope TG gets a bunch of PT this year because we're going to need someone other than 2AM at some point.

GBR!

What does the "2" represent in 2AM? That he seals the deal at closing time?

Lol. Only one of those guys was a decent passer. Our DNA is running the ball b hind an elite line.

Well, we won a LOT of games with those marginal passers. But yeah, a vicious OLine is desperately needed. I hope we'll get that in a couple of years.

Ok, I have read many if these posts and all the reasons AM won the job. AM was a "better fit", has a higher ceiling, is a true dual threat etc. Unless the coaches are flat lieing, AM practiced bettee, graded higher and showed he manage this complicated offense. It's called completion. Everyone wants to look for intangibles or reasons that "they" think are important.

I think ultimately this is good news - neither QB has taken a snap in a game so they both would have growing pains - Martinez is the better runner and we will have to lean on running the football while the QB gets used to the speed of the game
Makes sense if the oline is worth a crap but that remains to be seen. The last fifteen years suggest running the football will be very challenging.

This really is a bit of a surprise. Thought it was going to be Gebbia. Anyone think Gebbia could be the guy for the year and Frost is using this as one of the 4 games for Martinez to get him live reps. Either way we have 2 very solid, start able Qbs if something should happen to other.

How many think gebbia will transfer at the end of the season? I think he could be a very good qb but with macaffery and the 2020 kid from Alabama coming is there writing on the wall for him?

Obviously, it depends on how the season pans out but if it goes with him getting a few snaps here and there and I was advising him, I was say look around. He stayed after Riley left, has given it everything he has and it may or may not work out. You are playing behind a true freshman in an O you didn't sign up for. What would you do for yourself and your career?

It's going to depend on how well AM does. If he does well this year and if it appears as though he takes a firm grasp of the job, then I think TG has to look around. TG is a talent, and I suspect he will stick around through at least Spring Ball next year.

Little lost how you think this is funny or a joke?? You really think very little of Gebbia eh?? Maybe dude worded things incorrectly but it could be possible. Maybe Frost went with Martinez thinking “ok, if he pans out and does great...then we made the right choice...but if he struggles and so on we can always switch to Gebbia and if Gebbia takes off running and does good, then we could still redshirt Martinez”. Or hell, vice versa. I love this 4 game rule now. Martinez won the battle for the first game and sounds like it was super close. Gebbia COULD very well play the 2nd or 3rd game. It is far from over with a Gebbia vs Martinez. This is only for game one.

Agreed, he will not go anywhere this season. So guys please, let’s respect Gebbia and knock of the transfer talk. From his side of things it seems rather disrespectful. The young man gave it everything he had and never wavered when Riley was fired and we brought in an offense that wasn’t supposed to fit him well.

Frost said he will name a starter and that starter will have a long leash. I’m a huge Gebbia fan, he plays for my favorite team. Martinez is the QB and will be unless injured. If Gebbia needs to come in I’ll have nothing but confidence in him until shown otherwise. I’d say this exact same thing had Gebbia been named the starter.

He also said both deserve to play and that will be considered. There’s a very could chance he gives both a shot. By no means is Gebbia not playing this year. The past month or so we all read and heard the same things. Both QBs will play and get snaps, regardless who gets named the starter.

Now I do agree, he won’t go back and forth in one game, more then likely. But that’s not saying he might go with Gebbia the next game. He just won’t switch them up during one game.

I don’t see our QB’s flip flopping from game to game unless it’s absolutely necessary to start Gebbia. Martinez is the starter, will be granted some room to grow and Gebbia will come in if needed or as a second stringer. If Martinez goes all Zac Lee in a game then I’d hope that Gebbia gets the call but short of certain cases we wouldn’t be doing outselves any favors by running with two QB’s.

Huh? So you are saying, AM gets the start this week and TG the next based on what? If they don't switch them during a game then starting is all that is left. Not happening this way.

Of course he won't leave now, but he has to consider his options in November/December.

I think a lot of people took that quote from coach out of context. He means that TG deserves to play, but he also isn't fond of a 2 QB system, so the battle, for now, is over. TG will get some mop up duty, and will be called in as a backup for situations that require it, but I would not interpret this as an ongoing QB battle.

Edit: Also wanted to add, that Gebbia also just became the fan favorite on the team for anything that goes wrong, they will be calling for TG to 'come in'. Smokin

Yep, he would be starter and many many other top schools. He isn't going to want to sit the bench. If he doesn't somehow win the job by year end. He will be gone.

Gebbia doesn't owe us anything. I would love it for him to stay, but that is a lot to ask to sit for 4 years. He has his own career to think about. I would fully support him if he transfers next year. Sure AM could fail or get hurt, but that is something no one wants and I would assume Gebbia doesn't either.

They're just stopgaps until Noah Vedral wins the job this spring. Then both Martinez and Gebbia will transfer... unless the Evil Genius Scott Frost tricks them into staying!
Vedral will not step foot on the field as a Nebraska qb starter. Not saying he isn't good, but he will probably always be the #3 guy while here.

The only two reasons to transfer after being at the program for two years is:

1. Be closer to family
2. Prepare for the NFL

I could see him leave to be closer to family but he physically is not going to the NFL. There is not a better qb coach in college football than what he has at NU. He may also want a career in coaching...and being at NU would be 2nd to none for that experience.

Why would you say that? He had plenty of opportunities to win the starting job when his only competition was a random walk-on and a true freshman who hasn't played since his junior year. The way he throws the ball he really needs to be 6-4 220...or with his size he really needs to be shifty and creative. Nearly every school in the nation is going to a mobile qb and if they aren't it is viewed as a liability. So not sure how he is going to start at top places with his size and average mobility.

Gebbia was recruited for a completely different system. Of course Martinez has the edge at the end of the day, and Gebbia still took the competition down to the final week. I am not say he would be a starter for Bama or Ohio St, maybe top was the wrong choice of words, what I meant was many Power 5 schools.

Yep, Just because he was named the starter doesn't mean it is his to keep for the year. Gebbia could easily take it at some point this year. If there were as close as everyone made it sound, it wouldn't take much.

Yeah, well then that nickname stinks. Gotta make it exciting and lofty, and nothing more exciting and lofty than talking up your ability to close the deal on hot co-eds at closing time.

Um, I think you need to come in off the ledge. For anyone to think that Martinez is starting as part of a means to secretly redshirt him...would indicate the theorist was at very least on a horrendously bad acid trip.

Really? How about:
1. Playing time
2. Chance to start
3. Play in a system that fits your abilities
4 chance to compete for a starting job

Two schools I can think of right away would be Texas Tech and Washington State. There are more, these just come to mind. He will get bigger, that won't be a problem.
