Cant decide which is more badass, watching this rover maneuver for a landing on Mars or watching the falcon 9 boosters return to Earth and land themselves.

Looks like the desert to me. Probably filmed somewhere in new Mexico or Arizona**

Ever driven through that area? It wouldn’t be hard to film a moon landing scene there. Not saying it was fake, just funny that the topography looks similar. I remember being surprised at the similarities when we drove through when I was a teenager.

It's a sound stage at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Al. Saved tax payer money since it was originally built with Apollo money.

Eh. Driven through both 4 times and flown over W AZ more times than i can count. Southern NM is too sandy and Northern NM is too colorful. Mars looks like the terrain in between Yuma and Havasu; east of the Salton Sea.

Well, they’re both rocky and devoid of water, so not surprising they look similar. Every rocky planet is made the same way, I assume, a bunch of asteroids and comets colliding.

For sure. Seeing that area in pictures was one thing, but actually seeing it was another. Kinda like the Grand Canyon. You know what it looks like, but when you see it in person, it’s different than you expected.

I can attest to the fact that space travel is real. I worked a co-op job while in college at MSU at the NASA test site in Hancock County. It was past the days when they were testing the Apollo rocket engines down there, but I saw the testing areas. I really don't think they would have built all of that just to do a fake tv studio landing on the moon or Mars. I've also seen Cape Canaveral and Marshall Space Flight center in Huntsville. Unbelievable that there are people who actually think it is all fake news.

Edited to add- If the money that has been spent on war had been put into space exploration, mankind could be truly exploring the universe, and possibly building habitats on other planets, by now.

At some point, we will have communities on Mars, and then beyond. We won’t be alive for it, but that will be a hell of a time to be alive.

I don't get the space thing. I can see benefit perhaps from "Star Wars Defense Systems" but as far as landing in places w/ ****** atmospheres, little to no water, oxygen, extreme temperatures, etc I don't get it. People in this country don't want to wear a mask to the grocery store, how you gonna get them to put a damn space suit on to go outside?

If you had told people even just 150 years ago that people would be flying all over the planet one day, they would have laughed you out of the room.

You believe we will deplete our resources until they are worse than the resources on Mars?

I'll answer your question with a question. Do you believe that there are no habitable planets in the entire universe other than Earth? Mars would just be a testing ground to exploring and colonizing other planets outside of our own solar system.

And remember- 500 years ago most people thought that Earth was the center of the entire universe.

I believe it will never be more practical/feasible to live on another planet than it will be to live in whatever condition our planet is in.

Uh huh, that is what your reptilian overlords want you to believe. Meanwhile there are chemicals in the water turning the frogs gay.

And rightfully so. 150 years ago, we didn't even have cars much less airplanes.
The Wright Brothers 1st flight was 1903. Just 66 years after that we put men on the moon.
It's been 52 years since that first moon landing and we've yet to even attempt to send man further into space.

Mars is just the next logic progression point and we have the technology to do it.
It's time.

I've driven the route from Albuquerque southward to White Sands several times, and also from Phonenix to Yuma (had several test programs at Yuma, so I went many times), then north to I-10, and even to Las Vegas and back to Phoenix once. NM south of Albuquerque is reddish - looks like they probably made the old western movies there. The part of Arizona that I've been in is lighter in color. The area between Phoenix and Vegas is full of Joshua trees (it's the Joshua Tree National Forest, in fact). So I still vote for NM south of Albuquerque as be most Mars-like. There's not a lot of vegetation there either.

I live within a quarter mile of the western boundary of the Arsenal. The test stands are a few miles to the east, maybe 6 or 7. I'm pretty sure it's just a large speaker emitting sounds powerful enough to rattle my house at times - no real rocket engine tests. Fake smoke too. **

I think you and a lot of other people underestimate the challenges of even landing humans on Mars, much less living there.
