My question is when will the Democratic party change their name? Their history has its own scars

A resolution was introduced in the House yesterday to force them to do just that sighting their long history of siding on the side of slavery and racism.

So to be clear, you follow a strict policy of never even forming an opinion on anything that doesnt immediately and directly affect you?

If thst is how you live, its 17ing impressive and you are in a class by yourself.
I dont think ive ever met someone who hasn't formed an opinion on something that doesn't immediately directly affect them.
People form opinions on a vegan relative or a child abusing neighbor, yet since neither affects you, you wouldn't.
Wow.

A vegan relative? No, why would I care about that?

A child abusing neighbor? Of course I'm going to care if people are getting hurt. That's not an analogy to this situation though.

I'm just calling out the selective fauxrage here. Nobody here actually has any investment - financial, emotional, or otherwise - in what the University of Kentucky calls its buildings. It's a smokescreen for some people's concern that big, bad liberal boogeymen are taking away things that they care about, even though in this instance it's not something they actually care about or have any reason to care about. This is University of Kentucky employees asking the university to consider a name change, a completely internal matter to that community, and I'll be fine with whatever they choose. It's their business, and they have no need for outside instigators to get involved.

Now if anyone here is extremely passionate about building names, and keeps a big database as a hobby and tracks all this stuff, then OK maybe you do have some kind of emotional investment. But I don't think that's the case here. Buildings and arenas change names all the time for a wide variety of reasons, and you only happened to hear about this one because UK is a basketball powerhouse and you care about college sports. How many college buildings get new names every year across the country, for any wide variety of reasons including ones like this, that you never care about?

I'm reminded of around 10 years ago when some of my friends and coworkers decided to boycott Chick-fil-A over their anti-gay marriage stance. I didn't join the boycott, not because I agreed with them - as a Christian, I find any opposition to LGBT equality to be morally reprehensible. But because it just seemed silly to single out one particular restaurant whose views I happened to know about. In order for this boycott to make logical sense, I would need to seek out opinions on the issue from every restaurant I ever entered. Can you imagine walking to a hostess stand and asking about the owner's beliefs about gay marriage before committing to eating there? I'd certainly be disinvited from my weekly lunch group at work. And as an additional wrinkle, shouldn't I care about employees and franchisees of Chick-fil-A who might agree with me on the issue but still be negatively affected by a boycott?

Ultimately, I couldn't justify getting too upset with Chick-fil-A then, as I didn't keep track of any other restaurant's feelings on the issue, and it's silly to get worked up over a single arena changing its name when you ever care about any other building doing it.

I am not saying you should have an opinion on a vegan relative, it was just an example because many people have opinions on it.
As for the child abusing neighbor, why do you care?...it doesn't affect you at all. Based on your vomment earlier in the thread, you wouldn't care if the parent bests on their kid.

Claiming the analogy doesn't apply doesnt actually work since it does apply. Its just inconvenient since to be consistent you have to not have an opinion on child abuse.

Same goes for if Nebraska legislature voted to arrest homosexuals for being gay. It doesn't affect you, so you would have no opinion on the issue.

This could go on and on with examples that you obviously have an opinion on and its totally justifiable to have an opinion on.

The same applies here with Rupp Arena.
Again though, i would be interested to see how such a conclusion was drawn.

I hope that spelling was intentional, because it was probably well-deserved.

The second post is clarifying the first one. I will still care about things that don't affect me if other people are getting hurt and didn't mean to imply otherwise.

I just don't think that what other universities name their buildings is something to get worked up over, especially when stuff like this happens all the time and no one knows or cares. Just like I didn't think Chick-fil-A's position on gay marriage was worth getting worked up over.

whoever downvoted this...you care to prove me wrong?
You aren’t wrong. And neither am I when I say the reason the South started voting Republican nationally after 1964 was because of racism.

Exactly. I mean what are the chances MSU would start getting petitions to change the names of buildings that people know and love just because the people they are named after were out of step with morals of today. IT's preposterous to even think about. It's not like you are being a dumbass and deliberately missing why people might think what is happening at UK is a preview of what might happen at MSU. All the people we have named things after on MSU's campus certainly had views on things like race and homosexuality that will be in line with the general consensus on those issues today.

Shhhhhhh, that man doesn’t want to talk about 60’s realignment, Nixon’s Southern Strategy, Strom Thurmond, or any of the other 60’s Democrats that became Republicans in the 70’s & 80’s.

It would break his heart... erm... narrative.

How many knew that his "name has come to stand for racism and exclusion"? I certainly didn't.

They’ve always felt that way. Football and Basketball players probably think radically different than you. They have since the 1960’s. You probably liked OJ because he was a good one unlike that that Jim Brown. See what happened there. My idea of a snowflake is someone that melts when an opposing view is put before them. That’s you. I don’t agree with Toby Keith’s politics, but I love this bar, and I’d love to have a drink with him. I’m not a huge fan of some of Tom Selleck’s views but I’d love to cruise around Hawaii in a red Ferrari with him. On the other side I hate Rage Against The Machine’s politics, but I will blast some Bombtrack. Guess I’m just not a snowflake.

Anyone who uses this much verbiage to explain how they are not a “snowflake” is a super secret snowflake.

A bonafide member of the Triple S’s.

Thanks for your attempt.

It aligns with your Democrat philosophy of accusing the opposition of what you actually are.

Maybe you are just a snowbird, I don’t know. How’s Florida?

I’m not cancelling people because of their politics. I’m not the one bitching about the board not agreeing with me anymore. I’ve been here for 16 years. I was here when the entire board would all **** on libtards, hell Mutt rotated signatures about it, and we never came to the rescue. We could just let the political threads go there way, sometimes we engaged when something seemed worth a **** for discussion, but typically it was cut off after 20 posts. With no sports the board has a bigger leash hopefully not for long. But the funniest thing to me is all of the right wingers bitching because of all of the liberals on the board. We listened to your conversations for all these years without threatening to leave or disown the university but now when 30% of the board has a different perspective, people can’t take it and have to leave. You tell me, who is thin skinned?

I’ve come to the realization that the ideals of these academic institutions that we, as fans, support don’t line up with my own.

I’ve been an adamant state fan my whole life, but with the lack of sports and the political stances of our University’s leaders, I’m losing interest.

Maybe I’ll change my mind once we get back to normal, but right now, I don’t have much give a dam*.

Bye.

1. Never mentioned canceling any people.

2. Never mentioned the board not agreeing with me. I don’t care.

I simply stated that I do not agree with our university’s current leadership. That is the basis of my original post. You have skewed it to fit what you want it to say.

1. You are correct. Your comment about losing interest just seemed in line with some of the other posts I’ve seen on here recently about not caring about MSU sports. Reading your post from a different perspective I guess it’s not directly tied to MSU athletics.
2. Wasn’t directed specifically to you, it’s more about the attack of anyone with a left of right opinion lately letting our opinion be known. It was just a stream of thought approach about how maddening the board has become lately and it tied into the whole cancel/ snowflake/can’t listen to the other side’s opinion dialogue that was presented in this section of the thread.

Sorry for the reading comprehension fail on #1 for you. Carry on and Cheers!

The faculty of the University of Kentucky's African American and Africana Studies program has asked UK president Eli Capilouto to change the name of Rupp Arena because the legendary basketball coach's name "has come to stand for racism and exclusion" and "alienates Black students, fans, and attendees."

Capilouto should get the individual names of these "faculty" members and meet with each one of them individually in his office.

At the meeting, he should ask the individual the following questions:
- Specifically, in sufficient detail, how has Rupp's name come to stand for racism and exclusion?
- Specifically, in sufficient detail, how does Rupp's name alienate black students, fans and attendees?
- Can you give me the names of any black students, fans and/or attendees that have been alienated by Rupp's name?

Also, I'd have a media team present at the meeting recording the entire interview.

If the individual refused to answer the questions, then I would tell him/her that he/she apparently has no real problem with Rupp's name.

I would bet that each of these individuals would fold up like a cheap tent if he/she had to get into the details of his/her position and be individually responsible for what he/she says.

People like this typically gather into a group where they feel safe.

I grew up in Starkville and remember the anger when Rupp got cowbells outlawed at basketball games. The students protested before the next home game against KY with signs saying "Adolph Hitler and Adolph Rupp" and carried a skunk in a coffin which was put under the opposing team's seats.
