No

NU won 4 games last year
Squeaked by Something Arkansas (not the Razorbacks)
Struggled in win over Rutgers
Got lucky in win over Purdue
Lost to Northern Illinois
Got CRUSHED by Minnesota
Got CRUSHED by Iowa
Got boat raced by PSU, OSU. WIsconsin and Oregon (thanks for letting up)

We shall see if there is significant improvement with primarily Smilin Mikes players off of that great standard of success.
Riley is gone now. He sucked, and he can't hurt you anymore. No need to move the goalposts. Or do you not believe in the new staff?

I'd just like to point out that nobody offering criticism of the recruiting class brought up Riley. One poster brought up Riley to impugn another poster's assessment of the class, and then he and a bunch of others went on some tirade and tangent about how there are still Riley apologists who don't care about results blah, blah, blah. Nevermind the fact that no one actually stated that or tried to defend that view.

I'd also point out that no one said they were trying to make the recruiting class look better than it in fact is. When teams like Tennessee consistently out recruit us, it makes perfect sense to find some way of measuring relative success, and comparing the improvement of rankings, as opposed to the rankings themselves, is one way to do that. Of course, that may be problematic for a number of reasons but I do not see why one of those reasons had to be the equivalent of trying to put lipstick on a pig.
Don't bring facts into this.

I was a Riley apologist at the beginning of the 2017 season, left that train after the NIU debacle, with all remaining hope snuffed out at the end of the NW game. That is over now.
Frost is now the coach and I hope never to have to be a Frost apologist.
I couldn’t be more in line with this. This is exactly the trajectory I followed as well.

The fact that I have not gone down the path that says he’s the worst coach ever seems to upset some people, but that doesn’t mean I am upset he was fired, nor does it mean I’m not on board with the Frost hire. And I know I’m speaking for others on this board as well who jumped off after NIU.

For Cigar to not only imply this, but present it as fact, is absolutely hilarious.

I jumped off when he was hired...I climbed back up and jumped off again after BYU...Just to prove my point.

There are far too many people more worried about "I told you so". You know, you can support a coach and still be OK with firing the same coach. You can also not have supported a coaching hire and still support the coach and the team since it is a done deal. Both are valid :p

But just like a bad date or a bad marriage, we have to go to extremes and make the good angels and the bad devils. You can't just have had a bad run, you have to be the absolute worst ever.

The difference between you and some of these other Riley lovers is you aren't still apologizing for him and you aren't throwing darts at frosts progress

I've always said they are fun. Many on here didn't believe me, but I was totally right. I know more stuff and I am smarter than all you losers who doubted me.

**NOTE: The above is a sarcastic post intended to be funny. I have never made a definitive statement on the level of fun of "I told you so's". Please do not get your panties in a bunch over this humorous post.**

If Nebraska finishes 25th in the final polls and Alabama finishes 8th, does that show Nebraska is making more progress than Alabama? .....No, it just means Nebraska is making progress.QUOTE]

I mean in that situation, it technically does mean Nebraska made more progress.

Who the hell is apologizing for Riley? Find one person. Also, Tuco was not, or at least not obviously, throwing darts at Frost's progress. That is how you interpreted it. What he actually did say is: "The fact remains if things finish as you suggest then according to Rivals, Nebraska will be ranked 5th of 6 of the schools you provided that had coaching changes." From that perspective, the progress doesn't seem as impressive as you make it out to be. So, naturally that is a challenge as to why we should look at things your way rather than Tuco's, and I thought you did a good job of defending why until you brought up Riley. Your point was that those schools usually out recruit us anyway, so a relative measure of success would seem to be more telling. I was persuaded by that point. But immediately after that you started fighting ghosts.

No mention of Ogbonnia? I think we have a really good chance with him because he wants to be a thrower on the track team too (like the Davis bros). He also wants to major in engineering (Ndamukong Suh anyone?). Should be an easy sell there.

I am hoping for Montgomery Jr. as well, we are in his Final 3 before he's even visited.

I still think Washington is a strong lean to ASU. The visit will have to blow him away. Jarrett Bell seems to be waiting for a Notre Dame offer. It just seems like he is not sold on Nebraska for some reason.

But he, reportedly, wants to be a PETROLEUM engineer for which it appears NU doesn't offer a major.

Neither do most of the other schools on his list. Indeed, of those given in the OWH article, only TX Tech appears to have petroleum engineering.

fair enough, I should have said, does that mean Nebraska is outperforming Alabama. If a school is typically ranked in the top 8 or 12, for three years, the probability of moving up more than 1 or 2 positions year to year is lower. There just isn't the room for upward growth.

If I have a 3.8 cumulative GPA for 3 years, then have 3.5 my senior year, I am still in better shape than the guy that had a 2.5 GPA for three years but earned a 3.2 GPA his senior year and I am better in both cumulative and for the senior year. That doesn't mean the other guy didn't make progress.

And you can believe that all the Riley apologists will still challenge every measuring stick regardless of how they ignored them under MR.

What measuring stick was ignored? The made up index of improvement in year one over a 3 year average of 6 schools that are going through a coaching change? I didn't necessarily ignore it, I just don't think it shows anything relevant. Those schools normally out recruit Nebraska, outside of aTm they are continuing to out recruit Nebraska, just by a lesser margin.

As far as your moral victories question, saying we aren't losing the recruiting battle by as large amount as usual is a text book definition of moral victory. Kind of like only losing to team A by 10 instead of 21. It is still a loss.

If a kid is dialed into a degree program like that, he choice of programs is going to be very limited.

And a 3 star kid from Houston that lives 7 miles from the Houston Energy Cooridor may well choose a degree program over a football program. I live here and see it every year. Kids choose the next 40 years over the next 4 all the time.

That seems doubtful.
Whatever. You are just an apologist, for something.

**NOTE: This post was also intended to be funny. I do not believe you are actually an apologist for "I told you so's", as once again, I do not have a strong stance on them. Please back away from the ledge now**

Tell him that Mechanical Engineering is a more versatile degree, especially with the future being more focused on green energy. And remind him that Suh isn't using even his engineering degree because he came to Nebraska and developed into the #2 draft pick and now has a net worth of $70 million.

I just am wondering if your adrenal glands are hypertrophied. Are you feeling tense, agitated, and is your blood pressure elevated? Take a deep breath and let it out, slowly. Maybe things will look better tomorrow.

It seems you go out of your way to be critical here. Obviously this year's class just a single data point. Nebraska has been a second tier (16-30) program in terms of recruiting for years, with a Rivals average going back to Bo's transition class of 24.4. The last two transition classes were at the higher end of NU's range (30 and 31). Frost's transition class has the potential to sneak just inside the top 20. A finish of 20 would tie for the third best NU class in the past decade and tie for the fourth best NU class in the Rivals online database. Callahan's transition class was 27th.
I see an excellent effort the staff, with a substantial improvement over the transition efforts of the last three coaches. Whether this group of recruiters can move the program into the top tier is something we won't know for a couple of years.

Yep
And unlike with Mike Riley
This coaching staff had to coach a bowl game with the team they were leaving so only part time
And we're recruiting to a team that had only won 4 games the previous year and 2 losing seasons in last 3 years

Smilin Mike and company were going through yet another losing season and were able to start right away
And we're recruiting to a team that had won 9/10 games for 7 consecutive years

One situation is much harder to recruit to than the other- fair minds agree

So going from number 30 to 19 or 20 comparatively would be very substantial

At this point I really do not care how we stack up recruiting wise to SEC schools - What I care about is how we are recruiting against #1 our Rivals in the west and #2 how we are measuring up against the balance of the Big10 - To that end Frost has come a long way in a hurry both in the quality of the recruits and the number of recruits

It is clear to me we will hold a significant talent edge against our west division rivals - this edge will become more acute in future years when we start steam rolling them on a yearly basis

Against the Big10 certainly we have a ways to go to reach OSU or say PSU level but that may only come after we have shown a great product on the field - we are basically recruiting level with Michigan at least this year

I would say as transitions go Frost has clearly shown much better results in recruiting than Solich,Callahan,Pelini or Riley and I do not think its even close

Would you say you see even more D1 kids choose football programs over degrees ever single year? I don't see how choosing to attend a top 100 engineering school fails to set you up for 40 years. It's no like he is going to MIT, Stanford, Cal or Cal Tech. Oh and another thing, F the Houston Energy Corridor! (never heard of 'em)

I was going to make the same comment. You don't NEED a Petro engineering BS to work at Exxon or BP or whatever. Plenty of people with IE, ME, EE, and Civil degrees working there in the same R&D jobs as Petro. I met dozens of engineers there while we were building their new corp campus in The Woodlands, TX.

As someone who is mentoring HS kids in the Chicago area my message is to seek a diverse engineering or STEM degree. You can live a hell of a lot more places with a strong ME degree and background. Choices are much more limited when you are doing Petro.
