Old Bear Bryant used to tell his players the story about him playing a whole game against Tennessee with a broken leg. The purpose of the story was to challenge their toughness so they would play through pain and even injuries.
At MSU we have examples of Football players who played through injuries just as bad as Bear Bryant.
1. NICKOE WHITLEY -
One of our hardest hitting Secondary players in recent memory. Nickoe played almost his entire Senior year with a torn ACL. The dude just put a big brace on his knee and went out and played - it only came out after the Egg Bowl (remember him stripping Bo Wallace, fumbling into the endzone, and being recovered by Jamerson Love).
2. FLYOD "PORKCHOP" WOMMACK-
Massive yet quick footed - Porkchop was a leader and anchor of our Offensive Line. He played the majority of his Senior year with a broken leg - doctors inserted a metal rod into his leg and screwed it to his bone.
3. OMARR CONNER -
Talented athlete...started at QB but was bumped to WR. In 2005 before the Egg Bowl, Conner tore his groin muscle - muscle tore way from the pubis / pubic bone(worst combination of words in the English language "torn" and "groin"), recovery time was supposed to be several weeks. However, Conner desperately wanted to play in the Egg Bowl - so he had multiple procedures where doctors drew blood from his arm, spun the blood in a centrifuge to separate the platelets, the platelet rich blood was then put into a syringe and injected into his groin to speed healing time. Omarr Conner played in the 2005 Egg Bowl catching 4 passes for 69 yards - granted the real hero of the game was RB Jerious Norwood.
Key Note: In 2005 a Bowl Game was not a possibility and it was not Conner's Senior year - and he was not going to he the starting QB that day.
Now let me address Tommy Stevens and his injury riddled 2019 Senior year at MSU. I honestly think that this new nation wide coach's policy on keeping injuries super secret may actually be detrimental to players. I don't know the magnitude of Tommy's injuries in 2019 and I am not going to speculate on them. Therefore, I can only work with the information that I do have access to . He had a big time arm and good mobility for a guy his size, however rough starts would sometimes end his day early (got pulled versus Kansas State and only played the 1st quarter against Auburn) and he missed 4 games in 2019 - Kentucky, LSU, Texas A&M, and the Egg Bowl versus Ole Miss.
And most of my negative view comes from missing that Egg Bowl. Going into that game a "winning season" 6th win was on the line, so was a chance at a Bowl Game, also it was his Senior Day his last time to play in front of a home crowd at Scott Field.
I can't help but to compare current and past players - and I know this might seem unfair to some. Football is different now - players transfer at the drop of a hat, players sit out a season to focus on the NFL Draft or for COVID-19 reasons, coaches leave before Bowl Games.
This is the "new normal" and it really makes me miss the original normal.
