Any of y’all been following this story? I’m not at all comparing this to the Ebola outbreak, but at least that was mostly contained bc of the area of the world of which it came. But there have been several cases of Coronavirus confirmed in Beijing, and that’s a whole other animal. Even scarier is how trustworthy the reports out of China are with state controlled news outlet. Hopefully the breakout isnt more widespread than they are currently reporting.

It’s related to the SARS outbreak in Asia from around 2003. I’d read where the mortality rate for those over 50 is close to 50%.

Overpopulation is a problem that will need to be (further)addressed in the coming decade, yes.

But this **** is more indicative of poor food and health safety regulations.
It started is a seafood market in Wuhan that also sold live poultry, bats, and marmots.

Nothing about chinese fish and animal markets would make me want to eat food from there, based on pictures, video, and first hand accounts of food safety standards.
It's ahose places are an old school laboratory where bacterias mix and new **** rises up to 17 with humanity.

What kind of world do we live in where a man can’t buy fresh marmot for his family without having to worry about killing half the population?

What’s next, no more nutria?

I’m telling you this ain’t right.

Since China is one of our main food importers, we should be very concerned. Especially with the lack of regulations going on these days.

Trying not to turn this political, but the FDA/USDA/EPA/NIH are all working at a level below of which they were intended. Also, given the fact that food is being sent to China for processing (chicken being the latest), one would be best served to stay away from all China facility related/processed foods. Yet, our version of FDA has decided to NOT post the fact that our meats are going to China to be processed before being sold at our local grocery stores.
Best strategy, locally owned/processed foods and avoid meat.

No wonder I see so many chicken trucks lately. It's a long haul to China for processing. When they shut all these processing plants down its gonna put a lot of Guatemalans out of work

We use Somalians up here in Ten’see. That brings it all full circle since they also like to be pirates like our new coach.

So you’re telling me that we’re sending an already cheap meat across the world to get processed and then they’re bringing it BACK across the world to sell us at the same price? Am I missing something? None of that sounds feasible nor cost effective.

It's not just chicken and, no, it makes zero sense

Regulations! We don't need no stinking regulations! The market will take care of us.

Get out of here with your I-hate-America-liberal-commie-protect-the-idiot-consumer regulations, K-Dawg13!

Oh, you're being political.

Cheap chinese fingers keep the prices down! Who the hell can afford $50 for a pound of meat processed here by Americans?

And just where to you recommend we get locally owned processed foods?

Avoid meat?!?! You must hate America and GOD!

Go to the Night Market and drink the snake blood. Builds up your immune system.

Eat the snake heart and munch on some tiger testicles and you'll damn near be bullet proof! Just saying.

It's not feasible and not true. Yes, we do allow China to export processed cooked chicken products to us, but the original poultry has to come from the US, Chile, or Canada I believe. But no, you aren't buying raw chicken breast that was grown in the US and then got processed in China. That's just dumb. We did make a deal, or are in the process of it, of allowing Chinese grown and processed chicken to be imported. Part of that is they are dropping their restrictions on the import of US raised chickens that stemmed from the 2015 avian flu outbreak. Tyson and some others own processing plants in China already, and that's all about the wages they can pay over there. However, even that won't mean your raw chicken at Kroger came from China. There might be some raw frozen products that pop up though.

ETA: We got pretty lucky during that avian flu outbreak in MS. Other poultry concentrated regions weren't as lucky. If a farm tested positive for it then every bird that was being grown for something like a 50 mile radius was incinerated and those farms had to test flu free for some amount of time before they got another batch.

Yall, don't waste too much time into responding to an idiot who posts novel excerpts and stupid memes as actual policy.

As for a place that was crushed by it...in the spring of '15, Iowa lost 30 million hens and 1.5 million turkeys due to the avian flu. 8500 jobs were also eliminated/lost.
In addition to the horrific number of animals lost, there was close to half a billion in lost wages and $150million in lost taxes. The total economic loss was well over 1 billion. It was completely crazy to watch what was happening all around here.

I figure our version of the FDA hasn't said anything about that because it's complete ********. That would be one of the most impractical ways of processing anything that I have ever seen, if not THE most impractical way. It's incredible what people will believe these days.
