The faculty of the University of Kentucky's African American and Africana Studies program has asked UK president Eli Capilouto to change the name of Rupp Arena because the legendary basketball coach's name "has come to stand for racism and exclusion" and "alienates Black students, fans, and attendees."

The Arena of Kentucky Basketball

Seems safe

Cow dogs everywhere secretly hate MSU. There will be an uprising in the future.

Let’s call it the Kentucky safe space for spineless liberals. Is that too long?

Maybe just stop playing college basketball altogether. That’ll solve the problem.

I’ve come to the realization that the ideals of these academic institutions that we, as fans, support don’t line up with my own.

I’ve been an adamant state fan my whole life, but with the lack of sports and the political stances of our University’s leaders, I’m losing interest.

Maybe I’ll change my mind once we get back to normal, but right now, I don’t have much give a dam*.

Why does anyone on this thread care what the University of Kentucky decides to name its arena? They can call it whatever they want to call it.

I challenge anyone upset about this to name 7 SEC basketball arenas other than the Hump and Rupp. I bet you couldn't.

About UK changing an arena name. I think people are sick of people’s feigned oppression and their bitching about stuff that happened before they were born and hasn’t negatively affected them anyway.

They have become the thing they claim to hate.

Because it's never going to end. The perpetual victim crowd will always find something to be offended by. You didn't think just because the flag was changed and some statues came down they were going to go skipping off into the sunset content in life? Oh no. Now that they got all that changed it's time to be offended by something else. Someone's eighth cousin twice removed back in 1802 did something so now they just can't function in life until a building name is changed.

Sounds like you're a victim getting offended over what Kentucky's basketball arena is named. Why do you think it's any of your business what an arena for a team you don't like is called? Who the hell are you to dictate what the University of Kentucky can and can't call it's facilities?

Where did I say it was my business? All I did was state a fact that nothing is ever good enough. The victim crowd will always find something to be a victim of.

The only "victim crowd" in this story is a bunch of Mississippi State fans getting their feelings hurt over the idea of the University of Kentucky hypothetically changing the name of its arena, even though it doesn't affect any of them in any way, and it's not like they know more than a handful of college basketball arena names anyway.

Coach Rupp has come to stand for racism and exclusion and the name alienates black students and fans?
Does it alienate black students and fans?...i don't know how that can be measured very accurately. Does a survey go out to black students and fans and ask them if they dont attend, is it because of the building name?
I would think the ticket pricing and scarcity would alienate black(and white) fans more frequently than the name.

I'm not upset, I just read this and wonder at what point will there be balance.
I genuinely am interested to see data on how the professors' conclusion was drawn too. It'd make for some interesting reading.

How dare these people having opinions different from your own.**

What are you talking about? I don't think I could possibly be more clear about the fact that I don't get an opinion on what the University of Kentucky names its arena because I'm not a fan, student, or employee of the university, nor do I have any other connection that would entitle me to one.

It's hilarious that the same people getting all hot and bothered about this because "IT DOESN'T AFFECT ANYONE'S LIVE!!" are people whose lives aren't affected. Keep it, change it, whatever - I'll never care, and I'm right not to care because it will never make any noticeable difference in my life. The same goes for all the whiny babies on this thread who don't even see the irony of their posts.

Didnt anyone here read Infinite Jest? Subsidized time, bitches: Rename that M17er every year. Rename everything every 17ing year, even the year itself. There is a **** ton of money to be made. Highest bidder. Sure, I will miss calling it the Star Package Store Pavillion once the Year of the Whopper ends, but I cant wait to see a game at the Tucks Medicated Pad Pavillion.

So to be clear, you follow a strict policy of never even forming an opinion on anything that doesnt immediately and directly affect you?

If thst is how you live, its 17ing impressive and you are in a class by yourself.
I dont think ive ever met someone who hasn't formed an opinion on something that doesn't immediately directly affect them.
People form opinions on a vegan relative or a child abusing neighbor, yet since neither affects you, you wouldn't.
Wow.

Lets be honest, you and anyone else tuned into the world, know that this isnt just about Rupp Arena. Its about the larger change across the country to fix, remove, and abolish anything or any name that has a history that might be offensive. And in some cases Im on board with those changes and in others it seems like a gross over correction and/or pandering. But both sides have valid points as to how far we should go in making these changes so those are questions worth asking. As a one off name change, no one cares except Kentucky fans, what they call the arena, but we all know the story leading up to this so to feign ignorance as to why someone cares is disingenuous.

They’ve always felt that way. Football and Basketball players probably think radically different than you. They have since the 1960’s. You probably liked OJ because he was a good one unlike that that Jim Brown. See what happened there. My idea of a snowflake is someone that melts when an opposing view is put before them. That’s you. I don’t agree with Toby Keith’s politics, but I love this bar, and I’d love to have a drink with him. I’m not a huge fan of some of Tom Selleck’s views but I’d love to cruise around Hawaii in a red Ferrari with him. On the other side I hate Rage Against The Machine’s politics, but I will blast some Bombtrack. Guess I’m just not a snowflake.
