Has anyone seen the CDC's initial proposed guidelines for opening schools?

They don't have to lug books around like we did. All the kids have laptops, or in the case of smaller kids, iPads.

Posters here have mentioned crazy heavy backpacks. I pick up a niece a few times a week who is a sophomore and her backpack is huge with books...and a laptop.

For the younger crowd, it may not be books, but snowgear needs to go somewhere. This may be a regional issue, but its for sure a consideration for planning when it comes to where does all that stuff get stored at school.

I've seen suggestions here that some kids will physically go to school MWF, others TT, and all will have online classes.

The problem is - how do you keep young kids separated? Part of going to school is a social experience as well as learning from books.
Separation will be a challenge, yes.
The biggest issue I can see though is how IEPs are handled. That's federally mandated in person help that can't be in person when distance learning is used.
Along this line of thinking, its why right now only review information should be taught remotely- you can't teach new information when part of the population doesn't have reliable access to the information(internet/wifi) and another part of the population has an IEP that isn't being followed.
The potential education gap caused by these issues not being adequately resolved is extremely concerning.

...and then there is the issue of parents needing to work from home if kids are home 2-3 days a week. A 2nd grader can't be expected to be at home alone for the school day and handle learning, troubleshooting technology issues, snacks/lunch, and time management for lessons.
Hell, many middle schoolers can't handle that on their own.

Wife's a teacher. So far, the potential things that I've heard are being batted around are all pretty pointless and at best would serve to make people FEEL like something is being done. Either open school and run it or continue distance learning for the Fall. Honestly the first step should be trimming back the calendar and giving these kids an actual 3 month summer break.

Wow.

If no Athletics, all coaches and AD’s that do not teach a full workload of class should either teach a full workload or be furloughed.

Wow. Nice reward for dedicating 26 years to the profession. Glad I have my years in so the state PERS can pay me (I'm sure you would have them shut that down too).

The amount of time one has spent at a job doesn't mean their job is vital/necessary/essential.
I've been at my job for 16 years, but if it happened to be in an industry that isn't essential and my company had to furlough people, me shaking my fist and citing my tenure would just look pathetic.

I'm guessing you haven't heard that furloughed teachers and administrative staff was and still is discussed at length locally(my state) and nationally.
A janitor who has worked in a school for 20 years and can't clean the school because its closed could be furloughed.
The janitor then requests financial assistance.

It sucks, but its what has been happening around the economy for weeks now. Are you really not aware of this process?

I'm of the opposite opinion. I think they should start back sooner with the expectation that they may need a break in the early winter if Wuhan comes back stronger then. I'd hope we'd have them in group settings all summer so that they are not spreading it when we get to more ideal conditions for spread.

Sorry, changed horses from specific to general. In general, we have too much formalized gotta be somewhere time, and having some time off to just be a kid is important. Hence my return to actual 3 month summer statement. Plenty of learning can be accomplished in a lot less time.
