Auburn's atmosphere changed because Bruce Pearl had the fans buy in. Ole Miss' atmosphere changed because Kermit had the fans buy in. I can go down the list of different coaches who did that and it's the same result. They didn't change because of where they were sitting. Va Tech's students sit in the same place as ours and Buzz had them bought in. They would've sat on the roof if he told them it made a difference. This is the only gripe I have with Howland, cause he think he's a great coach and a great recruiter. He just doesn't know how to engage with students and the common fans in general and it's because he's never had to. When he was at Pitt, it was a big game every night they played, and you don't have to worry about those things at UCLA. I think Howland is great with your big money people, but where he lacks is with the every day fan and students and that's never been his thing either. He's from Southern California, it's just different. It's the main reason why people gravitate towards the women's program, it's not the players because they come and go. It's Schaefer and the way he's able to relate to our fan base. Coaching in the South is just different and every coach across any sport has figured it out. Whether it was Mullen, Calipari, Jimmy V, Stansbury, Dabo, Bertman, Saban, Cohen, Polk, and you could go on and on in any sport. They were able to figure it out and tap into that. It's the old adage I go back to that I heard Dan say after we beat A&M in '14. "It's not win first and the fans show up, fans show up and start believing in the program and the wins happen." Coaching in the South is as much about relationships as it is about Wins and Losses. That's what Ben has to figure out and that's what he has to tap into. When he does that, the atmosphere will be back.
