Convince me since he couldn't win in the NFL.

Not with the current roster. Our guys play hard and he would win more games but giving your all doesn't necessarily beat Bama or Clemson even with Saban as our coach.

Negative. Sylvester Croom beat Saban year 1 when Saban had mediocre talent. Not to say that he wouldn’t have beat Croom 9 out of 10 if you replayed that game 9 more times, but he wouldn’t beat a Clemson, Ohio State, or Notre Dame twice with this team or any team of the past 3 or 4 years.

Saban is a good coach. Saban is the best ever at building a roster.

Totally agree. Yes, Saban is a good coach and has become better as he has finally been willing to bring in offensive staff to evolve his offense over the last several years. But, let there be no doubt, Saban wins at the level he does because he is basically 1 or 2 in national recruiting EVERY year. He normally signs more 5 stars in ONE recruiting cycle than we have in the entire history of our program. If we went out on the playground and I got to pick my entire team before you got to pick your first player then it shouldn't be very surprising that I beat you pretty bad every time we play. That is essentially the comparison when you look at the Alabama talent under Saban versus the MSU talent or really any of the talent on the bottom half teams of the SEC.

This is so over played.

Does bama pay? Yes.
Does ole miss pay? Yes.
Does MSU pay? Yes.

Do we pay as much as others? Probably not but also depends.

If you had zero ties to a university and you got offered $15k to go to Alabama and $20k to go to MSU and you were a 5 star trying to make it to the nfl, would you pick bama or MSU?

Most would pick bama for less money Bc of history, coach, nfl, etc.

He would max out our talent, similarly to Dom Merlot. How far he would take us would depend strictly on recruiting. And it's all about the brand at this point, so yeah, Saban would probably recruit well based on his name alone. He would not get Alabama level recruiting classes, because they are better facility wise and fan buy-in wise, but we'd get in the Top 15 routinely so we'd be in the discussion. I see him locking down Mississippi talent and then also getting the overlooked guys, essentially just like Danny but he'd sign the C.J. Johnsons, Jermaine Whiteheads, etc. And there wouldn't be much flipmas to Ole Miss. He'd also lock down the JUCOs.

Are you suggesting saban couldn’t beat Clemson, Ohio state, Notre Dame 4 to 5 times out of 10 in a given year?

If Saban has better talent, he would win 90% of time... if he has equal talent, less than 50%.... if he has less talent 10%.... he is not a great coach, he hires great coaches.... he is a great recruiter.

I believe that about Bear Bryant but not Saban. Bryant was another breed of coach. What he did at Texas A&M was legendary. What Saban has done is thanks to boosters. Not sayin' Bear didn't have help from boosters at bama though.

And this is so overplayed. All SEC schools put players in the NFL making great money depending on ability. Most players with no ties whatsoever to a school will go to the highest bidder. Particularly ones coming from poverty level families.

One thing that Bryant and Saban have in common (among many) is that both CONTROL the boosters. That's something that can't be done at Aubrin which is why Bama will always dominate that state. Auburn will win one every few years, but it will never be on a consistent basis.

He was at Michigan state for 5 years.
If he was there another 5, he would have had a shot at competing for a national title.

No, he couldn’t recruit it. If he could, he would have won a title (or...maybe even just done better than 7-5 / 8-4) at Michigan State.

To me the big difference is now he has the reputation of being a big game coach that can win Natty's. He didn't have that reputation yet at Michigan State. Now his name alone carries a certain weight that he did not have to his advantage at Michigan State, so I don't think his work there is a fair comparison to what he would do at a non-traditional power if he tried now. Having said that, Saban will be at Bama until he finally retires and goes home.

Because in the NFL everyone gets 5 stars. Saban is an elite recruiter and a good game planner. Bill Belichek is a other-worldly game planner and that's what wins in the league.

I hate agreeing with nimrod but geez man. All it takes is a little common sense to see how this process works. You're clueless. All these players are not out there going to the highest bidder only. Maybe a few here or there, but for the most part they are still choosing schools based on winning, NFL, etc.

This. I was hoping, at this point, we'd get this type of bump with Leach, and I guess we have in a way, we did just sign the best QB and WR class in a long damn time.

In Saban's defense, he had to prove he was a good coach at Michigan State, and he got his big opportunity at LSU.

Some of you throw "boosters" around like cheating is some magic pill to win. That's too simplistic. It's about total buy-in to the program. This is what the big recruiters have - big stadiums, sell-out crowds, towns and fanbases that live/breathe it. Sure you get a Johnny-Come-Lately like SMU or Ole Miss who are dumb and throw stupid money around but they get slapped. The Clemsons, Alabamas, Auburns, LSUs, Georgias have built huge buy-in over the years. Oregon is probably the newest of the bunch, but they've got Nike and 20 years of winning behind them. So there's a little sliding scale in there, but in general a big, rabid fanbase is the answer.

If we want to match that, it's not about cheating. It's about selling out that stadium, donating money and promoting the MSU brand.

Are cheating boosters a part of all this? Sure, but it's all behind the scenes and just a byproduct of the bigger picture. And not nearly all the recruits get paid, it's a small, small percentage of the best players.

Didn't say that. But you guys can't believe MSU is on the same pay scale as Bama and a handful of other top programs? All things being equal well of course selling a winning program is going to win out.

For the few players who do get paid, yeah, all things are generally equal. The money is there from all programs. They aren't signing with schools because they got 15K more.

That kinda nonsense probably happens in Mississippi, matter of fact I know it does. But in the big scheme of things it's just petty egg bowl bullcrap.

He went 9-2. If he was there another 5, he'd have probably gone 9-2 again (or 10-2, once the 12 game schedules started). So yeah, he was EXACTLY like Mullen. Highly doubtful he would have truly competed for a national championship beyond that level. He'd have lost a lot of talent, then built up again. He may have gotten slightly closer, similarly to if Mullen had stayed in 2018. I personally feel like he'd have done better by a game or two than 2014.

If mark dantonio can win 11 plus games in 5 of 9 years, then saban has a damn shot at a national title at the same job.

If you think otherwise, you are stupid, but i think you have proved that already.
