Where to eat this weekend?

I am coming into Starkville this weekend for the games. All the places I am nostalgic for are now gone or awful (17 you Aramark) except Pap's Place, and I just can't eat that much food anymore due to Metformin.

Also what are the mask rules there now? Last I heard Dave's Dark Hole was still closed because of them or something.

Dave’s has been open...I’ve been there a couple times after baseball games this year so if they are closed it’s on them. There are no mask rules wear it if you want who cares...

Oby's was the original home of the ten dollar sandwich....before Newks and Panera came around and made it trendy cool.

Definitely agree on the tips from Spotlight. I'll also add that Rosey Baby is has had a new manager for a year or so and is back to one of my favorite spots in town.

In the '80s Oby's was very good, the best. The lines were long but moved fast and they still had the jumbo frozen mugs for coldest beer around (remember those ice chunks floating up from the bottom) and Don was at the register or running orders to tables. Fast forward to the mid to late 90's and I don't know what it was but it was lacking and it kept slumping. I haven't been in probably 3 years now and I live in Starkville. He sold out Starkville location last year to the guys that own the one in Oxford so I don't know what has happened since then. I went twice to the one in Flowood during the short time it stayed open and it was horrible, service was bad and food not much better. The last night I went I kid you not there was not 1 table in the place that was cleaned, dishes everywhere at the tables that weren't serving which was the majority. We had to wait for them to clean one and it took forever.

Glad someone else agrees. I went there 3-4 times in the early nineties when I was at State, and it was very plainly as average as average gets most times and just outright horrific on one occasion.

Recommendation for obey’s if you go back: roast beef sandwich that you can dip in the gravy they give you on the side is good living....****.....I want one now.

Im with you. Uno Mas is my new favorite Mexican. The Carne Asada Burrito is fantastic. Humble Taco menu sounds great, but just doesnt live up to the hype and food was cold 2 out 3 times.

Two Bros chicken/white bbq taco and shrimp taco are best in town.

We went to Oby’s this past weekend, and it was great. Chicken strips, cheese dip, and sandwiches were all the same as I remembered. That said, $55 on lunch for a family of 4 was a little extreme. We took 6 to Casa Brava the next night, and it was barely $60 after dinner, appetizers, and jumbo margaritas for all but the kids

Tyrone ran a great restaurant for a number of years. As you said, in the 80’s - that ice cold round goblet of beer was THE coldest anywhere and the food was excellent!!
At some point after franchising it begin to slip and things really haven’t been as good since.
The last time I was there was a late Saturday afternoon lunch prior to a basketball game about two weeks prior to Covid and while good, wasn’t fantastic but the nostalgia and the gravy for my roast beef poboy was still spot on.

Agree with Humble Taco (been twice) Won’t go a 3rd. GA Blue wasn’t great either but will give it another shot down the road.

Haven't tried Uno Mas but I was not impressed with Humble Taco. Food wasn't bad but I was underwhelmed after reading the hype stories. Drink service was terrible but food service was ok just not that tasty

i live in Oxford and would whole heartedly spend much money there, but you know as well as I do they couldn’t open a Bulldog Burger Company in Oxford.

Maybe? I could be convinced either way. I don’t know many people who would care about that, honestly. I don’t mean this in any way, but I just don’t know that many people who would actually take it that serious. They want MSU to lose, but they aren’t not going to eat a good meal because the company calls themselves bulldogs. Would there be some that wouldn’t? Sure. But I don’t think it would be enough to prevent it from doing well.

As some mentioned Anthony's I have to thrown in that Golden Horn is also extremely good again. Probably the best steak in the area

I always loved the Golden Horn and wondered why no one ever mentioned it. It had that old county club lounge feel but man their steaks were spot on.

In fairness, Lil Dooey and Oby's are average on their best days. City Grocery and Ajax are generally really tasty. Is Handy Andy still around? It's certainly more in the average category. Hell, I've never not enjoyed oxford Chevron chicken on a stick.

OK, in the future when someone asks for legit recommendations from someone that lives here, goes to the places and talks to others that do on a daily basis, I'll instead just make up good **** and put it out there instead of telling the truth about "long time institutions."

If they suck at something, then they suck, doesn't matter how long they've been in business. Why would you want to hear fluff instead of the truth and go spend your money there if they are questionable?

I’m going to vehemently disagree. The Little Dooey could not survive Oxford and more than one customer commented that there was too much association with the school beneath them. Heard that comment made several times. I don’t think Oby’s has nearly the same connotation with Starkville.
