Has anyone seen the CDC's initial proposed guidelines for opening schools?

Some various recommendations-

- all students, faculty, and visitors must wear masks at all times.
- hot lunch would be prepackaged and cafeterias won't be used in the traditional sense.
- busses need to stagger kids for distancing.
- locker use needs to have times to ensure staggering of use for distancing.
- no extracurricular activities like band, plays, choir, etc etc.
- NO ATHLETICS.

Obviously there are a lot more recommendations and a lot more detail to each recommendation.
The initial draft was released monday(I think?) and will be fought over and negotiated over by the powers that be. So maybe school sports will still happen. Or maybe it'll be a state by state decision.
But as of now, the initial recommendations for re-opening schools this fall isn to not have sports.

if you’re gonna cram a bunch of kids into classrooms, why limit all the other stuff...it’s pointless. And let’s face it. It’s the teachers at risk.

Lets face it, at this point we are just going to have to go the Swedish route. Hopefully our health system is now prepared for the second surge, because it’s coming.

What the Hell are these people thinking?
You can't have schools with kids wearing masks, no way kids can keep them all day if at all.

It' either remote school or school with no masks.

Kids get it, they just don't get very sick. They will bring it home.

What schools still use lockers??

Are lockers not used? I see lockers at every middle school and high school I've been to in the last 15 years. Multiple school districts, etc.
Some are even new builds(last 7 years).

Whats done with all the stuff kids bring and take home, if lockers aren't used?

20 lb backpacks are the norm these days. Seriously. But to answer your original post.. yes.. expect some if not all of those to be implemented.

Especially meals in classrooms in lieu of the cafeteria closing. Also.. don't be surprised if your kids go to school on M-W-F or T-TH.

And maybe a block schedule where they are in classes 90 minutes to limit transitions and all courses run for a semester.

There are suggestions about how to distance in classes too, so the current proposed idea would be to not cram a bunch of kids into a classroom.

Again, this is a first proposal, so things may(will) change.

Yeah. These people obviously haven't been in a school classroom in a long, long time.

Looks to me like certain things would be allowed back in during Phase 3.

If the SEC states aren't to Phase 3 by August, things are getting ugly.

Reminder, to qualify as moving to the next phase:
Downward trajectory of positive tests as apercent of total tests within a 14-day period(flat or increasing volume of tests)

my two teens..... have lockers assigned but don't use them. Blows my 1980s mind. Anyway....

ive heard from a PTA person.... so just rumor and not official..... the initial discussions if things remain the same for fall.... are half the kids go to school 3 day one week, 2 days the next. The other half are on opposite schedule. They've heard nothing about the plan for athletics.

i guess it’s time to invest in a school bus company, since obviously they will need to double or triple the number of busses.

TBD on kids transmitting. A lot of smart people are chasing down the possibility that kids aren't a significant contributor to covid transmission. Do they never transmit? Hell no. But the observations of so few kids actually giving the virus to others is getting a lot of interest. It's speculated that this is due to kids having less ace-2 receptors in their respiratory systems and the virus needs this to exists
in a human. If they got infected, they would have a smaller viral load and not be likely to pass it on. Essentially a viral dead in for most of them. Allergists are thinking folks with respiratory allergies and asthma are at less risk as well for the same reason - less ace-2 receptors present.

Interesting stuff. We still are so early in with data it's impossible to say, but don't be surprised if kids are a big contributor to us achieving herd immunity earlier than many feel it may take. That's a huge chunk of population you could write off as risk of infection AND passing on.

Here is a quick article. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/05/should-schools-reopen-kids-role-pandemic-still-mystery

If no Athletics, all coaches and AD’s that do not teach a full workload of class should either teach a full workload or be furloughed.

Btw OP , do you have a link.

I don't have a link as I'm just 17ing my source.

Seriously, right? Our school district and multiple others in our metro have a helluva time hiring enough drivers. If more busses were needed, who drives em all?
If the staggered school schedule happens, then I guess that resolves the potential bus issue.

This is a ********, self-serving attitude. Right up there with hoarders and panic-mongers.

If you want to cut everything that can't be done with social distancing, then let's just purge sports, concerts, restaurants, etc. from existence so at least those people can change careers.

"Furlough them mfers" - rallying cry of idiotic self serving dipshits with no sense of the greater good of the community.

"17 them mfers they ain't getting my tuition check"

Dawgcap's earlier post rings true.

Just imagine a world where the SEC decides to play ball in states that meet the criteria but the state of Alabama can't make it to phase 3.

Of course, I'm sure Bama would claim the title anyway, but just imagine.

I'm not even going to worry about the CDC recommendations for something that is going to happen in August here. I'm and ER doctor and their recommendations have been changed with such regularity at this point. We know nothing until we see what happens in a month after sttae shave opened up. I'm in GA who opened up starting last Monday. FYI I haven't seen a spike to this point and have been working overnight the last 5 nights. No spike in cases or this goes away this summer (as I suspect it will like most coronavirus's) I suspect their recommendations will change, key word is recommended not law. I don't remember SARS returning, my money is on this won't either.

If no Athletics and they want to get a check, they need to be teaching full time and not sitting in the Guidance Counselors office and twirling their whistle.

I'm sure that happens on an individual/specific level in Sebastapol or somewhere. But in a general sense, we shouldn't be getting rid of folks because the CDC said their job isn't essential. It will come back.

Not sure any of that is going to be necessary b/c kids aren't going to stay socially isolated all summer. Even if they don't officially open up child care options for the summer, a lot of people can't work from home and can't afford to pay for forty hours a week of individual child care, so they are going to be in some type of group settings one way or another.

And if you believe viral load makes a difference, it's incredibly stupid to be trying to hold them off until everybody is indoors more to catch it. I'm thinking a lot of outdoor group activities might be great right now. If it doesn't really spread outdoors, then great, we juts got lots of outdoor activities in without much spread. If it does spread, then great, we just got lots of people exposed with smaller viral loads than they would get with 30 people in a classroom.

It will come back, thats correct.
Which is why they would be furloughed and not fired.

I am not suggesting it should happen, I am only pointing out that furlough is what you are pushing for since that doesn't get rid of folks and let's them come back.

I know what a furlough is. I don't want them furloughed. Leeshoudveflanked said furlough in the first post I replied to. Thanks for your incredible insight.

They'd probably buy Southern Miss....

Declare it UA-Hattiesburg, and move the Tide team there for the season. The USM players would disperse to other schools, and 2 USM fans would join the Alabama fanbase. The other 80% of USM fans already wear Bama gear every day.

You’d be welcome to find any number of them to support yourself with whatever amount you feel they need. I’m shocked how often people overlook this simple possibility.

They can't make enough masks to meet the demand of my first grader, at the rate she loses ****. And I can't afford to support that.

The kids and healthy an under 65 shouldn’t be forced to wear masks IMO. Personally I think unless you are going into a hospital or other healthcare facility, then wear masks for the vulnerable there. But like many have mentioned we need to be Sweden sooner than later!

Haha, too true.
The lost and found at elementary schools will be a few dozen masks.
And kids will come home with other kids' masks.

And just how will they pay for it?? It's not possible. More buses and more drivers. Bigger buildings. Guess the govt will pay for it ***

I don't know how it will be paid for, but my guess is taxes since, you know, thats where school budgets come from.

They don't have to lug books around like we did. All the kids have laptops, or in the case of smaller kids, iPads.

I've seen suggestions here that some kids will physically go to school MWF, others TT, and all will have online classes.

The problem is - how do you keep young kids separated? Part of going to school is a social experience as well as learning from books.
