Another reason why the 4-game redshirt rule is ********.

At least make it only for 1st year freshmen. Houston's starting QB is probably going to sit out the rest of the season so he can transfer and have a year of eligibility left next year.

I absolutely love the 4 game redshirt. Seems to help us way more than big schools.

Well when you look at it, this guy is on his 3rd head coach in 4 years. Should players really be held hostage through all that chaos when he has no control? They made two **** hires in a row at Houston, and he wants to play for a winner for his final season. I don’t blame him one bit.

Probably some jealousy seeing his high school back up having success at an SEC school.

That opinion is beyond terrible. I see no downside at all to this rule, it helps players. I don't necessarily support players being paid, but I definitely they need more flexibility, especially when coaches make millions, lie to them and change schools all the time.

Insane that you feel that way.

This... I've got no problem with King making a decision for himself. You only get 4 seasons of playing time in college football. Utilize those 4 years to the maximum of whatever you want in life.

I believe we need to add another classification to our University system. We should have Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and Carpetbaggers.

I agree with your premise, but GS looks like a guy who is only going to be on campus for 3 years under any circumstances. He has the NFL measurables now and will improve enough to look very attractive in the 2022 draft as a JR or redshirt sophomore. Might as well let him play as much as possible.

That doesn't matter. No way he's here 5 years.

Why not? People had the same ridiculous comments about KT. Fresh off of Dak getting drafted, people were convinced he was next and would be in the NFL in 3 or 4 years. Now he’s running 3rd string.

How many coaches break their contract in the middle of the season? I've got no problem with a kid transferring before the season starts. But letting a starting QB play 4 games and then quit the team is ********.

Petrino and Saban both did in the NFL. Technically any college coach that leaves between the end of the regular season and the team’s bowl game is doing the same thing, and that happens at least a half dozen times per year. Mullen did it to us.

Man some of yall need to seriously pump the brakes. Shrader is a nice player, but he is a long way from having NFL measurables right now. He threw a 5 yard out last Saturday that I swear took 4 seconds to get to the receiver. Not a lot of arm strength demonstrated yet, and he has some mechanical issues that might be playing into that. He may get there one day, but its flat out silly to make him into the next Dak already. Only about 2-3% of FBS QB’s ever get drafted, and about half of those don’t even pan out.

Like I said earlier, people were saying the same things about KT 3 years ago...saying there was no point in redshirting him, Mullen would make him even better than Dak, etc. And now he’s 3rd string and likely transfer to a G5 or FCS school next season because he’s in no man’s land in terms of the depth chart and his remaining eligibility. Had he actually redshirted either of the past 2 years, he would be a Sophomore this year with a great chance of being a 2-year starter in 2020 and 2021, or at worst case a back-up who could be brought in for certain packages.

Yeah. He's got great awareness and knowledge of the game for a true FR and he's clearly a great leader, but arm strength is a major weakness from what I saw.

For the 5 who downvoted, what would your opinion have been if Dak had quit the team 4 games into the 2015 season so he could transfer to Alabama? Or even if Fitzgerald had done it 4 games into last season?

Well technically neither could have done it because they both already redshirted. But if either one was on a team that was 1-3 while on their third head coach, I wouldn’t blame them one bit. And for that to be the case, our program would have been the equivalent of a past and present dumpster fire which would mean many of the great moments that they actually both had to cement their legacies would have never happened. And I think our fans would be so despondent at that point that probably no one would care.

The rule is great, but this situation is ******. He's turning his back on his team for this season whether he transfers or not. Unless he's hurt, which it doesn't make any mention of him being injured, it's a selfish decision. The article says another WR is doing the same thing. wtf?

Spurrier is the only coach I can remember that seemed to hang it up on his own mid-way through a season but there might be others. There have obviously been many times when a school gave up on a coach during a season. And there are countless number of instances where a coach gave up on a player during a season. In Kelly Bryant’s case, it led to him taking advantage of the four game redshirt rule.

I like the rule because it benefits the players. You’ll have some isolated cases where a guy bails out early, but you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Of course technically Dak couldn’t. That’s not the point. What if Kylin Hill announces tomorrow that he’s redshirting & transferring to Texas A&M since we didn’t start 4-0?

You tell him good luck.

Of course, he's not going to do that because he's not stupid. His easiest path to the NFL is to play the rest of this season here. Just like that Houston QB. I can't even start to entertain the stupidity of his decision. My guess is Lincoln Riley is in his ear.

Even still, the players should have the freedom to be stupid if they so choose.

Yeah, I realize that’s not the point, hence the whole rest of my original post. But I don’t think any of your scenarios are realistic at all. Yeah, Kylin leaving now would suck for us. But it would suck way worse for him....he’d have to wait two years longer to get to the NFL, where he will most assuredly be in 2020 without question at this point.

Likewise, if Dak left after 4 games in 2015, it would have sucked. But on the flip side, it would be awesome if Tua transferred from Bama to MSU for next season and sat the rest of the year for Bama. The chances of either of those things happening is / was 0% though, so its pointless to even discuss.. Overall, if you have a good program that wins at a decent level annually and doesn’t have a lot of continuous upheaval in your coaching staff, guys are going to stick around. If you don’t, losing or not losing one or two guys for 8 games isn’t going to make a damn bit of difference....you are still going to struggle as a program. And if coaches can dip out between season’s end and bowl games (or be fired midseason), then players should not be held to a higher standard.

The coach has to give the player redshirt status correct? A player can ask but it's not automatic from my understanding. From what I heard on the radio this morning the QB along with a WR are both going to redshirt and remain at Houston next season. With the 1st year Head Coach it makes sense as they are starting out 1-3.

Is that the way the rule works?

I would be amazed if the rule even allows what OP is suggesting. Can a student-athlete quit after four games and declare a redshirt season for himself? BTW that is not what the article says is happening in this case. Both players say this was discussed with family and the head coach and everybody agreed it would be in the players' best interest to red-shirt this year and play their final year at Houston next season. The only mention of transfer in the article is that the QB's father said he would be transferring. If they transfer out after this season, would/should the rules allow Houston to retroactively revoke the redshirt?

I do agree that players should have the same ability to break their scholly (contract) like coaches do, but I still would feel shatty if one of ours left and won a natty with another program.

The school doesn't have anything to do with redshirts - that's eligibility granted by the NCAA. You have 5 years to play 4. That clock continues whether you redshirt at your original school, quit and sit out a year, transfer, whatever. The new rule is just that you can play up to 4 games without that counting as one of your 4 years to play. Doesn't matter why you sit out - injury, quit the team, or the coach just doesn't let you play. The NCAA is only concerned with how many games you played.

But this is a strange situation... certainly if I was a senior on that team, I'd hate those guys for giving up on this season regardless of whether they stay at Houston or transfer. And I'd hate the coach of even allowing it to happen.
