Where to eat this weekend?

Obey's IS still good. Expensive for the type of food, but the portions are large and it's consistently good.


These are my top choices in order (based on food quality, service, consistency, and portion size)...

Two Bro's
Restaurant Tyler
Obey's
Starkville Cafe
The Grill
Mugshots
Bulldog Burger
Bin 612
Breakfast Club
Little Dooey
La Terraza for traditional Mexican
Andaman for Tai
Lost Pizza and Dave's for pizza
Hobie's for Tamales (Sells Heavenly from Greenville)

Moe's is just too limited menu wise. Plus I will always think OVPC when I'm there.
Commodore Bob's is way too expensive for the product.
Georgia Blue has been a disappointment all 3 times I've been. Mostly due to service because they always seem short handed.
1812 Smokehouse has NEVER gotten my order right, but the service is always nice and their food is tasty.
Boardtown Pizza isn't bad, but the atmosphere kills it for me.
King's Butcher wasn't bad either, but atmosphere.
I go to Rosey Baby once in a blue moon and every time I'm reminded why I rarely go there. It could be really good, but it's like they don't care.



Haven't been to Uno Mas or Humble Taco, but for the life of me I don't understand why these two restaurant's opened. I mean Starkville doesn't need that type of place. We desperately need a good Steak restaurant and a Keifer's type place for Greek. (Una Mas' location would've been perfect for a Gyro and draft beer place, and Humble Taco should be a nice steak restaurant like Walker's in Jackson.

In fairness, Lil Dooey and Oby's are average on their best days. City Grocery and Ajax are generally really tasty. Is Handy Andy still around? It's certainly more in the average category. Hell, I've never not enjoyed oxford Chevron chicken on a stick.

Dooey's has always been overrated to me. I like their catfish and they have some good crawfish when it's in season. But as a guy who's a connoisseur of Memphis BBQ (with the waist line to prove it), I've always thought their barbeque sucked. Same for Dreamland.

Oby's has been average at best since the late 90s. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, they've always been grossly overpriced for what you get there.

I'm not going to "prop up" Dooey's just because they're in Starkville. There are plenty of local-owned places to eat in Starkville that are terrific. Dooey needs to up their game, because they aren't the only game in town anymore.

Mostly agree on all. I might could make better bbq in my crockpot than Dooey's - do hear plenty good about the catfish though. I haven't had Dreamland in 15+ years and it was tasty then, but it may have been nostalgia as much as anything for me.

Maybe? I could be convinced either way. I don’t know many people who would care about that, honestly. I don’t mean this in any way, but I just don’t know that many people who would actually take it that serious. They want MSU to lose, but they aren’t not going to eat a good meal because the company calls themselves bulldogs. Would there be some that wouldn’t? Sure. But I don’t think it would be enough to prevent it from doing well.

Did you not see the Strange Brew controversy earlier this year? Most of the outrage was perpetuated by Ole Miss fans who are mad that the location in Tupelo is decidedly pro-Mississippi State.

No State-centric restaurant, particularly one named "Bulldog Burger Company," would make it very long in Oxford. They'd have to call it "Rebel Burger Company" or something like that. In that case, yeah, it would be wildly successful.

If by "always", you mean post-early 90's, I'll buy on Dooey's. Oby's went to crap when they changed their menu to make franchising easy which was likely around the late 90's. No more hand cut fries, gravy in plastic bowls instead of the old metal plates/bowls, etc.

Not sure if it's just all the alcohol and date rape drugs leave them constantly easy to please, but they really do worship average restaurants there. Not sure how long it lasted, but Oby's was blowing and going in Oxford for a while and people there raved about it. This is very dated information, but at one time, Oxford had City Grocery (which was really good), and then a lot of decent if overrated places, and that's really all that was good about their restaurant scene, was that they paid a lot for a lot of decent options and so had a lot of decent if not great options that would have gone out of business in most towns twice as large.

I mean, was it really an outrage? Or was it a few idiots who likely weren’t going there anyways? Much ado gets made over nothing now because every idiot has a platform, via social media.

I don’t disagree with you that a Rebel Burger Company would probably do better in Oxford. That’s common sense. And if I owned Bulldog Burger (but had originally named it Rebel Burger) I’d probably open the one in Starkville as Bulldog Burger.

But, I just don’t think the vast majority of people care. I’ve eaten at Bulldog Burger in Tupelo with my family 3-4 times over the last 6 months, and every single person in my party is an Ole Miss fan. And not once, literally not once, has the name of the place ever come up.
