It was called “Spanish Flu” for the same reasons people want to call this one the “Wuhan Flu”. The 1918 pandemic started in Kansas, not Spain. Our government tried to sweep it under the rug, similar to now, and use propaganda techniques to place the blame of our failures on someone else. That’s how you got “Spanish Flu” and why conservative conspiracy theorists are pushing “Wuhan Flu” now.

Also, exactly, what failures are we covering up and blaming others for? Possibly the fact we, as did every other country, know we could be facing a pandemic with the Chinese flu? I guess in your eyes the US is the only country having difficulties dealing with it? Lord knows Europe and the Middle East have it firmly under control **

The folks hell bent on calling it the Chinese virus seem mostly concerned about the name of the damn thing, causing distraction, and not taking the disease seriously. Trolling for conflict in serious times is just dumb and petty.

We were in a war at the time remember? It hit both sides in WWI very hard but neither wanted it to be that public, for obvious reasons. Spain was not in the war and their press had no restrictions on talking about it in the press like the combatants did. It came to be known as the Spanish Flu because of that. it originated here, most likely in Kansas. The first documented outbreak was on an army post there.

It’s not called the Spanish flu because of American blame or propaganda. As WWI was underway in 1918, most countries involved had their media somewhat censored and WWI was the top headline and all that was really talked about. Well Spain was neutral in WWI, and once the virus traveled to Spain from France, they weren’t under the wartime censorship nor were they losing 1000’s of young men in the war so the Spanish media was free to report what was really going on.
Spain got extra attention after their King Alfonso XIII contracted it then kinda became the poster child for it. But it’s called the Spanish flu because they were really the only country doing actual reporting on it and as the war ended and the research done by the Spanish media made its way to other countries it was cited as The Spanish flu, not because we wanted to shift blame.

I admit I don't know the origins of the name "Spanish flu". Was it coined and pushed to deflect blame by Woodrow Wilson because he did a terrible job at the beginning of the outbreak?

We know it came from a market. We don't know if it was bats or pangolins (which carry a virus with very similar genetic sequences) or some other host. It's not known if it was consumption, contact with blood in a place where animals are butchered, or just through the air as we spread it. We just know there was some passage of this from animals to humans in that market. To say anything else is just spreading misinformation.
You are just echoing misinformation intended to target Chinese people's eating habits as the blame for this instead of focusing on how we can stop it. The Spanish Flu, H1N1, both started here. These pathogens mutate and transfer around the world regardless of borders. They don't care if you are Chinese, American, Italian, or Australian. They just want to invade your body, replicate, and survive in the next host as quickly as possible.
Sure, China 17ed up and didn't get a handle on this as quickly as possible, but it's not like the rest of the world has done much better. South Korea and Japan got ahead of the worst of it. A couple of weeks ago our leadership was telling us it was under control and would just wash out of here as quickly as it came. We need to come together and fight the reality of our situation today rather than worrying about placing blame on others.
The Thailand officials...told the damn WHO....about this crap coming out of China...in Nov or Dec. They told them it was being transmitted between people but...the WHO investigated and said...no...it was ONLY animal to people..! The WHO nor China even recognize Thailand as a country. The WHO covered up for China once again. They should be DISMANTLED over this because...they could’ve kept this crap in China for the most part...if travel would’ve been halted in Dec.

This is all true. None of the combatants wanted to appear as weak or weakened by the virus, so there was no addressing it by the government. Only Spain wasn't involved in the war, had a terrible outbreak, and "hey look over there, Spanish Flu". It's the same thing that's going on here. "Hey we have this under control... this will come in and go quickly... China has a lot of problems and started this China Flu"
It's not even a flu strain. Why is everyone so wrapped up in making up a name that is both trying to place blame and associating it with a disease that it isn't'? No matter where it started, it's our problem now and we need to be focusing on the reality of the situation.
Context and intent matter. If you call it the Chinese Flu and don't mean anything by it, fine. Most people calling it that, however, are intentionally trying to #triggerthelibs, because I guess that's all they have left. Trump is very good at playing people (on both sides) like a fiddle to get the reaction he wants.
I don’t recall him calling it the Chinese Flu until after China’s propaganda team tried to say the US military had planted it there. I’m normally not big on the useless name calling but in this case the media has done little to nothing to stand up for the country so in this case I have no problem. If China doesn’t like it then next time a possible contagion originates in their country they can TELL THE 17’ TRUTH from the start. The libs he’s trying to trigger are the ones toting China’s water.
Nobody is trying to tote China's water. The media that's taken offense to calling it Chinese Flu are doing so to attempt to protect Chinese-Americans that live here from other racist bigots intentionally making their lives more difficult in America because of a virus that started thousand of miles away. They aren't trying to get Trump to stop calling it the Chinese Flu so it'll stop making Chinese people in China lives more difficult.
