The manager for Kroger told me that their meat delivery was going to be 65% of normal. That was before President Trump sign his executive order.

It’s going to be a shortage to the extent that 3 large plants shut down which controlled about 10% of all production. It’s not going to be that there is no meat but posts like this will create the shortage because people will hoard again instead of rationally buying so there is enough for all.

Again, all of your hoarders can go to hell! Just buy what you need for a few weeks and leave the rest for others. Be nice.

There's only like 4 companies handling all the beef processing. The government should've fixed that **** years ago. It's effectively a monopoly that costs farmers and consumers a lot of money.
The govt did fix it. This is what was planned. There is so much red tape in that industry, only large companies can survive. Who’s behind a lot of that red tape? Lobbyists for big companies. (Yes some was needed due to past industry failures).
I agree with what you’re saying though. We need a different supply chain. Live beef is going for dirt cheap and it’s at all time highs in the grocery store. That shouldn’t be happening.

When a company with a $28B market cap tells you they don’t expect to get ground beef for 2 weeks, that ain’t got a 17ing thing to do with hoarding. If you think beef production is only down 10% and one of the bigger buyers in the country can’t get any, you’re insane.

You’re gonna need more than a processor to turn venison into beef.

This is from Wendy’s in Madison tonight. I just want to say 17 Wendy’s for putting something up like this. It’s not a supply chain issue. It’s hoarders. Now since they put this sign up hoarders are going to buy all the frosties and banconators. All because of companies like this causing panic**

No double stack for awhile. They are rationing everything down to single hamburgers or cheeseburgers.

i struck out on my quest to find ground beef today, including 2 independent butcher places that had a cooler full of packaged ground beef that was all spoken for.

What a disaster.

Post aren’t the reason for anything. It’s a broken supply chain due to a global pandemic. Also, the last 6 weeks I’ve gotten thousands of pounds of meat to folks who couldn’t get it at no profit to myself. I’ll continue to do that going forward if I can use my connections to find and acquire an order. A heads-up to MSU folks is just that. Lastly, you’re an idiot go 17 yourself.
People like you are just despicable. It looks to me like you are just trying to drum up business for yourself.

Where's the beef? Burger parts in short supply

<time content="2020-05-01T16:20:28Z" itemprop="datePublished">May 1, 2020 12:20 PM ET</time>|About: The Wendy's Company (WEN)|By: Jason Aycock, SA News Editor <svg height="10" viewBox="4.699999809265137 8.300000190734863 22.599998474121094 15.40000057220459" width="16"></svg>
Prices for the parts of beef used in fresh hamburgers have jumped amid short ground beef supply, a development that's hitting some fast-food chains hard, Restaurant Business notes.
That effect is landing hard on Wendy's (WEN -3.7%), which emphasizes fresh-beef burgers. “As you’ve likely read, there have been challenges among protein suppliers across North America," the company says. "We are working closely with our supplier partners and restaurant teams to minimize the impact to our customers and continue to monitor this closely.”
Decreased restaurant demand has meant plentiful product in some areas, but beef particulars make a difference here: Many fast food chains buy both 50% beef trim and 90% lean, for better quality control, but a decline in output combined with high demand from still-operating chains and groceries has pushed 50% trim to $1.93/pound this week (a three-year high), up from $0.25/pound on April 1.
McDonald's (MCD -2.4%) says there's been "no break in supply," and Burger King owner Restaurant Brands International (QSR -2.7%) says it sees the protein-supply challenge but doesn't have current issues.

This is the stupidest thing ever. Makes zero sense. We've been "clipped" on buying meat at the grocery store. 2 packages. Mind you, they put one steak in a package...so, if you have more than 2 people eating or want to buy dor more than one meal (not saying 45 meals), you're stuck. Meat "producers" are proclaiming that they have to kill off stock because the demand is gone. How the 17 is that even legit?

What is the goal of this stupid fiasco again?

There probably are very few that can turn deer meat into beef. **

Makes a person wonder what "parts of beef" they're using in their ground beef. Eyes, hooves??

They’re not killing stock because of lack of demand. It’s because the processing plants are closing due to workers getting sick. Demand is still there.

The butcher I use said last night he’s facing a shortage and his suppliers are raising his prices. Which is being passed down to the customer.

Your butcher is right. Ground beef almost doubled in price before the awful news I got the other day. Be careful though, if you don’t say it’s because hoarders people in this thread will call you despicable. I got drug in this thread for passing along info that will bury me if it doesn’t get sorted out quickly. Every friend I had that I texted this news thanked me for the heads up but some crazies on this board say I’m a horrible human who is the cause for all this. Godspeed and god bless.

It’s what happens when the supply chain get bottlenecked in the middle. The processing plants are down or limited so that starts a pileup of livestock ready for market and processing. Chickens and hogs are very time sensitive. Once it’s time for them to be taken from the farm to the processors it’s done very quickly because the quality starts going downhill quick. Hogs get too fat. After a while if there’s no buyer then the farmer will just have to euthanize them because he has no buyer and he’s spending more and more money to feed and house huge hogs that have poor quality meat. It’s a lose lose situation.

Seems like the chicken processors could just sell whole chickens instead of all the individual packaged drumsticks, thighs, breasts, ect. if they are short on labor. Everybody owns a knife. I got nothing for the hog processors. I wouldn't know where to start with a whole hog and a knife.

If you have no one working in a plant, it doesn’t matter how you cut them up.

All 12 of Sanderson Farms processing plants aren't shut down. If they have a covid problem at one they shut it down for a while. Let the ones that are open process the chickens in a more efficient manner to "meat" demand.

If you buy a meat grinder and cut the deer meat up and mix in some bacon ends and pieces it is delicious. Some stores sell 3 pound boxes of bacon end pieces and add about 7 pounds of deer meat. Better than beef if ya don't mind a little work.

New USA Today article explaining its a supply chain bottleneck and hoarding isn’t an issue with meat. So I guess my post on SPS giving y’all a heads up is still the problem... Reading back through this thread is comical with all the folks who have no idea what’s going on. Won’t hold my breath for any mea culpas. Godspeed Bulldogs

https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/3067983001

“What the plant closures create is somewhat of an hourglass effect with plenty of supply in the bottom part and plenty of demand in the top part with the reduced processing capacity creating a bottleneck,”

Could meat hoarding start?

Experts believe meat won’t likely follow the path of toilet paper, with totally empty shelves and consumers clamoring to find it.

Another challenge with hoarding meat compared to toilet paper: Where do you store it all?
"People’s ability to hoard is more limited with meat because it has to be refrigerated,"

In a statement obtained by USA TODAY, grocery giant Kroger said it has instituted purchase limits on ground beef and fresh pork.
