It's always fascinating to me how Republicans love to complain where all the moderate/Blue Dog Democrats have gone. The answer is easy - whenever there is a moderate Democrat in Congress (such as Jones), Republicans hate them anyway and paint them as just as must of a socialist as any other Democrat, and then they lose reelection.

Whenever there's a wave election like 2010 or 2014, it's largely not liberal Democrats losing reelection and getting replaced by Republicans, it's moderates. For example, 35 Democrats voted against the Affordable Care Act and almost all of them were thrown out in the 2010 midterms anyway and replaced with Republicans. Jones is by all rankings the 2nd or 3rd most centrist Democratic Senator, and yet he's the only one who stands any real chance of getting beat this year, which will push the overall caucus further to the Left, just like what has happened to the House Democrats over the last decade.

Doug Jones is a "centrist" that still thinks abortions shouldn't have any limits after the 20th week of gestation and criticized Trump for pulling back Obama era guidance prohibiting schools from having sex specific locker rooms. That's the type of centrist the democrats ran in Alabama.

I don't know that the loss of almost all centrist legislators is something that is a criticism of democrats versus an emergent feature of our political system, but it's also not true that the reason centrist democrats no longer exist is because they keep losing purple states to republicans.

Doug Jones did not support Kavanaugh despite every rational person seeing through the sham that was Blassey-Ford. If you joined in that witch hunt you will never get my vote. It’s a Rorschach test for me.

A rational person wouldn’t use the Kavanaugh vote as a litmus test for supporting a candidate.

Surprised by Huntsville. Lot of Auburn engineers up there. What say you RocketDawg?
Here's the breakdown of Madison County (Huntsville), unofficially as I see it.

35% Fiscal/Defense Republicans - Not liberal or Rockefeller Republicans, but they're the kind who don't buy into the Conservative Christian branch of the GOP, even if they are Christians. They like seeing their Congressmen pumping the Defense industry and NASA. Many of these are transplants from more liberal parts of the country who took a job for a defense contractor. They voted against Roy Moore by a 60-40 margin not only in 2017 but every time he ran for the Supreme Court. More likely to have voted for Romney in '12 than Trump in '16. If they voted for Trump, it was probably reluctantly and they would have gone for Rubio or Cruz in the primary. Tend to be reasonable and see Sessions as doing the right thing by recusing himself as AG. Also likely to see Tuberville as a dumbass.
30% Hardcore Team R - They'll vote for whatever the Republican Party puts on the table. Lots of the long-timers are in this group. Were Democrats or would have been prior to 1994. Some here wouldn't have voted for Tuberville because he was at Auburn, but they'll go 100% for him in November.
25% Generic Democrat - They love Doug Jones, Nancy Pelosi, Obama, Hillary, etc.
10% Progressives - A lot of the younger transplant crowd. Like Bernie and AOC. Live near downtown and in Five Points. When people say Huntsville is pretty liberal, it's because of this group, even though it's fairly small still. They also say it's liberal because there are Republicans who won't vote for someone like Moore.

I don’t trust the judgment of anyone who looked at the evidence, or complete lack thereof and didn’t walk away saying the democrat party is corrupt beyond repair. I used to be a very moderate conservative, but that sham pushed me to the right. They can’t even prove that he and Blassey-Ford were ever in the same location and his reputation was smeared. For what? He’s not even that conservative of a justice. It was a complete embarrassment and it gets even worse considering that there are actually credible claims against Biden and the party is completely ignoring them.

Both sides have their ideologically whacko elements that get all the attention, but policies actually implemented tend to be similar. Republican control of both houses and the presidency have not resulted in blanket abortion bans or permitted companies to dump toxic waste wherever they want, and similar level of Democratic Party control has not resulted in socialized medicine and outlawing billionaires.

On the abortion thing, it's not from lack of trying. Thankfully the still mostly independent judiciary has stopped them.

As for the environment, you might want to take a better look at all the ways this administration is making it easier for companies to pollute.

The Trump Administration Is Reversing 100 Environmental Rules. Here’s the Full List: "...his administration has weakened Obama-era limits on planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and from cars and trucks, and rolled back many more rules governing clean air, water and toxic chemicals."

Trump Administration Cuts Back Federal Protections For Streams And Wetlands: "The biggest change is a controversial move to roll back federal limits on pollution in wetlands and smaller waterways that were introduced less than five years ago by President Barack Obama."

Trump eases environmental rules during pandemic: "The EPA this spring also has published rules on air, water and fuel that scrap the work of the Obama administration. Last Thursday, it abandoned oversight of perchlorate in drinking water, dropping its stance on a chemical — used in munitions and rocket fuel — that can harm infants’ brains."

Smeared? He's now at the very top of his profession, and his family stood by his side. He suffered virtually no consequences.

Complete nonsense, unless by "that conservative," you mean "the most conservative."

I would change "actually" to "equally," but I mostly agree with you there.

I would kind of expect opposing parties to reverse things that prior parties did that they don't believe in. Happens all the time. Whether they should believe in them or not, who knows, but that they are doing it is just politics as usual.

On a surface level, I guess that argument makes sense. But when you look at what this administration is actually doing to the environment (or more accurately, what it's allowing private companies to do to the environment), it's not really "politics as usual."

The numbers are pure guesses (it's probably closer to 30/25/25/10 with the last 10% being undecided folks). The county is definitely Republican, but it is a sort of Republican that is not like the rest of the state. Take presidential elections:
Madison County
2016:
Trump - 54.8%
Clinton - 38.5%
Other - 6.8%
2012:
Romney - 58.5%
Obama - 39.9%
Other - 1.6%
2012 Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice:
Moore - 48%
Vance - 52%

Alabama
2016:
Trump - 62.1%
Cilnton - 34.4%
Other - 3.5%
2012:
Romney - 60.6%
Obama - 38.4%
Other - 1.1%
2012 Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice:
Moore - 51.8%
Vance - 48.2%

They are rolling back Obama era regulations, many that were abuses of power themselves (hello, clean power rule). It's not like we were in some environmental hellscape in 2008. It was still really expensive and painful to do anything then too.

Kavanaugh is a pretty good litmus test on how partisan somebody has become. He was a clearly qualified judge that centrists would have usually voted for up until Bush II.

Probably a fair assessment. Sessions pretty much won by a landslide in Madison County, but nowhere else. He squeaked by in Mobile, and only won his home county by 30-something votes. Huntsville is fairly liberal compared to the rest of the state, but still pretty conservative.

I can't believe our next senator will be an ex-football coach ....

I cycle among the following: Ronald Reagan, Lando Calrissian (or, if I'm feeling especially festive, Baron Landonis Balthazar Calrissian, III), Hon. John Blutarsky, Coriolanus Snow, Leslie Knope. I occasionally throw in a "Luscious Redhead" or "Freckled Cleavage" where levity takes over. I try to get creative with it. I believe strongly in the right to vote and the responsibility to exercise that right. I refuse, however, to lower my standards to select unworthy candidates. Therefore, I exercise the right to vote in the manner of a protest. Recently I wrote in "Exquisite Corpse" in a local election where the choice of candidates was a troublingly unqualified dolt and a notorious boozehound.

As I've stated before, the original climate study indicated that there was a greater than 80% chance that human behavior had some impact on global warming. It did not quantify the amount of impact in any way, thus leaving a lot of room for debate about how much money should be spent, and in what way, to stave off this unknown impact. If you implement very painful regulation because you've just decided that whatever it is that you are doing is "worth it", it is not implausible, or even evil, if the ones paying that price decide that it is not "worth it". Lot of gray area. Lot of people asserting that their side is correct. American 2-party system. Business as usual.

In some regards you see this same line of thinking played out with COVID some people willing to do more with less data, others insisting that they'll give up nothing until it is proven to be tragic enough. Tragic enough = whatever happens to move that individual's needle.

When I lived there, I was either working or doing baby/toddler things. Sleeping was not a thing, so I for sure didn't have time to figure out the political climate!

I have neither time nor inclination to list out the links that refute every single point of your post, but this is the gold standard example of how someone can know zero facts about something and still post like they are an expert. But congrats on outing yourself as a complete buffoon. You could’ve just written, “I talk out of my rear end,” and it would’ve sufficed.

Sessions says he's retiring from politics now. I'm sure he's pretty well off, as just about all congressmen are. And they don't make that money from their government salaries.

I voted for Sessions, but I've never been crazy about him. He was just the best of the two in my opinion, which isn't saying much. You never know - Tuberville may be great, but I doubt it.

You do realize that there is an effort to impeach him? Would not be surprised one bit, with a Biden election, that this effort would grow steam with the groundwork that was set in place by the hearings. To say that his reputation was not smeared is at the very least, disingenuous.

They've been out to get Kav for over 20 years.

He had a hand in getting Clinton impeached in the House.
