That’s a little disappointing. Both parents are alumni, he grew up a MSU fan and coming to games. Plus, he’s from an hour down the road.

This staff has done a nice job having backup plans though. We’ll see which way they pivot.

Cant blame a kid that puts major emphasis on the actual education. Hard to compare a state degree to Duke or NW, and that’s not a shot at MSU.

I don't really see it as a miss on our part. When you're carrying a 35 ACT, you want to be a doctor, and you're getting full ride offers from Northwestern, Duke, and Vanderbilt, loving MSU becomes secondary. I think it says a lot about how much he and his family loves State that we were in it to the 11th hour and he agonized over the decision.

Yes, it is disappointing for sure but, considering this kid seems to be more focused on academics than football, it is understandable. Best of luck to him.

There is a quote allegedly credited to Jerry Tarkanian about a kid that UNLV was recruiting that was offered by Stanford - “There is no way that a kid smart enough to be offered a full scholarship to Stanford would be stupid enough not to accept it, so he could come to UNLV.”

I heard they have a kid from South Alabama that is the back up plan. Pretty fast. About all I know. Ledaryen Craig plus a kid from Magee named Bridges.

Certainly true if he’s 100% med school bound, but there’s just a whole different level of things you get exposed to and have access to at top tier schools. The connections made there can be incredibly valuable, and opportunities can open in really cool, unexpected ways

Not really. I'd probably do the same thing in his situation. It's not like he won't still be a fan of MSU. He's a 3 star player, with the opportunity of a lifetime.

I have plenty of friends that are doctors who have State degrees. Some of which who went to MS JUCOs before attending State.

Academic prestige has always been overvalued to me personally.

If you’re smart and driven it doesn’t matter where you get your degree from. You will be successful.

However, if a getting a degree from a prestigious university is important to the kid, he should go for it.

Has there ever been as much hoopla over an 84 ranked 3* before? Seriously though, if a kid is ranked about this level, there is no way he should sign in the early period. Happens every year where a kid like this will get late offers from p5 schools after they missed on some guys early. Just like the kid from Magee. Nobody has ever heard his name and yesterday he gets offers from us and Auburn. Not even sure if he has a rating. Now his type will most likely have a hard time breaking into the lineup, but he'll get to train in the best facilities and eat at the best training tables for as long as he can handle it.

If this is the story then I wish him the best of luck and hope he stays a fan of State, Bulldog Club member when he is a doc, and visits campus when he can.

Do you mean like getting a Phi Beta Kappa chapter? MSU is always going to struggle in National academic rankings because of the IHL wide low admission requirements. I think Keenum is doing a great job in raising our profile. Got ways to go, but headed in right direction.

It does depend on where you end up living and working when you graduate how much it helps you. If you play football at Miss State or Ole Miss people in the state know who you are and finding a good job is a lot easier. There are a lot of alumni running big companies in Mississippi. Not saying he wants to work in Miss I don't know but most companies are just looking for degrees.

Since you’ve taken to telling people to stop posting about certain topics, you’ll never be in his situation.

Our Admission Standards are low because Mississippi State University is “The People’s University”. You can’t claim that title and set up any level of exclusivity standards, including admission standards.

I’m as strict a believer in education as anybody but sounds like he needs to

choose between playing football or not. With today’s current demands of football players year round, it’s hard to see anyone juggling both. But if he can, more power to him.

Academic prestige can be overrated and yes there are many doctors that went to state but if you don't believe that a degree from Northwestern is far more valuable and will create many more opportunities for him, I don't know what else to tell you. This isn't a dig at state.

Absolutely. But in the business world, if you are on Linked In, you will see CEOs, Presidents, Executive VPs, etc., with MBAs from Colleges and Universities people have never heard of because they don’t even have Athletics or have very limited Men’s and Women’s sports programs. Didn’t we just recently have a Rhodes Scholar? Isn’t that a pretty exclusive club with limited acceptance.?

Yes, an MBA from Vanderbilt is a huge Resume enhancement, but exceptional students at even Ole Miss can reach high goals. The thing is, the kid can play on a very good football team at Northwestern and still get a prestigious degree. Vanderbilt, he can do one but not the other. As soon as Cutcliffe leaves Duke they will be back to Vandy level football.

Same admission requirements as Ole Miss, “The Harvard of the South”.

Steering this back towards football, I couldn't find any rankings on either of those guys but what read states the kid from Baker High or whatever down towards Mobile is 6'2" and runs a faster time than the 4 star back we got committed from Louisiana. Seems like a long DB that is that fast would be

Agree with all, but we are talking a FREE education from that particular prestigious university. Hard to turn that away, especially if you are realistic about your chances to make it to the NFL.

Good point, but it also depends on if his academics command a full scholarship. If so, yeah, he needs to make a decision because his football future would be better served at MSU.

That’s how I see it. I want players passionate about football.

I want players who dream of the NFL. I want players who eat, sleep, and drink football. That’s not to say I don’t want them getting a good education along the way but coaches and jobs are judged on winning. Just the nature of the beast.

Serious question. If the academic reputation angle is the most important factor for Johnson why not just stick with the Naval Academy? You can't really get a better education than Annapolis. Is it the military obligation that's the issue going there?

Except we didn't struggle in those rankings until Keenum became president. We did just fine in them for 20+ years.

in the medical field it won’t matter if he goes to duke unless he wants to practice at a brand name institution and not in Mississippi. If he’s getting a free ride then why not if he likes it but if he is paying for it research suggests it’s not worth it. The reality is that just like football, if you’re good enough it doesn’t matter where you go.
