You wanna see receivers who know how to attacks the zone defense, watch KC right now.

After watching some more of our game Saturday, I think a lot of the blame lies with the receivers for having no ability to sit in the holes that exist in all zone defenses

Throwing into 8 man coverage in college football isn’t going to work. Our answer to that look will be to the ball to running backs and letting them chew up yards.

We will not beat that front through the air. We will have to force teams out of it.

I’ll admit I’ve really never watched Leach coach until the LSU game... but I have to think that if playing an 8 man coverage was really the Achilles heel of the air raid then it would have ended Leach a long time ago. Surely he’s had success against a zone at some point.

That's my fear. Cover-8 is going to be a lot tougher to throw into in the SEC than it was in the old Big 12 or PAC-12.

This makes more sense to me than you just can’t throw against cover 8 in college.

The Patriots ran it tonight a lot against Mahommes and it worked for a while. You cant blitz some guys and to a lesser but still significant extent some well coached schemes. A big difference is Mahommes moves in the pocket very well and creates plays with his legs, and he is incredibly patient when there is little to no rush. I dont know if Leach has ever had a true dual threat QB, that would be interesting.

It’s really no different in theory than a team putting 10 guys in the box because they don’t believe you can beat them deep. Teams will sit back on us because they don’t believe we can execute the short game well and put together long drives.

You’ve got to be able to block three with five, and then you’ve got to have some backs that can get extra yards and some receivers that can sit in the holes in the zone and make teams hurt. And you’ve got to have patience from your QB. Breaking an extreme zone like that requires very precise execution, plain and simple. That’s why it’s hard to do. But it can be done.

Sure the run helps but there's plenty of opportunity to exploit an 8 man zone thru the air. Like Leach said today, if he didn't know how to combat an 8 man zone he woulda been outta a job decades ago. Said Oregon ran the same 8 man zone as Washington and he beat Oregon 4 times (shoulda been 6 he said). We'll be alright once the recievers understand it and our Qb reads it better.

That’s what I keep coming back to. If the 8 man zone is a total death sentence for the Air Raid then how has Leach been a successful head coach for almost 20 years? Because while scheme matters, it’s more about execution. Not all zone defenses are created equal, and proper execution can absolutely break a zone.

Not having Kylin and a healthy Austin Williams really hurt our offense. If either one is 100% we win but Leach hasn't had enough time with the backups to replace two huge pieces of his air raid with no notice.

Honestly I look forward to seeing Kylin getting 30 balls in the flats with room to run (and hopefully some WRs laying downfield blocks). And, how about a field goal attempt or two. This game will go fast and points will be precious.

Yeah, I get that having a mobile QB isn’t exactly Leach’s thing, and I should probably just accept that. However, it’s hard to overlook how different the game would’ve looked this past weekend if KJ had even some half-decent wheels.

It’s just an entirely different look when the 11 guys on defense have absolutely zero respect for a QB’s ability to move

I know you are supposed to dance with the one that brought you, but I have to sit on my hands and shut my mouth when I see a team walk up to to line of scrimmage and face a 3 man line when they've got 5 of their own to block those 3 and still throw it short and underneath. A 3 man line is an open invitation to run the ball every play and make them stop you from getting 4+ yds per play if you execute against their 3. Then when they sell out and cheat up for the run, go for the jugular.

Do a little research on Chuck Weatherspoon when he was a running back for U of Houston when they ran the "run and shoot". I'll save you the time, for his career he AVERAGED 8.3 yds per carry on almost 400 attempts w/ 27 TD's. He also had 1,375 reception yds and 8 TD's and was built like a bowling ball not a receiver (5'9" 230#). When defenses backed off to stop the run and shoot they would give the ball to Chuck and he would bust it loose almost every time they did it.

This is the key point. If they drop 8, roll the pocket to the strong side, and take the free 8-9 yards and go out of bounds if nothing comes open.
