Small businesses, especially restaurants, are starving to death. It was just a matter of time before they turned on one another to try and survive.

^^ This. And let's be honest, this market was very saturated, there were a whole lot of crappy restaurants out there, every Tom, Dick and Harry wanted to run one if they could cook a certain dish. The weak ones are getting weeded out right now.

Meanwhile, Kroger will have 500 people inside today because of a pending 1 inch of snow.

And it's not just the "weak" restaurants that are falling to the wayside, it's most/all restaurants that don't have some kind of corporate backing or multiple locations. Starkville is down to Oby's, 2 Bros, Bin 612 and the Mexican restaurants.

Dave will be on his way out soon after this little stunt.

Calling Dave’s a “restaurant” is a little misleading. Yeah, they make a nice pie, but that’a never where they made their real money. If they tried to be exclusively a restaurant that closed at 9:30 every night and had no live music, etc., they would have shut down 20 years ago.

Hobies ain’t beating Dave’s on anything to do with food.

1 location
2 Hobie didn’t shut down for a year
3 Hobie isn’t beating his chest abt morality and responsibility while he bumps the bugar sugar in the kitchen (I’m guessing)

Was he supposed to take the PPE money and not adhere to covid protocols? Or maybe you wanted him to not take the PPE money and also not adhere to covid protocols or not take the money and adhere to protocols? Which is the option you would prefer a small business owner do so that he might not lose your cancel culture business you never gave him anyways?

Agree, and I was talking more in general than about this specific comparison.

Of course, it's the service that puts Dave's in the lower tier, IMO.

Either guy can do whatever they want with their private business and own whatever comes with it. I’ve always loved Dave’s and haven’t been to Hobie’s but once I believe. I don’t know all the ends and outs but Dave Hood looks awful doing this. It’s easy to be the closed down guy when you have an 800 square foot ******** (and I love that place). His lease can’t be more than 28 cents. Hobie, on the other hand, has an albatross of a lease and is likely under significantly more financial stress to scratch out what he can to make a living. So 17 Dave for giving him grief. A little added background that I have no idea if it plays in to or not is the state theatre has a long history of no one being able to make a dime there. The one guy who made money prior to Hobie getting it was Dave Hood. He let it go because I assume he competed with himself a bit and probably got tired of it. I assume he let go of the big overhead for the small gold mine. This has been a brutal time in the industry for everyone and I hate to see the stress play out publicly between 2 local business that both deserve a slice of the pie in town.

This is pretty off. There are plenty of places still open, The Camphouse, Stromboli's, Commodore Bob's, Boardtown Pizza, WTF, all still open among others.

I don't have a dog in the fight but if that's your train of thought there's a lot of places you won't be going besides Dave's. Not sure where you're getting "year long" from either.

Guess I missed where covid protocols called for restaurants to completely shut down. Judging from all the restaurants I've eaten at, takeout only at first but in house for months, I'm not the only one.

Daves tweet was sent late at night and and was deleted by early the next morning with Dave admitting he could have handled this much better in a separate tweet. Ive been to Dave's a couple of times since he reopened and its obvious he is taking covid very seriously. It feels like a different place in there. In some regards it may be overkill, but you cant fault the guy for wanting to protect his employees and customers while trying to keep a business afloat. I think doing so has put a tremendous strain on business. Its fair to say Dave jumped the gun in speaking out about another bar in town... its just a bad look and could have been handled in better way... but Daves a good guy. He's always ran a good business, he has some of the best pizza around and has been a huge part of fostering what little music scene Starkville has had. I hope people realize that and support him when they can. None of these businesses or restaurants are out of the woods yet, so Im hoping the best for all of them over the next few months.

I don't think there's much doubt he could have handled it a LOT better. I'm very sympathetic to anyone in the restaurant or bar business in this pandemic and I do my part to frequent the ones I like as often as I can. But he crossed a line that shouldn't be crossed with that tweet.

Hobies on Main - restaurant/bar downtown in old state theater building. I believe he started with just part of it, but eventually took over the whole thing. Not sure if he kept all of it after covid started or what.

He definitely crossed a line and looks like a ********. That said, even if some of his stress is self inflicted, this has been a difficult time for restaurants/bars and I'd be willing to cut people in general, and especially restaurant/bar owners some slack on being a ******** as long as they own up to it and apologize.

Not relevant to me because I'm unfortunately never in starkville and when I do get there again, I'll be looking for Stromboli's rather than Dave's, but if I were looking for Dave's I certainly wouldn't let him being a ******** for a moment stop me.

Thanks. Never knew him personally, but I think we were around the same class. And I haven’t been to SVille in 15 yrs. ...and on the opposite end, it was Bully3 to me. Dave’s to my wife.
