Every fan has their limits at which point they want to see their coach fired. For me, I wanted Moorhead fired after the Auburn game. I am trying to be reasonable, but I would be perfectly fine if Cohen fired Howland tomorrow morning.

Something happened at UCLA with Howland, and it killed his effectiveness as a coach. We ended up with what turned out to be a dud at this point in his career.

Hate to tell you but you can’t do better than howland.

Exactly. I hate to hear that and I know other fans do too but the post stans fiasco shows we can suck much worse. My thoughts are Howland will leave on his own before too much longer, which will be a win for all parties. We will look crazy if we fire howland. We are respectable now. Compare that to what he took over.

I'm afraid you're right, this just isn't an attractive job. It's not like in football where you can say "but SEC", SEC means nothing in basketball. It's PART of the reason we ended up with Ray, all of our top targets turned us down flat and Strickland got cute.

I agree but we need a coach working the game at the present levels. We don’t adapt. We coach it like it’s 15 years ago.
You can’t win consistently the way Howland is coaching.

Reasonable MSU basketball goals should be at NIT contention most years and making the tournament every 3-4 years with hopefully a few consecutive years thrown in. I know people will **** all over this but it’s reality.

At one point state was a top SEC program. We could have either kept Stans or hired a decent up an coming coach. We are still paying the consequences s 8 years later. The day we hired RR was one of the worst days for MSU sports in modern times. Only the Croom hire can match it. Sucks really bad.

Then shut the basketball program the 17 down and give it to the other sports.

This is such a losers mentality, yet you probably ***** about the team “giving up.” If the players were as mentally weak as post like this, we would lose every single game. Glad they don’t have the same attitude as you.

Make the tourney every 3-4 years? You're kidding right? If we can't make the NCAA tourney with the talent we have on this team then we will be lucky to make the tourney once every 7-8 years. Last year will probably be it for a while and we lost to freakin' Liberty with that team. I agree we probably can't do any better than Howland at this point because at least he recruits some (though he has been very lucky we've had a bunch of legacies available during his tenure) so I'm willing to let him ride his time out, but there are a lot better basketball coaches out there at this stage. At this point, I don't really care much one way or the other what we do because nothing seems to work. I do agree that overall we would likely have been better off leaving Stans alone and letting him try to right the ship.

I'm not saying it's reasonable to fire him, or even that I'm being reasonable, just saying at this point, I wouldn't have a problem with his firing.

What if his firing led to another Rick Ray or Moorhead type hire where it’s a complete fail. Then we may set the program into a really dark place, and we will be longing for the Howland days. Unless Cohen has a legit candidate up his sleeve, I think it’s just best to keep him.

Do we hire Stans back? It seems like in the later years he had some of the same problems that Howland currently has.

...and we are in luck as most of these "better coaches" are available right now as they tend to spend far too much time posting here.

Bs....bringing stans back would be better than this

Even if we only hit NIT this year, we are back to where Stans had us before the wheels fell off in the last 3-4 years. That may not be good enough for some, but that’s as good as we’ve ever had it in the past 60 years outside of two seasons in the mid-90’s.

I have always tried to support Howland but I don't see enough for us to keep him

We need some new, energetic blood, that plays a more exciting brand of ball, changes defenses, and knows how to attack a zone.

I pretty much agree. My thing is - unlike football - I just don't have the foggiest idea who the up and coming coaching minds are. Not even a little. I'd like to see a good list, though.

We don't have that much talent. What about these players screams talented to you? Outside of Reggie Perry, we are pretty limited.

We were a top tier SEC team. That didn’t translate to making the tournament or tournament success when we did.

You just roll with Howland. I see no benefit in firing him.

I don't see any benefit in keeping him either based on what's returning and what's coming in. I'll say this if he doesn't make significant changes to How he recruits and the system he runs then he'll never make another tournament here again.

I was about to post something similar. I don’t disagree with those saying that we’re not going to be better than Howland in terms of recruiting and on the court results.

That said, I think it’s pretty clear to all that these last two seasons represent Howland’s ceiling for all intents and purposes, and he’s not at the point in his career where he’s going to make big changes in an attempt to get better. Therefore, even if general results might be similar, I do wonder if we wouldn’t benefit from finding a younger and hungrier guy that has a chance to adapt.

Mess up the hire, and I get it... we could end up with worse, but we’re seeing what we’re gonna get with Howland, and the trajectory isn’t positive. Still a lot of variables out there regarding next year, but I fully expect next year to be Howland’s undoing

In 5 years, he has 1 tournament appearance and 0 wins (that won't change this year). We fired Rick Stansbury for better results.

Rick has one tournament appearance in his 1st 5 seasons. 1 win. His last 5 2 tournament appearances 1 win. Rick’s decline started way before Renardo. That was just the culmination and it was time.

Lol!! Wut??

Hate to tell you "can't do better than Jackie Sherrill".
Hate to tell you "can't do better than Joe Moorhead". (No good HC would EVER take the job after we fired a winning coach after 2 years!!)
Hate to tell you "can't do better than Ron Polk".
Hate to tell you "can't do better than John Cohen".
Hate to tell you "can't do better than Sharon Fanning".

Did I cover them all?

There is obviously no way we can ever do better than Howland....**

That's always a risk. But I think it's pretty clear that Howland has taken us as far as he's ever going to. This year is a step back from last year and next year will be another step back. If we're happy with under-performing NIT teams, then yes, by all means keep him.

Yeah, it was time to hire Rick Ray. We would see *** beatings like last night, every single SEC game under him. With Stans we were at least on the bubble most years and we had decent home game attendance. Just a fantastic decision that clown Stricklin made to kill our program.

I think what you’re missing with this post is all but one of them walked away on their own. And I don’t think basketball is a good comparison for baseball and football. In baseball, we could fire Lemonis right now and still land a top notch coach, because we are a top tier program. In football, we offer an extremely good salary.

Did I say we needed to hire Rick Ray? No. I said it was time for Stans to go. I can’t help that Strick completely 17d up the hire. If not for Dan bailing him out then he would’ve fumbled the FL football hire as well.

Total BS! I can name $2.5-$3MM reason why we can get a coach who will run offensive plays, who will know how to break a full court press and know how to break a damn 1-3-1 zone....when we have 3 NBA players on the floor at same time....!
