Well we're still paying Pelini and now Eichorst. I'm not sure on the accounting for buyouts. I don't know if the money comes through the University Foundation designated athletic gifts or current income (B1G etc). You need a bean counter to figure that stuff out. We have the money. The question is if we want to spend it or not.Could someone please educate me on how a buyout works? Does the money come directly out of the Athletic Department's budget or does it come from football boosters? Further, does Mike Riley's buyout (which I believe is now $7 million thanks to the brilliant decision to extend his contract) really pose a problem for a program as profitable as Nebraska? The article makes it out to be a real hurdle.

Soooo roughly 5 M/year to go away...... I have a hunch that a new AD is going to think long and hard before canning Riley and then having to turn around and pay 3-5M/year to get a guy who may or may not work out. With the information I ran across a few weeks ago, NU will be paying about 400K per month on the contracts of Bo, SE, and MR (if let go) through 2020....

That isn't going to happen and you know it. He either wins soon or he'll be gone. There is a point where you reach the point of diminishing returns in your football program. Are we there yet or are we still able to sell tickets based on hope for one more year. I dunno. IF we can sell the tickets, Riley will probably be back. The buyout is expensive for sure. But how expensive will it be if we keep Riley until the end of his contract and we go 3-9 every year with 35,000 in the stands?
Well that is my point. I guess I wasn't being clear. Sorry. I think we are already getting close to the apathy phase. We can fret over the cost of a buyout or we can look at the clear signs of danger. As I was leaving the stadium on Saturday I overheard many people who are season ticket holders and who knew each other asking each other if they were coming next week. And about half of them said no way. I expect there will be many no shows next week and a half empty stadium after the half if it is a blowout. And it won't be long at all before those no shows become non ticket buyers. That isn't going to happen and you know it. He either wins soon or he'll be gone. That is why IF Riley can pull out a winning record this year you "almost" have to keep him. I can see why IF they want Frost they would go get him but man you would be starting all over again. I think we could have a shot at upsetting Ohio State at home IF everything goes right. Hell ISU beat OU at home so why not. Penn State would require them to lose their QB and maybe the RB IMO. Northwestern and Iowa are toss ups. We better win at least one of those and all the other games. You take Frost out of the equation and I would much rather see us hold on to Riley no matter what and "adjust" the staff.Well that is my point. I guess I wasn't being clear. Sorry. The problem is that we are now on our fourth failed post Osborne coach. So the psyche of the fan base is probably even more fragile and fed up now than it was in 2007.
I agree 100%. Beating OSU would be huge. I would love to be able to keep Riley. Sadly, I am not optimistic. My EXPECTATION as it was before the year was a 3 TD or more loss to OSU so why fear it. They've recruited MUCH better than us for the past years and they have a coach who has won several NCs. I EXPECT to get beat but hey, on any given Saturday...so go enjoy the battle. Root for the home team and if not there's always alcohol. I EXPECTED to lose to Wisconsin. They're a top 10 team and we're not....yet. It hurts but I still don't think we've given Riley a fair chance to try to rebuild a program that has been mired in average mediocrity since Frank's 7 loss season.I agree 100%. and Lincoln Riley stomped the hell out of Urban so what's your point. It happens.OU is coached by Lincoln Riley.
tOSU is still coached by Urban Meyer (who I believe is hell bent on winning a National Championship this year, so he is trying to blowout everyone left on their schedule).
He’s wrong. There aren’t many people that have made millions by paying people not to work....just to make others weekend a little happier. B1G money and BTN money is what made ath depts so obscenely flushA friend who used to work in the Athletic office says that'd most likely be a check the boosters would write. That was my impression before I asked.
That was my preseason expectation as well for the OSU game. But that was before we lost to NIU.My EXPECTATION as it was before the year was a 3 TD or more loss to OSU so why fear it. I'm pretty sure the boosters are involved. You can do all kinds of accounting tricks and say the money comes from this or that source, however it is the boosters who write the checks annually that the Universities have always relied on.He’s wrong. The interesting dynamic is how does Tom feel about canning a bunch of coaches who have done nothing but tried to embrace his former assistants and players? He passed over Turner some say because he didn't want to subject him to the heat of the fire. Would Tom be pulling for Frost to get the NU job or does Tom think we should try to "fix" things like he thought we could have done with Frank. A couple of the regents (a few of whom are huge donors) think a whole bunch of Tom and his opinion. A couple of former Huskers could lose their jobs if we can Riley and last time I checked I don't think Frost has a single former Husker on his staff.I'm pretty sure the boosters are involved. With the obscene amount of money coming in lately from the B1G, that could possibly change the dynamic a bit, but traditionally, big boosters get what they want because they pay for it.
Think of it this way, if your going out for a family dinner, and your rich uncle suggests seafood, that's where everyone is going and it is understood that he is going to pay.. that's usually how it how it sort of works.
Yeah, I think there are under currents regarding Tom, and even though he and Scott remain close, I don't see that as an issue. For me, it doesn't have to be a bunch of Nebraska guys doing all the assistant coaching, but there needs to be some sort if identity here that isn't so different from the past that made us successful. I think Scott would get us close enough that people won't worry so much about what play is called on 3rd and 2. I also think Scott would be another good attempt by the administration to right the ship. There are no sure things in life, but hiring old coaches don't make much sense to me. If it's not Scott, a young bright up and coming coach is about the best you can do. Try to find one that has a similar identity culture/fit.The interesting dynamic is how does Tom feel about canning a bunch of coaches who have done nothing but tried to embrace his former assistants and players? Oh, they have opinions. There’s a difference between that and writing a check for someone not to work... and I am a booster, as is the company I work for. There are limits. Like last year the adept came groveling to us to buy more ticket to keep the sell out streak alive. We politely told them to pound sand.I'm pretty sure the boosters are involved. It seems like people forget that Wilhite and Parrella are a couple of Tom's boys so he may not want to see them fired. On the other side, it seems like he never really warmed up to Riley much even though it appears Riley made an effort. I don't have any real knowledge of the relationship between TO and Riley- just an outsider's perspective. The interesting dynamic is how does Tom feel about canning a bunch of coaches who have done nothing but tried to embrace his former assistants and players? Being a Husker would buy Scott a little more time, but it wouldn't be indefinite either. Lots of people remember him spurning NU for Stanford and then the ASU game. The money turned against Frank that 7-7 year pretty quickly. Then Pedy pulled the rug at a really awkward time thinking he was going to be a hero by returning us to past glory with an NFL hire...ooops.For me, it doesn't have to be a bunch of Nebraska guys doing all the assistant coaching, but there needs to be some sort if identity here that isn't so different from the past that made us successful. and you know this because?????Riley's effort was little and just for show he didn't mean anything by it and TO knew it.
What will Scotty s buyout be when he fails????With the information I ran across a few weeks ago, NU will be paying about 400K per month on the contracts of Bo, SE, and MR (if let go) through 2020....
Bull. Like Riley didn't go out of his way to accommodate Milt Tenopir and make him feel special when he wanted to spend the last year of his life watching practices. I bet TO would have gotten the same special treatment if he had wanted to come down to practice once in awhile, which he didn't. TO's amazing run at Nebraska and Riley's lack of success aside, TO hasn't done HCMR any favors unless there is a relationship or behind the doors support we know nothing about.Riley's effort was little and just for show he didn't mean anything by it and TO knew it.

Personally, I would like to see us hire an A.D. and, barring a total collapse of the program, keep Riley & Co. on for another season. Not just to give them another chance, but to evaluate everyone from the top down. And also to get a feel for what will work here at Nebraska. If you ask me, old time Nebraska football, whether it is the 70's, 80's or 90's which featured three different offenses really, can be summed up this way: Nebraska football is Wisconsin football with higher ranked recruiting classes. That's what we should strive for.Soooo roughly 5 M/year to go away...... I have a hunch that a new AD is going to think long and hard before canning Riley and then having to turn around and pay 3-5M/year to get a guy who may or may not work out.
That mediocrity we were mired in was much better than this. We hadn't had a losing season in seven years before Riley came. Calling this a rebuild is silly. My EXPECTATION as it was before the year was a 3 TD or more loss to OSU so why fear it. You apologists are really having to dig deep to find reasons to keep Riley. This is sad, it's so glaring you care about him more than the program.Soooo roughly 5 M/year to go away......
