I know some people don’t care about the bowl streak, but I think it’s good for the program to show up as one of the teams with the longest bowl streaks, even if bowls don’t mean what they used to.

Va tech and LSU opting out will move us up two spots on the active bowl streak list. Anybody else above us opting out of a bowl?

ETA: by my count, we will have the eighth longest active bowl streak. And we’ll have that spot alone with SDSU and Washington not playing bowl games. I know that list sort of has an asterisk in it because of this year, but it never hurts to be on it.

Could see the NCAA just not count 2020 season or just add * to team's that don't go this year!

Speaking for myself, I see no asterisk. It's #11 in our streak. We were invited to another bowl game. It requires no more defense or explanation.

mild rant follows...

This is not directed to anyone in this thread or even anyone particular, but I don't understand the self-flagellation some people insist on. It's like they are compelled to pick apart any good thing for us. Diminishing, devaluing, detracting from every positive thing in a perverse penance for... what? Being a State fan?

We are all very aware that there are so many bowl games compared to the past, etc., but it's still better to be in one than not. The US dollar isn't worth what it was worth in 1981 either but I am not turning any of them down if offered.

Agree.

This is really simple and straightforward . . . a college football team either goes to a 2020 bowl or it doesn't.

If the college football team DOES go to a 2020 bowl, then its streak continues.

If the college football team does NOT go to a 2020 bowl, then it will no longer have a streak.

If it has an asterisk on it because of this year, it already had an asterisk because of 2016 so this year didn’t change anything. I would say there are no asterisks either way. All 130 FBS teams play under the same rules. The bowl streak is a measure of ourselves against the other FBS teams who all had the same opportunities we did to go to 11 straight bowl games.

Only two other schools in the SEC has been to 11 consecutive bowl games going back 11 seasons. LSU could be one this season if they were not cheaters or got caught cheating.

Here is the deal. Bowl criteria has been the same over the last 11 years for all college football teams and we have a streak, whereas other teams do not. So yes, it is something. Discounting it is about as legit as Ole Miss talking about the SEC West being down in 1998. If it was so down, why didn't THEY win it and go to Atlanta?

Exactly. All teams are playing under the same rules and circumstances. The bowl will count for the streak - and all other purposes. If we win, that win will be counted the same way it has been.

Agreed. The other criteria this year that must not be forgotten, and is really equal to W-L, is running the COVID gauntlet for 14 weeks and coming out on the other side with a functional team.
