No bets on his arm sport, I hope he's still dealing 10 years from now, he's been great to watch. Just thought i'd have an lol on you'r teams behalf and didn't mean to insinuate any opinion on exactly how many pitches in 4, 7, 17 or 27.5 days is acceptable. I'm still going to check in after 9 though.

And now having to use your closer in the 7th?

If he pitches the 8th and 9th, guess it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, he ain’t pitching again before Friday.

Do you pitch Nikhazy on Sunday in the championship game? He’ll have 4 days rest. And he’ll have 4 days rest before pitching against the 4-seed in game 1 of the regional.

NO, unless in limited capacity AND we intend to save him for game two of the regional.

Have you ever even heard of Mike Bianco? Won’t throw again until Friday, that’s cute!

I’m obviously just being a smart ***, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Broadway throws again tonight or tomorrow. For better or worse, Bianco takes this tournament very seriously. And Broadway has been a work horse all year, mostly out of necessity.

However, last night was a do or die game, and he managed it as such. It’s now a double elimination format, so he should try to spread the work around to some guys. He’s still desperately trying to find another dependable arm or two out of the pen. We were hopeful it would be Brandon Johnson. And I bet he intended on him to work the final 3 last night, but he got hit a little bit. Dude throws hard (96-97) but it’s flat. And he’s been on the bench all year for a reason you’d have to think. Normally a dude throw 95+ gets multiple opportunities, and he’s been used sparingly.

Stop moving the goalposts.

Why aren't you counting the five pitches he throws between every inning? Or the 40 he threw in the bullpen to warm up? Or the 80 he threw between starts? And how do you know he was fatigued? Just because he exceeded 100 pitches, he's automatically fatigued? I mean, do you even know the first damn thing about strength and conditioning?

Hopefully at some point you will start to see how silly you are being. Pitch counts are fine for guard rails. But a specific number shouldn't be applied generically to everyone. There are many different variables at play. Mike Bianco knows a helluva lot more about what Nikhazy is capable of than you and your theoretical nonsense.
All these things have long been taken into account with these protocols, and you know that already, you just don't want to accept it or change. Pitch count is objective, and all the warm-ups average out. Not to mention coaches everywhere are starting to re-think bullpen sessions.

How do you not understand that being on the mound vs a hitter is different than warming up? 25 years, right? El Oh El.

Heck yeah he will. That also allows him to throw him again on Monday of the regional like he did with Pomeranz.

I clearly understand it far better than you do. You're really, really, REALLY embarrassing yourself.

But yet you keep coming at me like I'm some anti-Bianco State homer. You know better.

I read back through this thread to see if I was missing something or forgot where I was "coming at you" and all I can figure out is maybe you are referring to the comment where I commented in response to Drebin that some of these things don't fit the narrative on Bianco. I see why maybe you could feel that was directed at you, since Drebin was responding to you and you and him were disagreeing on the topic.. but, it was not. It was more of a general comment that a lot of the things thrown out about Bianco being someone abuses arms just isn't true. And a lot of it is comparing apples to oranges.

As far as last night, I would've preferred that Doug stayed around the 80 pitch mark, instead of 95. But to say those 15 pitches are going to make some major difference just isn't true.. and if you look at the game, and not just an arbitrary pitch count number, you'd likely agree that keeping him in for those last 15 pitches, which was the 6th inning may have very well been the difference in the game. It was 5-2 when Doug handed the ball to Johnson, and then it quickly went to 5-4 and we had to go to Broadway to close it out. If we give our bullpen another full inning to have to work, then there's a decent chance we lose that game.

People get so hung up on that pitch count number, and I get it.. but none of us are charting how many pitches he threw in the bullpen, how many warmup pitches he threw between innings, etc. So, if those 10-15 extra pitches are THAT DIRE, that seems like something we'd be tracking, right? Plus, like we discussed, once you factor in that Nikhazy would've thrown a 70-pitch bullpen session that day anyways, that 95 number doesn't seem quite so drastic.

I don't think you're some "anti-Bianco State homer". I think you're typically pretty fair when it comes to Ole Miss and other MSU opponents. I think you are a knowledgeable baseball fan, who clearly cares about the sport. But, I also think that you dig your heels in on things, particularly this topic. We are all guilty of that, especially on these forums. Or at least I know that I am.. but sometimes it's just OK to recognize that someone doesn't share the same opinion as you, and just let it go. No one is coming at you. Or least I'm not.

Fair enough, and on the issue of arm care, I have a vested interest in it. It's definitely difficult to see how anyone can have a differing opinion, considering the evidence, but it is what it is.

No comparisons but just for the sake of conversation I would be interested on your take on football in general and CTE.

Which "coaches everywhere" are starting to re-think bullpen sessions? You say stuff like this as if you believe people will think, "oh wow, goat must really know what he's talking about because he's hearing from 'coaches everywhere.'" But those of us who know better are laughing at stuff like this.

Have you ever warmed up a pitcher at a high school or college level? (of course you haven't)
Have you ever caught warm up pitches between innings? (of course you haven't)
Have you ever caught a snap pickoff throw from a pitcher during a game? (probably not)
Have you ever even caught a pitch from anyone over the age of eight? (probably not)

There's no difference between throwing bullets in the bullpen warming up and throwing bullets during the game. Over the course of a game, roughly a quarter of pitches thrown in a good outing can be considered "stress pitches." The rest of them are the same. So if you're going to count pitches, you have to count everything else too.

Guardrails are fine, but they should look something like this: Don't exceed 35 pitches in an inning, ever. Vary pitch counts across the staff, depending on who it is and what they throw, and how much rest they've had. Never pitch a reliever more than three days in a row. This is based on my experience and what I've heard from others I trust as well as a couple of orthopedic doctors I'm tight with, not because of what someone wrote on the internet because they're catching the vapors over number of TJ cases.

There are a million theories out there. Some of them even try to get passed off as absolute truth. You have this theory on pitch counts and tying them to Tommy John because you either read it somewhere, or somebody else read it somewhere and told it to you. You talked elsewhere in this thread about having a "vested interest" in this subject. Well, then you should have a vested interested in understanding the facts instead of digging your heals in on a subject you are clearly out of your depth on. I can tell you with a million percent certainty that overworking pitchers is not a sole cause of TJ. It can be a factor, but the more frequent causes of TJ are sudden trauma events, similar to any other ligament injury.

Very good comparison. The data doesn't lie with CTE either, repeated hits aren't good. Football is embracing things like flag leagues at younger ages, head's up tackling, and other things to minimize the damage. But of course, it's a risk every time you strap up, just as it is a risk every time you throw the ball.

The key is to not PURPOSELY go into the situation and disregard certain limits, which are agreed upon. Don't overthrow pitchers, don't allow leading with the head in tackling.
