Weird time to release that. Why make people wait, unless you’re not changing anything at all. Which, after reading that, I don’t think he will do anything regarding postponing openings. Hopefully we will get a state-wide mask mandate.

Yea. I think a bunch of teachers started back today. Why not announce a delay last week. This makes me think he doesn’t want to delay but has pressure from everywhere so he’s playing politics with it again. Leading would be awesome right now.

The mask mandate has sure been helpful in Oktibbeha County. The numbers have increased by nearly 50 % in the month since a mask mandate was adopted.

Madison County knew what was up a week ago. This has been coming for awhile.

I hope he moves it back

I think it is smart.

A day late is better than two days late and so forth. We are in unprecedented times and very difficult decisions with big consequences are having to be made.

He’s got a state health officer that won’t stay in his lane and a lot of sincerely hysterical voters. It’s a miracle he hasn’t caved to them yet. Going to be interesting to see how he tries to split the baby. Seems pretty clear he’s not going to cave completely but also seems clear he’s at least going to throw a bone to some people that want him to override local decisions. Guessing he’s going to delay school for older kids in some of the districts without virtual options.

Honest question. And I'm not trying to stir debate or be an *******. But what good (read "advantage") does it do to move the start date back 30 days? The virus will still be here then. There won't be a vaccine discovered and/or available by then.

is it just giving school districts more time to implement a plan of action (which I think most already have ready to go, or should)?

i honestly don't know of any advantages to pushing this back.

I'm trying to see if you know of any and can enlighten me of what they are.

From what I was told by a friend who is in IT sales for a very large corporation, and handles govt accounts for MS, the reason for the delay could be more time to get prepared for virtual learning. Never mind the fact that MS has known about this since March and just now realizing they might need tablets for kids that can't afford them if they want virtual learning to be an option.

My guess is he does it by county/school district. Those with a plan that'll work and low COVID numbers may be allowed to start on time. Others may get pushed back.

From his tweets, pointing out the difference between older and younger kids, I will guess that he will mandate virtual only for grades 7-12 in certain counties, and allow traditional classes for elementary. Also the younger kids need educational supervision during the day, virtual just doesn’t work with so many working parents.

Our governor just put out basic guidelines that needed to Be followed and allowed the districts to do what was best for them, within those guidelines.

I.e., Mound Bayou is a lot different than Madison. Not sure how you can dictate what is best for an entire state as a whole.

The state wide mask mandate that has been enforced in California since June has been kicking *** as well. To be honest I live in Rankin and the mandate has not been that bad. Only if you are going shopping. You don't even need it to go pay for gas unless the store requires it. I put it on when I walk in and take it off as soon as I am out the door.

Sounds like a very good idea to me.
