We’d be better off going through a couple years, taking our lumps with a new, fiery, energetic coach that can recruit.
Hell we endured R Ray, we can endure anything.

Right now according to Sixpack there’s a laundry list of coaches to fire AND the athletic director. Better be drumming up some serious cash for all these buy outs.

So all of you smart fans on here disagreeing with this are ok going with going to the Tournament just once in 6 years of a coaches tenure?
That to me is pretty damn dumb. Also it says you just don’t really give a 17 !

Not trying to defend Howland as I tend to find myself in the “move on from him” camp, but holding year 1 and probably 2 against him with the horrendous roster he walked into is unfair to say the least.

If we don’t make the NCAA Tournament next year, it’s time to move on from Howland. I feel like we’re stuck in some sort of basketball purgatory. Same thing every year.

GameStop literally translates to “fire coach” so hopefully someone in the state with a recent windfall will cover all these hires we need to make.

I’m not happy with only one tourney and I do get frustrated with the disappointing losses. I’m also not going to hold this year against him because I think he has overall done a good job for the year. This team looks to have a lot of potential for next year and I want to see it. To me next year is the year. No tourney no job.

I said this before,we have players that play when they wanna play. A lot of that is on Howland , but he finally sat a few starters. Look at the effort in first half when down 15-4 to halftime with several starters sitting multiple minutes. We played with more effort. Cut it to 3 at half.
Howland’s job is to coach and put us in position and to run an offense and defense that makes a difference. Out of time outs we have been strong on offensive play calls to get easy buckets or to play aggressively on the D end but we have too many lapses in game that kill us. Again I don’t know the answer but at some point in time players have to make plays but coaching needs to have a better pulse on who should be attempting these plays even if we lose. We need more fight for 40 minutes and we damn sure need better from players and staff. How many more games do we shoot ourselves in the foot?

18 of those teams had 2 fewer conference games, 3 of the remaining 7 were the Rick Ray disaster and 4 of them were Howland's teams.

Unless we totally fall apart Howland is hear next year. Next year is do or die for him.

it’s really not the effort in the last two games that’s the issue. Those are good teams we played and had a decent chance at winning both on the road. It’s games like Texas A&M/Ole Miss that are problems.

Are you kidding me with this Rick Ray crap? We simply did not endure the blow from Rick Ray yet. We had a 5 seed team two years ago, and couldn’t even get 10,000 to the hump on a Saturday. That’s the best team we have had since 07-08. Yet even that couldn’t generate much excitement. We are still paying hard for that terrible, lazy *** hire. Stricklin should have been fired immediately after.

You messed up. Don’t get on a MSU message board and demand more than mediocrity from a coach. Expectations tend to rile up the natives.

We lost by 3 on the road to a comfortably ranked team.
Sucks that we lost, but it was hardly egregious.

I think I would give him one more year. He is close to retiring anyway, plus our history sucks, look at our past coaches records and it tells the story of me being correct. But most Sec programs suck as well, it's just a bad basketball conference and always will.

MSU would have been in the tourney last season. Your perception of the program is flawed.

We'd have had to win at least 2 games in the SEC tourney to give us a chance. We had a NET in the 50s. According to bracket matrix and their 102 bracket projections, only 5 had us in. And the top ones didn't even have us in the Next 4 out category.

17, we have been rebuilding for years! Enough of that ****.

The fact that we **** the bed last year when we should have been good does not make this year not a rebuilding year. Entirely fair to blame Howland for last year. We were good the year before that and just **** the bed in the tournament, which happens. This is probably his best coaching job yet at State and this year is a pleasant surprise. Had he just been safely in the tournament last year when it was shut down, this year would feel a lot different. It'd be us showing a much higher floor in a rebuilding year. But people aren't going to be happy with it because they want him to basically make up for last year, which is unfortunately not how it works.

Being a "baseball school" and in the SEC (football focused), our limitations are somewhat obvious nevermind the horrible fan support the team received for years leading up to the pandemic.

The premise that MSU should be dominating in basketball is just ridiculous. Last year was one of those special years, where our team could have put together a nice run like they do every few years. First time to have a 1st round SEC tourney bye in awhile, considered a shoe-in for the NCAA with NBA talent. COVID happened, no tourney, most of our starters left...rebuild.

Hopefully, Iverson and Stewart stay next season.

OK let's clarify that a bit, WERE NOT considered a shoe-in for the NCAA tourney. We were projected to miss the tourney unless we won a couple of games in the SECT and that chronic underachievement is a big part of the issue with having 3 NBA guys on the team last year.

This is where we are among the power conferences. 11 of 14 SEC schools have played on the second weekend of the tourney more recently than we have. None any longer ago.

My high expectations are falling every year right alongside my interest. Can't blame Howland for something that's been happening for over a decade now for me personally.

He should get one more year with this roster. He's won 20 games the last three seasons. We are 12 points from being 7-2 in conference this year (Kentucky, Texas A&M and Tennessee). Alabama is winning conference games by 16 pts a game. We played them to an 8 point loss on the road and probably should have won the game. With the exception of the Ole Miss game, we have been in every game in the final 4:00 minutes.

I agree it is frustrating at times to watch them because of their inconsistency, but when they are on, it is evident that they can play with anyone. Our next 4 conference games are very winnable (@Arkansas, @SC, LSU, Auburn). We currently sit tied for 8th in conference with Auburn. Win the next 4 or 3 of the next 4 and we are most likely top 5 in conference.

Some of you who are bitching about Cohen's inability to hire coaches are now advocating to giving him another bite at the apple by firing Howland and hiring a new basketball coach. What kind of sense does that make? If he doesn't make the tourney this year or next year, then it is probably time to move on from Howland. But until then, let the season play out.

Its flat-out unbelievable that Arkansas hasn’t been to the Sweet 16 in a quarter century. Had no idea it had been that long for them.
