I have had an AR platform with Magpul flip up sights on a quad Pictinny rail for a number of years. As I have gotten older with bifocals it is getting harder to focus the front sight and I am looking for a quality scope in the $ 2-500 range of American manufacture. It will be used primarily on the range and home defense. Any experience with all the choices available?

In that price range, Leupold or Nikon would be my choices. There are newer/trendier manufacturers out there, but both of those have top-notch optics, excellent fit and finish, and good customer support (plus, will more than likely still be around 10 to 15 years from now unlike many of the newer manufactures).
Of the two, if you can find one that fits your needs in your price range, I’d probably lean towards Nikon, But have several of both and and happy with them all.

Check out the Vortex Strike Eagle 1X6X24 at Primary Arms.com. A quality optic with a lifetime warranty for around 300, also the Primary Arms brand has some high-quality optics similar to the Strike Eagle and more affordable.

I am looking at Midway USA on another machine. They list a Nikon P-223 and also a Leupold AR Mod1 both are 2-9X x 40mm. Thoughts?

I’m pretty stoked to know a person with bifocals has an AR-15. For home defense, nonetheless. You’re going to end up shooting one of your family members or a chair in the middle of the night. o_O

Just bought an ATN digital night/day scope for a little over 500. The thing is freaking giant and makes my 6920 look tiny. I’m curious to see how it performs but something like that wouldnt make for good home defense optics.

If you knew anything about bifocals and firearms you would not have made your post. Why don't you go back to sleep and let those interested have a conversation.

I specialize in neither bifocals nor firearms. Just know the two probably shouldn't be paired in certain situations. Like peanuts and gum.

Well, he did clearly state that he is just gonna guess what his target is, and just start shooting. Good on you for setting him straight.

Actually, they work great together. Except when coming out of air conditioning to extreme humidity, lol I gotta get better glasses

If you would go back to video games instead of peeing on everyone that responds to a "rifle scope" post their would be a lot more civility in America.
Oh, man... Yeah, I haven’t played video games since N64. Also, you’re on the internet. Go search “best x for x purpose.” You can get reviews from millions on yelp, amazon, etc, as opposed to the 57 same dudes (and possibly dudettes) that post here.

This isn’t about civility in America (which is a continent, not a country), and you know it.

Of those two I’d go wit the P-223. Has a 42mm front element. Generally speeking, the larger the front element, the better the scope performs in low light situations. May I ask, what will you be using this AR for? If varmit hunting, definitely go with the bigger diameter front element.

Leupold, in Beaverton, OR. Look them up., Maybe Vortex?, Had a Special forces guy come to our gun club and Leupold
made him a special scope, I looked thur it, (made for 2 miles) dead center, with 7mm, .338 lupa. H also, had a New scope ( made by Leupold) but, its not for sale. Strictly for AR 16's.

Warranty is only good as long as the company exists...just saying.
They have been around long enough, my life could depend on my firearm (LEO) I run Vortex. Leupold and Nikon both make great optics, they also make "economical optics " that cut corners to keep cost down

So nobody can give an opinion on anything, especially if you are triggered. Well done.

I run a Vortex Spitfire 3x32mm EBR-556B Rifle Scope on my AR-15 and absolutely love it. It's great for target shooting out to a few hundred yards. It has a mil spec tree reticle with yardage marks that can be illuminated in red/green if desired, no illumination is great too. Vortex's unconditional lifetime warranty can't be beat.

Triggered? I made a comment about how impaired vision and assault rifles may not mix, and everyone got extremely butthurt, he flips to second to short, and onto first.

Dollar for dollar, I’ll take Leupold and Nikon any day over Vortex. The Vortex Crossfire line is a compleat garbage, Chinese product. Some of their higher end lines are descent.

To each their own, bottom line is use what your comfortable with. I wasn't talking about the crossfire series, which I believe is an entry level item. I mentioned the Strike Eagle which is a few hundred more and better quality.

I quit reading this thread when it started south so I may be repeating some things.

I would want to know what you are going to shoot with the AR. I have a Simmons with 50mm and have never mounted it, great big picture but it can let in too much light and on a hot day things can get pretty distorted.

Shooting 100 yard prairie dogs or varmints? Self defense or do you want co-witness? I have a couple of vortex red dots and they are good for the money. Not a long distance scope for sure.

As was said when sanity was speaking at the beginning - you can't go wrong with Leupold and Nikon optics but there is some good competition lately. Do to a good size gun shop like Cabela's which is a showroom for Amazon and try all of them out.
