Just said on 1620. Nebraska's last rushing TD was in the 2nd quarter of the Illinois game.

Although we have some decent backs, we really need a dynamic back that can make big plays. Unfortunately, I don't see us signing that type of back this year.

Hmmm.... our backs earn every yard they make. Most of the time they are hit behind the line of scrimmage or at the line. Compare that to teams that rush against us and first touch is often 5-7 yards downfield.

Not many of our former high level backs would do well running behind this line.

we could see this happening with the rushing performance last season.. the trajectory continues to point south.. of all the things to piss away, our running game shouldn't be it.. this really pisses me off more than anything else.

I heard we have scored 8 TDs on the ground, with our last one coming in September.

What do you expect from a WCO philosophy? Running is at the bottom of the list of goals..

Pass protection and an extra receiver is all a RB is good for.

Didnt Bill Walsh with Roger Craig and his 1krushing/1krecieving invent the west coast offense?

The points have to come from somewhere. With TA gone, we lost his rush production. Seems like there was an o/u bet for 25 passing TD's for TLee, and my big ? was what we'd lose in rushing. Looks like the chickens have come to roost for this offense.

Beat me to it. Craig rushed for a 1000 and caught a 1000 in one year. Of course they had a pretty good fullback who ran for quite a few yards too. Rathman. That was about as WCO as you can get. I think actually somebody else gets credit for the origin of the WCO but Walsh perfected his version.

No, what we need is a staff that’s committed to running the ball. If you watch practice, you can see a lack of run production coming. This offense is getting worse each year. We could have really used the QB run game this year. That added dimension would have helped the offense move the ball. So now we have a QB that’s a statue back there.

If you don’t practice the run, you cannot very well expect to run the ball in a game. The practices lack physicality and the team is becoming soft. This staff is committed to throwing the ball all over place and the run game has disappeared.

You’ve seen this in practice this year having attended a practice or practices? Just curious...

I listened to Sports Nightly traveling home tonight and Coach Cav was on. One of the listeners asked a pointed question about recruits being on campus for a visit during game day, how can they have a good time when they see that NU can’t run the GD ball!?
Cav literally said “Im speechless...we need to do better”
Most of the other questions tonight revolved around him giving convoluted answers about player development. At one point he was answering a question about Gates and Foster and how inconsistent they are, Cav essentially had no answer as to why his upperclassmen were underperforming. Said that player development is a “two way street” and that he leaves it up to his players to take to his coaching, that they have to want to be coached.
It sounded highly dysfunctional
Sounds like he coaches himself out of options by his take it or leave it coaching style and his refusal to be consistent and use the bench or whatever other tools to bring guys along.
Cav has been an anchor on this sinking ship and his guys don’t help bail much water

I think it was Walsh who originally designed the offense but at the time Air Coryell was around too and known as a west coast offense but the term stuck to the Walsh system. It was created by a shoulder injury if I'm not mistaking. Walsh had a QB who injured his shoulder and wasn't much of a vertical threat so he whipped up a system that supported that shoulder injury. A horizontal passing offense that would open up vertical options and open up running lanes. Never been a fan of it at the college ranks, I think it's too player dependent to work at most schools.

People often wonder why our WR's are never open. Your answer is that horizontal passing game. You're throwing in to traffic on these short timed routes, that is kind of the idea.

I don't think we're running a true WCO, I think it's certainly had some influence though.

Great coaching staffs tailor their offense to what talent they have. Regardless of basic offensive philosophy, it is hard to score any touchdowns when you have a timid quarterback and a division II quality offensive line.

Extremely well stated sir. On the money. We're a Beaver fluff-ball team.

Yes, I have seen practices and they are appalling! Football is a violent game and if you don’t practice being physical and violent, you can’t just turn it on in a real game. We are soft!

Riley is a head coaching disaster! I can’t see why he keeps Cavanaugh on staff.
